A comprehensive overview of an important marketing technique

Serious people who represent some of the world's most respected businesses make very effective use of thought leadership, which is the deliberate creation of ideas to help businesses succeed, according to Laurie Young in this book. It is something which is increasingly influential on buyer behaviour, and the best purveyors of thought leadership are becoming more organised and sophisticated with their programs.

The book outlines a range of attributes of good thought leadership:

* Informative and credible, prompting businesses to learn, investigate and change
* Visionary, shaping an idea and providing "foresight"
* Authentic, rather than empty hype
* Unique, although it can be based on recycled ideas
* Insightful, helping people to see things in new ways or solve new problems
* Communicating values that resonate with the intended audience
* Freely shared

The author claims that very little is written about thought leadership, but a quick search on Amazon reveals more than 30 books with "thought leadership" in their titles, with many more on content marketing, which is a closely related concept. Whilst this is the most comprehensive book on thought leadership that I have read, it fails to arrive at a concise definition, and as a result ends up encompassing things ranging from scientific research to innovative advertising, things which are clearly not, according to common understanding of the term, "thought leadership".

The Dove Real Beauty advertising campaign, for example, was a highly successful case of creating and communicating ideas, but did not in my opinion constitute "thought leadership" because it did not attempt to establish someone as a recognised authority in a specialised field. Thought leadership is normally regarded as a marketing technique for someone who is a provider of expertise such as a professional service firm, not for a company that sells products.

In my opinion, someone who is interested in pursuing a thought leadership strategy will find plenty of interesting material in this book, but would be well advised also to read a good book on content marketing for advice on how to use an integrated social media communication program.

About the Author
David holds a B.S. degree in ocean engineering and a M.S. degree in civil engineering from the Florida Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. degree in civil engineering from the University of Connecticut. He was employed by General Dynamics Corporation Electric Boat Division for five years, where he provided submarine construction support and conducted engineering design and analysis associated with pressure hull and other structures. In addition, he conducted research in the area of noise and vibration transmission reduction in submarines. He then taught at Lafayette College for one year prior to joining the civil engineering faculty at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, where he has been since 1990. David is currently a member of the American Railway Engineering & Maintenance-of-way Association Committee 15 (Steel Structures), and the American Society of Civil Engineers Committee on Blast, Shock, and Vibratory Effects. He has also worked with the Federal Railroad Administration on their bridge inspection training program. Professional interests include bridge engineering, railroad engineering, tall towers, structural forensics, and blast-resistant design. He is a licensed professional engineer in Connecticut and Pennsylvania.

Born in Philadelphia, Russ holds a B.S. degree in civil engineering from the University of Delaware and an Sc.D. degree in the field of structural engineering from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He taught at Lehigh University and Worchester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) before joining the faculty of the University of Connecticut where he held the position of Chairman of the Civil Engineering Department and taught for twenty-six years. In 1991 Russ received the Outstanding Civil Engineer Award from the Connecticut Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Born in France and educated in France and Switzerland, Ferd held an M.S. degree from the Sorbonne and an Sc.D. degree in theoretical mechanics from the University of Geneva. He came to the United States after serving in the French army during the early part of World War II and had taught for four years at Williams College in the Williams-MIT joint arts and engineering program. Following his service at Williams College, Ferd joined the faculty of Lehigh University where he taught for thirty-seven years. He held several positions, including the University Distinguished Professors Chair and Chairman of the Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics Department, and in 1995 Ferd was awarded an honorary Doctor of Engineering degree by Lehigh University.

SI Units only

I bought this for my class and thinking that this was just a cheaper edition of the 10th edition because it is a soft cover. However I soon learned that the 10th edition used for the class and thhis 10th edition are different because this one is all in SI units for the problems and also some of the problems are out of order as compared to the other 10th edition of the book which means when an instructor assigns problems, you have to make sure you are 1. doing the correct problem that the instructor assigns, and 2. that you are using the correct units and numbers.

