Susanna Halonen, better known as the Happyologist, is a coach, trainer and speaker who helps individuals, teams and organisations to find their best performance through happiness. She is a positive psychology practitioner whose work is based on the science of happiness and performance. Her research has focused on passion at work and in life, and she has personally taken many passion journeys herself while juggling a career alongside her love for horses. She was one of the top graduates in her Master's of Science in Applied Positive Psychology class, and she was the first to research passion using qualitative research methods. With a background in a corporate career, she has first-hand experience of how different organisations function and the important role passion plays in them. Great read - especially those of us ready to take action!

Any book on positivity and passion that starts with "Screw" is my cup of tea. At times, books in this realm can come off so fluffy that it becomes challenging to take them to heart and bring them to life. Certainly not the case here. Susanna does an excellent job of sharing information and theories while also sharing the tools (and examples) to make those changes in your own life or even to inspire change in the lives of those around you. I look forward to implementing many suggestions she provided and reading anything else she puts out there!

Good book, could have been more concise

It's an interesting read about taking the initiative to bring out your innate passion by exploring five key elements. While very interested in the topic, I found my mind wondering over some passages. Sometimes I think the writing could have been more concise. I also would have liked the exercises grouped together at the end of the book so I don't have to go searching for them after having finished the book. But I still recommend the book!

New ideas in a solid opening

Like Mr. Rudel's previous books, the KoltanowskioPhoenix attack, is very comprehensive. After playing the Colle system for many years I had moved to other openings When D. RUdel came out with Zuke Em. THis book brought new life to the opening for me. I must say the same about the K-P. For me it was helpful to be somewhat familiar with the Colle system prior to opening the Colle K=P. Although for others that may not be necessary. THe Phoenix Attack brings lively play and good chances to the White side play, and covers many side lines. As always Mr. Rudel's lively style makes for an enjoyable and informative book. I do not think The Colle K-P can be refferred to as 'THe Buisnessmans' opening for too much longer as David has brought a fresh perspective and a solid attacking approach to this opening. I would reccomend this book along with the two previous Colle-Zuckertort books for a solid easy to understand system

About the Author

JEREMY M. BERG received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Chemistry from Stanford (where he did research with Keith Hodgson and Lubert Stryer) and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Harvard with Richard Holm. He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Carl Pabo in Biophysics at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Johns Hopkins from 1986 to 1990. He then moved to Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as Professor and Director of the Department of Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry, where he remained until 2003. He then became Director of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences at the National Institutes of Health. In 2011, he moved to the University of Pittsburgh where he is now Professor of Computational and Systems Biology and Pittsburgh Foundation Chair and Director of the Institute for Personalized Medicine. He served as President of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from 2011-2013. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. He received the American Chemical Society Award in Pure Chemistry (1994) and the Eli Lilly Award for Fundamental Research in Biological Chemistry (1995), was named Maryland Outstanding Young Scientist of the Year (1995), received the Harrison Howe Award (1997), and received public service awards from the Biophysical Society, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the American Chemical Society, and the American Society for Cell Biology. He also received numerous teaching awards, including the W. Barry Wood Teaching Award (selected by medical students), the Graduate Student Teaching Award, and the Professor’s Teaching Award for the Preclinical Sciences. He is coauthor, with Stephen J. Lippard, of the textbook Principles of Bioinorganic Chemistry.

Systems. Professor Tymoczko received his B.A. from the University in Chicago in 1970 and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Chicago with
Shutsung Liao at the Ben May Institute for Cancer Research in 1973. He then held a postdoctoral position with Hewson Swift of the Department of Biology at
the University of Chicago. The focus of his research has been on steroid receptors, ribonucleoprotein particles, and proteolytic processing enzymes. Gregory J. Gatto, Jr., received his A.B. degree in chemistry from Princeton University, where he worked with Martin F. Semmelhack and was awarded the Everett S. Wallis Prize in Organic Chemistry. In 2003, he received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he studied the structural biology of peroxisomal targeting signal recognition with Jeremy M. Berg and received the Michael A. Shanoff Young Investigator Research Award. He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in 2006 with Christopher T. Walsh at Harvard Medical School, where he studied the biosynthesis of the macrolide immunosuppressants. He is currently a Senior Scientific Investigator in the Heart Failure Discovery Performance Unit at GlaxoSmithKline. Lubert Stryer is Winzer Professor of Cell Biology, Emeritus, in the School of Medicine and Professor of Neurobiology, Emeritus, at Stanford University,
where he has been on the faculty since 1976. He received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School. Professor Stryer has received many awards for his research on the
interplay of light and life, including the Eli Lilly Award for Fundamental Research in Biological Chemistry, the Distinguished Inventors Award of the Intellectual
Property Owners’ Association, and election to the National Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. He was awarded the National Medal
of Science in 2006. The publication of his first edition of Biochemistry in 1975 transformed the teaching of biochemistry.

