Biophilic Design: The Theory, Science, and Practice of Bringing Buildings to Life, by Stephen R. Kellert, Judith Heerwagen, Martin Mador

"When nature inspires our architecture-not just how it looks but how buildings and communities actually function-we will have made great strides as a society. Biophilic Design provides us with tremendous insight into the 'why,' then builds us a road map for what is sure to be the next great design journey of our times."
-Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO and Founding Chairman, U.S. Green Building Council

"Having seen firsthand in my company the power of biomimicry to stimulate a wellspring of profitable innovation, I can say unequivocably that biophilic design is the real deal. Kellert, Heerwagen, and Mador have compiled the wisdom of world-renowned experts to produce this exquisite book; it is must reading for scientists, philosophers, engineers, architects and designers, and-most especially-businesspeople. Anyone looking for the key to a new type of prosperity that respects the earth should start here."
-Ray C. Anderson, founder and Chair, Interface, Inc.

The groundbreaking guide to the emerging practice of biophilic design

This book offers a paradigm shift in how we design and build our buildings and our communities, one that recognizes that the positive experience of natural systems and processes in our buildings and constructed landscapes is critical to human health, performance, and well-being. Biophilic design is about humanity's place in nature and the natural world's place in human society, where mutuality, respect, and enriching relationships can and should exist at all levels and should emerge as the norm rather than the exception.

Written for architects, landscape architects, planners, developers, environmental designers, as well as building owners, Biophilic Design: The Theory, Science, and Practice of Bringing Buildings to Life is a guide to the theory, science, and practice of biophilic design. Twenty-three original and timely essays by world-renowned scientists, designers, and practitioners, including Edward O. Wilson, Howard Frumkin, David Orr, Grant Hildebrand, Stephen Kieran, Tim Beatley, Jonathan Rose, Janine Benyus, Roger Ulrich, Bert Gregory, Robert Berkebile, William Browning, and Vivian Loftness, among others, address:
*

The basic concepts of biophilia, its expression in the built environment, and how biophilic design connects to human biology, evolution, and development.
*

The science and benefits of biophilic design on human health, childhood development, healthcare, and more.
*

The practice of biophilic design-how to implement biophilic design strategies to create buildings that connect people with nature and provide comfortable and productive places for people, in which they can live, work, and study.

Biophilic design at any scale-from buildings to cities-begins with a few simple questions: How does the built environment affect the natural environment? How will nature affect human experience and aspiration? Most of all, how can we achieve sustained and reciprocal benefits between the two?

This prescient, groundbreaking book provides the answers.

Review
"Stephen Kellert, a social ecologist, has spent much of his career thinking and writing about biophilia, the innate human affinity for nature. Biophilic Design is an exploration of how we cut ourselves off from nature in the way we design the buildings and neighborhoods where we live and work. And it's an argument for re-connecting these spaces to the natural world, with plenty of windows, daylight, fresh air, plants and green spaces, natural materials, and decorative motifs from the natural world." (Yale Environment 360, December 2009)

"…Kellert asserts that people "learn better, work more comfortably, and recuperate more successfully in buildings that echo the environment in which the human species evolved." He says there are a number of ways to improve worker productivity and retention and reduce absenteeism. The most basic step is to improve the availability of natural light. Kellert is analyzing the effect of biophilic design on office work productivity, absenteeism, number of sick days. Kellert believes there is a definite connection between biophilic spaces and improved productivity, and some studies point to a positive relationship." (dirt.asla.org, September 2009)

"By applying biophilia to design, the editors and contributors hope to go beyond the standard green architecture goal of simply lowering the environmental impact of buildings. They hope to enhance the human relationship with nature through buildings believing, that one's affinity for light or water should be incorporated into the placement of windows. The book is divided into three parts. The first provides a theory of biophilic design and offers general guidelines. The second offers a more focused look at health issues and the role of nature. The third examines applied instances of biophilic design. Summing Up: Recommended" (Choice, September 2009)