It's a good book overall

Well this is a good book but be aware that it is a college level book. To me the text was explanatory enough. The lectures are followed by some examples. And be aware engineering problems are not always the same you won't always have a worked out example to follow. The book gives the intuition and tools required to do the problems but you still need to apply the critical thinking to know what to use when. Some of the problems did seem a little too difficult but overall I liked this text. Not too basic not too complex

As others have also said, this book is useless as a teaching text. It might as well just be a list of questions without explanations. The text and examples are very vague and unhelpful, and many of the questions are very difficult or impossible without being presented with a basis to solve them prior to attempt.
Book needs much more explanatory text and examples, and problems at chapter end should have worked out solutions. If, as the professor claims, this is actually the best statics text out there, I'm surprised anybody becomes an engineer.

Chris Groff Chris is Executive Director of Parenting by Design and a co-leader of the Parenting by Design seminars. He has a business degree from TCU, law degree from Baylor, and Masters degree in Christian Education from Dallas Theological Seminary. He and Michelle have been married for more than thirty years and have two grown sons. Michelle Groff, MA, LPC Michelle and her husband Chris are co-founders of Parenting by Design, along with Lee Long. She received her BA from Texas Christian University and her Masters degree in Biblical Counseling from Dallas Theological Seminary. She is a member of the Christian Association for Psychological Studies and the International OCD Foundation. Lee Long, MA, LPCs The co-author and editor of Parenting by Design's parenting curriculum, Lee is a full-time Christian counselor and regular Parenting by Design seminar speaker. Excellent read and well worth your time.

This book is written by people who have lived parenting at its hardest, and they invite you in to hear their story. Are you the Dictator, the Rescuer or the Counselor as a parent? What do you do with your kids "backpack" issues versus their "boulder" issues? Would you rather control or influence your children? Do you truly know how to show empathy? These questions and more are explored in Parenting By Design. As the mother of a young adult, I wish I'd had these tools twenty years ago, but it's never to late to learn!

Very Hands-On Book for Parents!

This is a very practical and biblically based book on parenting. It began when Chris and Michelle Groff found out their teenage son was using drugs and they had to re-examine their parenting style. Two of the authors are biblical counselors and they do an excellent job of sharing examples from their clients and what they have learned in all of their years of working with families. They describe the types of parenting, Rescuer, Dictator and Counselor and explain in great length why the “Counselor” approach is God’s way. For example they share how God handled Adam and Eve when they rebelled in the Garden and how His probing questions made them own up to their wrong choices and the consequences they would face. They also share about the Prodigal son from the Bible and how the father in the story knew that his son would learn best from the consequences of his wrong choices.
They take each stage of a child’s development and explain how to come up with age appropriate consequences and share “Consequence Worksheets” in the appendix. They share how to relate to your kids instead of just demanding rote obedience. I highly recommend this book for any parent and wish I had been able to read it when I was raising my kids!

Because I have enjoyed the Parenting by Design email devotionals, I thought I'd enjoy this book. However, while it was ok, it wasn't what I expected. I thought it'd be more like the email devotionals with more direct tie ins to Scripture. There are some, but mostly this book outlines how to parent from a counseling perspective. Instead of a method based on Scripture, this book reads as a parenting perspective already in place that they found Scriptures to stick in here or there to corroborate. That wasn't what I was looking for. There are plenty of parenting perspectives to choose from. I wanted to dig deeper into what Scripture says about parenting, and this book only superficially does that.

Gadi Kaufman is a Certified Neuromuscular Therapist located in Santa Monica, California. Gadi has over 20 years experience in the practice of manual therapy as a CNMT, CSCS, and CAK. He has a degree in physical education, certification in neuromuscular therapy, applied kinesiology and Strain Counterstrain Technique. His extensive knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the body’s biomechanics has enabled him to create a unique combination of manual techniques which address the body as one functional unit. This book is a gift from heaven and I am so grateful I found it

I have had 3 instances over that last 6 years where i have had debilitating muscle spasms. Each time they have lasted 2-3 months, with most of that time in uncontrollable pain. 1st happened when I was closing a trunk, second I was cutting fruit at the counter and third and just happened was holding a door for someone.