Excellent textbook. Really a 'go to' textbook for anyone interested in Biochemistry.
Only concern was with the shipping. The book was placed in a box without any wrapping to protect it during shipping. One corner was damaged during transit. Really a minor issue, but for a new, and relatively pricey textbook, I expect 'pristine/perfect' condition.

Worth Reading Twice!

I used to think of this as one of my favorite books so I recommended it to my book club. I still loved it the second time around, but it is a little too fantastical for my current tastes. Nonetheless, Robbins has an incredible way with words - from phenomenal metaphors to startling references to not so subtle humor. The artful language, though, tends to distract a bit from the story.

The problem also with it being my second time around, is that there wasn't that amazement at what happens in the lives of our heroes. Interestingly, though, is that it didn't end the way I remembered. Instead, it ended the way I wanted it to.

Since reading this the first time, I've read pretty much everything Robbins has written. I still put Jitterbug Perfume at the top of all his books.

Wisdom for the ages

This is one of THE great books in the English language.
It is about a love that lasts a thousand years, the search for immortality, of course perfume... and, oh yes, not to be forgotten...beets.

I have, in my search for the ultimate book, my search for the wisdom for the ages, (the perfect taco)searched far and wide; Quantum Physics, philosophy, religion...
I have cast my net wide and thought I had left no stone unturned. Most have left me empty. Who could have guessed I should have been turning over beets? Mr. Robbins has shared with us mere mortals, a work that had me underlining quotes on almost every page, a work in which I can only hope I have allowed it's wisdom into my soul as a fragrance expands to fill ones lungs.

For those less interested in "Literature", Jitterbug Perfume could be considered a "rom com" because the romance oozes from this work like the blood of its favorite vegetable. The humor is thick as the fragrance of its favorite perfume, winking at you like some ancient sojourner with tongue firmly in cheek, yet dispensing such nuggets of wisdom as only time and experience could accumulate.

The language is delicious, it pours from the pages like a thick Louisiana gumbo unconstrained by the levees of an indolent corps of engineers.
My only complaint is that near the end, the story slows...no car chases or epic battles for control of the titular scent which wafts thru the narrative like a carrot before the cart, but perhaps that is a metaphor as well, that encumbered as we are by our instant gratification culture, our religious pedantic political machine, the military industrial complex which governs our economy and excuse for empire, that perhaps instead, we should just all smell the flowers and dance to our life, health, and loves.

May Tom Robbins live a thousand years!

What a fantastic book. Tom Robbins is a brilliant writer, and JITTERBUG PERFUME is his masterwork. It's a book rich with audacious language, glorious detail, expressive whims and fancy, fascinating characters, and takes one a trip through the scientific, the intellectual, and the absurd. At times romantic, confounding, heartfelt, insightful and undoubtedly poetic, Tom Robbins takes the reader to new places and dangerous heights that know no bounds. Unlike many stories told, JITTERBUG PERFUME actually gets better as it moves along...eventually saving the best for last. What's this book about? There's no no easy answer, nor adequate synopsis that justifies the beauty of this book. It is not about "a janitor with a missing bottle," as the back of the book claims. It IS, however, a "saga." That's the one thing the back of the book gets right. Yet what is it really about, you ask? Well...it's about beats. It's about death. It's about life. It's about immortality. It's about scents and smells. It's about our biological makeup and its many mysteries. It's about sex. It's about love. It's about how we choose to live, breathe, bathe and above all else...smell. JITTERBUG PERFUME will make you think. JITTERBUG PERFUME will make you want to live forever. JITTERBUG PERFUME will transform you, and force you (literally) to stop and smell the roses. This is a must-read for anyone who appreciates love, language, scents...and damn good writing.

This book was a pretty fast read. The plot with the mother-in-law was pretty predicable and could have been handled differently or Brett could have been written with more backbone. Having said that, I enjoyed the book and would recommend others read it.

Deceptive Description

The description of this book leads you to believe that it is a real reference book with 1595 pages, imagine my shock when it arrived as a 154 page coffee table book. I will keep it because it only cost 4.00 with shipping but this description needs to be changed completely. The cover of the book is not even the same thing. It does have the correct author and title but that is about it. This description needs changed on the site as it is completely incorrect in everything but what it is about. I am very disappointed as I was trying to get a big cat reference book for my grandson.

About the Author
Joanne Sorte has worked as an early childhood professional for over 35 years. She received a bachelor of arts and master of science degrees in human development and family sciences from Oregon State University (OSU). She began her early childhood professional experiences as a home visitor for the Home Base program in Yakima, Washington, directed a preschool program for Lower Columbia College in Longview, Washington, and worked as the family services coordinator for Head Start. Currently she is a Senior Instructor for the College of Health & Human Sciences at Oregon State University. Joanne is Director of the Oregon State University Child Development Laboratory which presents a blended early education program model where children from low-income families participate through support of the Oregon Head Start Prekindergarten Program, children with special developmental needs, and children from the general community attend preschool together. She directs the practicum experience for students majoring in childhood development, supervises graduate students, and facilitates research on child development and wellness. She is also an active member of the Oregon Head Start Association. She has co-authored an intervention program for preschool settings with Inge Daeschel, called Health in Action: 5 Steps to Good Health, and enjoys assisting early childhood settings to partner with families in improving children’s wellness.