"These authors urge architects to do what they can to incorporate nature in the design of buildings." (GreenSource, April 2009)

"Biophilic Design collects descriptions of current destructive practices, analyzes their roots in human nature, and offers low-cost, low-impact strategies for change." (Architecture Boston; Nov/Dec 2008)

"Stephen Kellert's Biophilic Design…brings together biologists, ecologists, psychologists, architects, designers and city planners to probe the confluence of people, nature and design." (Miller-McCune.com, 7/14/08)

"Make no mistake: Biophilic Design, all 400 pages of it, is one of the best design books of this decade." (New Urban News, April-May 2008)

Recommending Biophilic Design
By Cheryl Charles
I finished reading Biophilic Design--having read every chapter--on a recent trip. I think it is one of the most important design books ever written, not just in the decade. Readers should know that this book is not just for architects, builders, designers or city planners. Its rich array of chapters brings the message, with clear and compelling examples, to life for any of us who care about creating spaces and places where nature and culture are in a vibrant, beautiful, and healthy balance. Everyone benefits--from individuals to families to whole communities.

Fundamental Human Relationship to Nature and Healing in Design
By James Baer
Stephen Kellert et al describe in detail the concept of biophilia in their book Biophilic Design: The Theory, Science and Practice of Bringing Buildings to Life. Biophilia, which until recently has not been a very well known topic of discussion, is the relationship between the natural human condition and the natural world, more specifically how people need an outlet to their natural environment. The description goes further on to discuss how a building's focus should emphasize the health of its inhabitants as well as its environmental and social impact.

As indicated by the title of the book, the organization of information is divided into three distinct parts as to leave no subject matter over looked; theory, science and practice. This comprehensive display of information does not leave room for argument due to the book's wide collection of topic ideas and professional backgrounds of its contributors. Scientists, sociologists, psychologists, architects and environmentalists give Biophilic Design the diverse background needed in order to successfully convey the essence of the subject, which is the relationship of man and nature in the physical built environment, as well as the psychological relationship we instinctively inherit as humans.

As part one discusses the theory of biophilic design, the reader is introduced to Edward O. Wilson, considered by most to be the first individual to elaborate on the idea of biophila in his publication of Biophilia in 1984. His original ideas influenced architects to consider how nature can impact constructed spaces and the environment through their designs. Outlines of projects and case studies reinforce Wilson's ideas that natural connections exist between human built forms and nature's fluid and organic geometries. Much of what has been built in our industries stems from what we view in the natural world, and this is by no means accidental. His thorough and quantitative analysis into the human-nature connection leads professionals to realize the essence of our humanity as our bond with nature. This leads humans to instinctively desire a connection with the natural environment and the inclusion of sustainable elements within the built form helps to ensure well-being.

The second part provides scientifically based evidence from human interactions within constructed space that have benefited from the effects of biophilic design. Chapter 6 in particular discuses Biophilic Theory and Research for Healthcare Design, and how facilities have incorporated natural elements to assist in the healing procedures of inpatient treatment centers. It discusses how the theory of biophilia and exposure of humans to nature will "reduce stress, lessen pain and foster improvements in other health outcomes (100)." There are obvious benefits to designing with natural sunlight, renewable materials and ventilation as they can reduce operational costs, but the social impact on one's health is a greater aspect that needs to be developed. The scientific data given for the inclusion of larger expanses of windows of a project in relation to the recovery time of patients clearly suggests a `no-turn-back' attitude by the authors towards having natural elements into the design of our hospitals. This hard evidence is much welcomed, as current implementations of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) buildings do not convey the emotional outcomes on their inhabitants upon their completion. This section provides the reader with new ideas for designing uniquely and specifically for each ecosystem as to preserve site-specific human connections, in which a person feels familiar to their surroundings, and not a visitor. A constant effort is made to preserving comfort and belonging to people and their built environments. As Alvar Aalto had created his rooftop terrace at the Paimio Sanatorium in Finland for patients suffering from tuberculosis, this design feature could be considered a precursor to modern-day biophilic design for drawing a distinct connection between a patient and the natural surrounding forest and landscape for the betterment of the patients.