After a week in bed unable to move I decided to look on amazon for other pain releif and in my search saw Gadi's book go by. There were only a few reviews but the premise seemed plausible so I bought it.

Within an hour I did the positions while lying in bed. It is now 4 hours later and it is as if I am almost back to my normal self, no more spasms or pain!!! :)

I cannot believe how lucky I was to find this. I was sure I had another month or two of pain and now I know the secret.

Thank you Gadi, you have no idea how appreciative I am for your work.

This book shows you exactly how to do the technique- Works Great

"Gadi's technique of Strain Counterstrain has really helped me with my back pain. It is a pain free technique and I felt instant relief. The best part is that Gadi teaches you these techniques so you can help yourself at home. They really work. I recommend his book, Relief from Back Pain in 90 Seconds. There are wonderful illustrations and descriptions so you can practice the technique on yourself. Of course it's always better to go in for a session with Gadi. He can relax my entire nervous system in one session. I walk out feeling GREAT!!!"
Chiropracters made my back pain worse and created more problems. This gentle and effective technique gets to the source of the problem, MUSCLE SPASMS. Only Gadi's method can release muscle spasms and relax the nervous system.

I have also had therapy with Gadi and have been practicing at home the release techniques outlined in the book.
They are relieving the myofascial pain syndrome in my back and shoulders. Seeing Gadi and doing the exercises
in this book is my last resort after having tried chiropractic care, trigger point shots, shiatsu massage, physical therapy,
and accupunture. I am beginning to sleep better due to my muscles learning how to relax and experiencing a lessening of high
night time cortisol levels. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a proven method of pain relief
for tight spastic muscles.

Another great Toyota book from Liker

Toyota Culture is the 5th book in "the Liker Toyota series". After Toyota Way, Toyota Way Fieldbook, Toyota Product Development and Toyota Talent, you would expect that there is less news to write about Toyota. Well, not true. Toyota Talent is the thickest book in the series with it's almost 600 pages of Toyota info.

Toyota Culture mainly covers HR practices and related policies. It describes this as "the people value stream". How does Toyota hire and train people (the detailed training processes are described in Toyota Talent). How do they grow inside the company. How does Toyota work with the local communities.

The book is separated in five parts:
- What is Toyota Culture?
- The Quality People Value Stream
- People Supporting Process
- Organizational Supporting Processes
- Learning from Toyota

The first part is some-of an introduction. It explores what "company culture" means by referring to the work of Ed Schein. Then it introduces "the people value-stream" which the rest of the book is organized around. Part 2 is about the value stream itself while part 3 and 4 are the supporting processes of the people value stream.

Part 2 talks about how Toyota does hiring and how they grow the people within the company. It starts with the hiring and from there onto the training part (which had some duplication with Toyota Talent) and then moved into problem solving, one of the essential parts of the Toyota culture. It ends with how Toyota builds its image and works with the local communities to improve the life of its employees.

The third part starts by looking at the Toyota organizational structure, work teams and the team leader role. From there it moves to safe workplaces and how the standard problem solving is also applied to workplace safety problems. The last 2 chapters are about visual management and servant leadership. How management acts as servants and teachers to the workers, enabling the value-added work.

The fourth part looks at organizational supporting processes and especially HR processes. Toyota still want people to have a job for life, even though this is not common outside Japan. It talks about how Toyota deals with ups and downs in resourcing and moves to HR policies and rewarding policies (an very interesting chapter!). Chapter 15 is a short introduction to Hoshin Kanri.

The last part is about learning from Toyota, the "what can you do" part which many books end with. The first two chapters describes a couple of Toyota Way implementations within Toyota itself, to try to learn from that. The last chapter (probably the best) looks at lean implementations and wonders why they fail. It tries to find general change recommendations to try to learn from Toyota while creating your own company culture.