 

Inge Daeschel is a licensed and registered dietitian who is board certified as a specialist in pediatric nutrition. She received her bachelor of science degree in foods and nutrition science at Plattsburgh State University in New York. She completed her dietetic internship at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and received her master of science degree in nutrition science from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. She worked at Duke University Medical Center, first as pediatric dietitian clinician and later as assistant chief clinical dietitian. This position was instrumental in developing her interest in helping families understand the nutritional needs of their children.

 

She and her family relocated to Oregon where she worked at the Corvallis Clinic and later accepted a faculty position as instructor in the department of Human Development and Family Sciences at Oregon State University (OSU) where she is health and nutrition services coordinator of the OSU Child Development Laboratory and the OSU Oregon Head Start Prekindergarten Program. Inge is also a nutrition consultant providing services to an area hospital, a WIC program, and Early Head Start, Head Start, and Migrant Head Start programs. Her expertise in feeding children is based on personal as well as professional experience, gained raising four children, including one with multiple food allergies. She has co-authored with Joanne Sorte an intervention program called Health in Action: 5 Steps to Good Health which promotes wellness by providing focused messages that address nutrition and physical activity in early childhood programs.

 

Carolina Amador, M.D., is a board-certified pediatrician. She received a bachelor of education degree in speech pathology at the University of Georgia in Athens. She earned her medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta and completed her residency in pediatrics at West Virginia University in Morgantown. She worked as chief resident in pediatrics at West Virginia University where she developed a lactation clinic as well as a focus on advocacy for breast-feeding mothers. She has a master’s degree in public health from the University of Washington in Seattle with a focus on maternal and child health. She moved with her husband to Corvallis, Oregon, and has worked as a general pediatrician for 10 years, and is currently employed by a community health center that serves a large percentage of Hispanics and migrant workers. During these years as a general pediatrician, she has developed professional interests in childhood obesity prevention, health disparities, and Latino health. She has been involved in community events and organizations advocating for children’s health including the Oregon State University Head Start Health Advisory Committee, the Benton County Healthy Weight and Lifestyle Coalition, the Benton County Oral Health Coalition, and the Breastfeeding Coalition of Benton County. Throughout her years of education and medical practice, she has participated in several international health experiences in Ecuador, Honduras, Uganda, and Malawi.

In addition to spectacularly bad grammar and usage in the initial chapters of this ...

WARNING!!! THIS EBOOK CAN ONLY BE INSTALLED ON A SINGLE DEVICE!!! I just went to install it on my full-sized iPad, and was told that I had hit some license limit. I'd been reading it on my Mac, but apparently, in addition to the rest of this review, Pearson has apparently completely missed the memo on eBooks. They are intended to be read on multiple devices and keep your notes and highlights synced. Hopefully I can uninstall it from my Mac and then install it on my iPad. However, considering that I wouldn't insult the backside of a parakeet by using this abysmal tome as bird cage liner, I suspect that I may well now be limited to ONLY reading the text on my Mac.

In addition to spectacularly bad grammar and usage in the initial chapters of this book, it is filled with references to "click here for ." This is in the print version. These two problems indicate a singular lack of concern for even the most basic editorial processes. I'd thought that by buying a second electronic copy of this textbook that the "click here" would, at least, bring up information. It does not. The "click here" text and sections in the book do not, obviously, work in the paper version nor do they work in the electronic version.

My instructor has placed links to the Pearson videos that some of the "click here" text refers in a separate online location. Pearson has inadequate bandwidth and I have fairly constant issues with buffering.

The text is very much focused on Americans and the U.S. with constant references to "Nutrition for Americans" etc. A properly written university text would replace "Americans" with "people." I work with a predominately Chinese community, and the information in this text applies equally to all people. It is not specific to "Americans" as the text implies.

Singularly the worst textbook I have seen in all of my 49 years as a teacher and student. Clearly, Pearson is either very close to total collapse, or has a majority of the staff with taking nips at the bottle throughout the work day. If I could give this waste of paper and electrons negative stars, there aren't enough negative stars available.

Amazon's guidelines suggest comparing to similar products, so. Compared to my other e-textbook, published by Worth Publishers, there is no comparison. I have that text installed on my two iPads, My Mac, and my iPhone (just to see if it was usable, it really isn't for me, text too small). The editing is impeccable, there are no non-working links in the text (there are no links at all, duh!), and they have managed to get the most basic of editorial tasks, the ordering and entry of the correct copyright date, correct.

and the information is useful and clear

I'm using this book for a class in paperback form, and the information is useful and clear; however, it is probably a better and more useful text in ebook form because several times a chapter there are sidebars encouraging us to follow links to web sites or to watch videos. The links and videos are highlighted in blue and have web-style features to guide use to follow. Otherwise the book is a thorough overview of nutrition, health and safety for early child care providers.