The implementation of biophilic design into built form is discussed in part three, giving the reader an understanding and guidance for changing the current practice of sustainable design into a design that fosters a greater connection of man and nature. As the second part was presenting undeniable evidence of projects on the human quality, this section focuses primarily on case studies. It is interesting to see the varying scales of the projects, from a biophilic architectural meditation space to large-scale biophilic urban neighborhoods, thus showcasing the wide-range use of this idea. The discovery of how nature "creates a sense of pleasure, well-being and engagement with place (227)" ties back into earlier chapters of creating natural aesthetics that create an environmental and healthy refuge for building inhabitants. The way the authors fully integrate the ideas of biophila into the actual buildings is praiseworthy. Their suggestions are valid by designing structures that incorporate environmental features in every aspect though a buildings' situation on a site, mechanical systems and the internal atmosphere in relation to the human well being, and not as systematic building ornamentation add-ons such as solar panels. The entire psychological landscape of human feelings and emotions are at play, and how successful designs take these ideas into account are displayed as a formula for future iterations.

Biophilic design is presented as the inherent link of man and nature, and the authors describe projects of virtually all scales and sizes from small rooms within buildings to entire urban developments that are meant to include this way of thinking. Biophilia reinforces a person's place within their natural environment, and the design of the built landscape should respect and preserve the relationship to the natural space around man. The science and technological aspect in this way of thinking goes beyond what we have come to know as the "green" or "sustainable movement", as they only explore a limited aspect of the built world that is more concerned with conserving and re-using natural resources. Kellert proposes that there should be a greater push to achieve a fusion of man-made elements, human ideals, and their ecological counterparts. By educating both people and designers on this topic, professionals can then understand the importance of creating spaces that enhance human psychological aspects towards nature that will then translate to a thoughtful and positive atmosphere in which people live their lives. This book achieves not only capturing the audiences attention with the subject matter, but instills within each reader a desire to pursue a greater relationship with our environment and to educate our colleagues, friends and clients on the benefits nature can have on the health, well-being, and recovery of patients and building users. This focus on the emphasis of a human-nature connection will undoubtedly aid in our development and planning of healthcare facilities.

" From Where Do We Come?: Revisiting Our Past While Paving the Way Forward " by Jamilah Williams-Tetterton

This book is so special to us because it is in the traditional griot of parent to child reading we need to return to. The most profound question one can ask is "From where do we come?" It opens the eyes of our babies and instills the pride that our children need to know. It is written brilliantly easy and clear but fun. My daughters totally relate and could not wait to hear the story right out the box!

Jamilah you did an excellent job

The author and the book are amazing avenues for change in the world today. I strongly recommend this book to parents, teachers, educators, and teens. I am instructional coach in central Florida. We use lower level books for our struggling students to set the tone for thematic units that deal with the big issues of Bullying, Character, Culture, Overcoming Obstacles, Choices and Decisions, etc. This book is my next project in creating a new thematic unit. It is the much needed conversation.

On Heidegger's Being and Time, by Reiner Schürmann, Simon Critchley

On Heidegger's Being and Time is an outstanding exploration of Heidegger's most important work by two major philosophers. Simon Critchley argues that we must see Being and Time as a radicalization of Husserl's phenomenology, particularly his theories of intentionality, categorial intuition, and the phenomenological concept of the a priori. This leads to a reappraisal and defense of Heidegger's conception of phenomenology.

In contrast, Reiner Schürmann urges us to read Heidegger 'backward', arguing that his later work is the key to unravelling Being and Time. Through a close reading of Being and Time Schürmann demonstrates that this work is ultimately aporetic because the notion of Being elaborated in his later work is already at play within it. This is the first time that Schürmann's renowned lectures on Heidegger have been published.