Parts of the book were extremely good and, at other times, parts of the book were somewhat long and boring. I'd give it 4.5 stars if I had that possibility and decided to go to 5 stars since I felt the last chapter was really very good.

A couple of things that I didn't like. Most of the book talks about Toyota in the US and seldom talks about the Toyota culture in Japan. It's obvious the authors are most familiar with the Toyota US situation. Also, most of the book still has a manufacturing focus. There is very little about other functions (e.g. product development) within the book itself. The culture in the different functions is probably similar, but will also have differences. Things like organizational structures and teamwork will be different in the different functions and thats not covered.

All in all, another great Toyota book. Highly recommended for people who are interested in how Toyota works and why. I wouldn't recommend it as your first Toyota book, I'd probably then start with the Toyota Way book and move to this one after that.

A Great Book

Jeff Liker has produced another superb book in the Toyota Way series, this time with the help of Michael Hoseus. This volume is an even more Herculean effort at assembling detail than the last were. Every step of the process of recruiting, hiring, training, developing, integrating, and supporting the people who add the value to Toyota products is spelled out. It is amazingly content-rich.

And, once again Liker captures the essential message that what the management of Toyota does is not just a series of techniques, but rather a complex, interacting, systemic way of thinking. The attention to detail, the relentless, never-ending improvement and the ability to adhere to a basic set of values in the face of challenge after challenge is nothing short of extraordinary. Toyota deservedly sits on top of the competitive pile. No one does it better and, as this wonderful volume shows so clearly, it's damn hard work.

I have stopped wondering if America manufacturers will 'get it'. They won't. As much as The Toyota Way was a result of a particular time and a particular culture, our time (now) and our culture (just win, baby) preclude wide acceptance of these methods. Just read the book and imagine almost any of these management methods being adopted by American managers and you will see how wide the gulf truly is. And the unvarnished truth is that that gulf hasn't narrowed appreciably in the past 40 years.

But as a guide the book is extraordinarily useful. I would think it would be excellent reading for Human Resources professionals and Organizational Change and Organizational Development people.

It is a highly commendable effort and a very good book.

Essential reading if you want to sustain Lean Improvements

Lean is not sustainable without the culture to support it. This culture is a complex amalgam of leadership values, open communication, training and development, and measures to build trust. People are the key and, indeed, the early name for the Toyota Production System was the "Respect for Humanity" system. "Toyota Culture" describes how a supportive and continuously improving culture has been developed at Toyota's American plants. The book goes into considerable detail of the "People Value Stream" at Toyota and how it is sustained and developed. It is a long book packed with insights and case studies, but there are no quick fixes here - no "do this and you'll be sorted in a year" magic pills. It's a slow process of building trust and working together. That's what lean is all about and this book is essential reading for any manager aiming to build a continuously improving lean organisation for the long term. It is true that there are no quick fixes but surely the results, and the joy of working in such an organisation, make the effort worthwhile.

Analysis in Isolation from Reality

This book is insanely expensive. The author of the book has material published online that I recommend be accessed and considered before making any investment here. One starting point is my list to 2011 article and my lengthy comment, easily found by looking for

Stephen Marrin: Evaluating the Quality of Intelligence Analysis: By What (Mis) Measure? With Comment by Robert Steele

This is a book, that like economists trapped on a desert island with a can of food and no can-opener, begin their plan with "assume a can-opener." Now having said that, I must also give the author credit: this is as good as it gets at the PhD level when writing in isolation from decades of experience. This is the "clean room" version of the craft of analysis.

Here is a short extract from my review of the article that was built into this book:

ROBERT STEELE: Interesting, certainly worth reading, but divorced from the fundamentals and out of touch with the real masters. Any publication that fails to cite Jack Davis, the dean of analytic tradecraf in the English language, is fatally flawed. Of course it would help if one were also in touch with the "new rules for the new craft of intelligence," but that may be too much to expect from a junior academic with limited real-world analytic experience who seems intent on citing only "approved" sources-a lack of source integrity that is also fatal. The article assumes that the four preconditions for sound analytics exist, and since they do not, at least in the US and UK and most other government intelligence communities, it is necessary to spell them out. Analysts are toads absent the following:

01 All-source collection including open source collection in 183 languages in near real-time-collection that is relevant, timely, and focused, not collection of convenience. It must also comprehend, collect, and present true cost economics with geospatial attributes at every datum point.

02) Back office and desktop analytic tools that integrate in one single open source package the eighteen functionalities identified by Gordon Oehler, Dennis McCormick, Diane Webb, and a handful of others in 1985. This still is not available today-Computer-Aided Tools for the Analysis of Science & Technology (CATALYST).

03) Deep personal knowledge of relevant history, culture, and language(s) pertinent to the matter at hand, and inclusive of a broad globlal multinational, multiagency, multidisciplinary, multidomain information-sharing and sense-making network (M4IS2)-the US security goons are nowhere near being able to comprehend the new security paradigm that demands full-spectrum human intelligence (HUMINT) across all slices, nationalities, and socio-economic ideo-cultural strata; and

04) An analytic model that is holistic, comprehensive, and centered on the public interest, at a minimum integrating the ten high-level threats to humanity, the twelve core policies that must be integrated; and the eight demographic challengers that will define the future with or without the USA. There are at least three models that could be usefully integrated: the revolution model, the expeditionary environment model, and the strategic analytic model.

Somewhat paradoxically, since I emphasize that intelligence (decision-support) is about outputs rather than inputs, it bears mention that the analytic process that produces intelligence is only as good as its inputs, its environment, and its receiving decision-makers. If the receiving decision-maker lacks integrity, then Paul Pillar in Intelligence and U.S. Foreign Policy: Iraq, 9/11, and Misguided Reform is absolutely right: no amount of intelligence with integrity can overcome policy without integrity, with ONE exception: if the intelligence with integrity is placed immediately and visibly in the public domain.

Jack Davis and his work are easily accessed by searching for the term "analytic tradecraft." My own work in this area over the past 30 years is easily found online, and catalogued at Phi Beta Iota the Public Intelligence Blog. It merits comment that there are eight "tribes" or communities of intelligence as decision-support, and all of them -- a few elements not-withstanding -- are incoherent and ineffective: academic, civil society, commerce, government, law enforcement, media, military, and non-governmental/non-profit. The biggest problem we have is the complete fragmentation of all of the disciplines and sub-disciplines; combine that with the iron curtains among the tribes, the bamboo curtains among organizations within each tribe, and the plastic curtains between individuals, and you have a morass that no amount of good "analytics" is going to master.

I strongly recommend the new book by Routledge, Routledge Companion to Intelligence Studies.

A useful, interesting and thought-provoking read

This book by Dr. Stephen Marrin presents a thought-provoking analysis of the current state and potential improvements related to the process of intelligence analysis as practiced within the US Intelligence Community. In addition to the discussion about a 'gap' between a practice of intelligence and related scholarship, the book offers new insights into such issues of interest to Intelligence Studies as a relationship between intelligence and social science, a balance between 'art' and 'science' of intelligence analysis, or problems and challenges connected with a process of intelligence analysis in the context of activities undertaken by individual analysts as well as regarding incorporation of these individual efforts into a broader institutional and organizational context. Dr. Marrin promotes the use of analogical thinking as a way to look at the work of intelligence analysts through a prism of experience accumulated by other academic and professional disciplines. In particular, the author of the book explores analogy between intelligence and a medical profession. In these regards, the included analysis not only leads to conclusions which have a practical application and as such can be of special value to intelligence, it can also serve as an inspiration and a source of methodology-related suggestions to those who would like to look at intelligence from the perspective of a discipline other than medicine or, alternatively, would like to look at their professional experience (assuming their expertise relates to a non-intelligence realm) from the perspective of intelligence. All in all, the book represents a truly useful and interesting read and is worth being recommended to both those familiar with the area of Intelligence Studies as well as those who know little about the field and seek to extend their related knowledge.