The book concludes with Critchley's reinterpretation of the importance of authenticity in Being and Time. Arguing for what he calls an 'originary inauthenticity', Critchley proposes a relational understanding of the key concepts of the second part of Being and Time: death, conscience and temporality.

Two perspectives on Heidegger...
By Brian C.
I am a little annoyed with amazon. I just finished reading this book only to discover that the last three pages are missing. So I have not actually read this entire book but I am going to review it anyway! I am not recommending that anyone who is interested in Heidegger avoid purchasing this book (it is a very good book and I am sure most of the copies are complete) but if you do buy this book I would recommend taking a gander at Simon Critchley's final essay and making sure it goes all the way to page 152 before you read the whole book and fill it up with notations as I have done. It is possible the pages fell out after I bought it since a few more pages fell out while I was in the process of writing this review. While the content of this book is excellent the binding certainly leaves something to be desired!

The book is really excellent and provides two different perspectives on Heidegger from two top-notch scholars. Simon Critchley has two essays in the book. In the first essay Critchley reads Being and Time in light of Heidegger's lectures on the History of the Concept of Time in which Heidegger outlines his debt to Husserlian phenomenology. Heidegger in particular takes up the notion of categorial intuition and applies it to our understanding of Being, that is, "being is an aspect of phenomenological seeing, in some sense a matter of phenomenological intuition" for Heidegger, "against the modern philosophical self-understanding, phenomenology grants to being a new sense of non- or, better, trans-subjective givenness" (10). Being is not an ontic property of objects (we cannot point to the being of the chair in the same way we can point to its legs or its brownness) but being, in the form of the copula, articulates our experience and "the notion of categorial intuition is the thought that the being of things, that in virtue of which things are intelligible or understandable, their substance, quality or whatever, is something intuited, sighted or seen in those things; it is something intentionally given" (19). This is an extremely important point in terms of understanding Heidegger's philosophy as a whole. Dasein does not just relate to beings, it goes beyond beings and understands the Being of beings, but the Being of beings is given (which is why the ready-to-hand, or Zuhanden, is a determination of the Being of beings and is not a subjective projection). The fact that Dasein understands beings in their Being is why fundamental ontology must pass through the regional ontology of Dasein. For anyone who is interested in reading more about the Husserlian influence on Heidegger, as well as the ways in which Heidegger deviated from his Husserlian legacy, I highly recommend taking a look at Heidegger and the Project of Fundamental Ontology (Suny Series in Contemporary Continental Philosophy) by Jacques Taminiaux. Critchley draws directly on Taminiaux in his own analysis.

The second essay by Critchley is a critique of the notion of authenticity in an attempt to respond to the "urgent task of Heidegger interpretation," which is, "to try to defuse the systematic link between Heidegger's philosophy and his politics" (141). Critchley sees this systematic link in Heidegger's understanding of authenticity, historicity, and being-with. Any authentic understanding of history lies in Dasein's "self-understanding of being human, i.e. finitude" (139) which means being-towards-death. It is also a fact that Dasein is always already Mitsein (being-with) so if, "authentic Dasein is always already Mitsein, then such historicizing has to be what Heidegger calls co-historicizing. An authentic individual life, Heidegger would seem to be suggesting, cannot be lead in isolation and opposition to the shared life of the community" (140). It is true that our inauthentic mode of being-with is based in the They but authentic being-with, and authentic historicizing, Heidegger determines as destiny, "the authentic communal mode of Mitsein that masters the inauthenticity of das Man is das Volk, the people" (140). This is precisely where, in Critchley's opinion, Heidegger's thought falls into the trap of Nazism. I think there is a lot that could be done in this area in terms of pointing out the short-comings in Heidegger's analyses of being-with, authenticity, historicity, destiny, and the life of the community, etc.. It is clear, in my opinion, that Heidegger made an error here and probably more than one. Simon Critchley points out a number of errors. Critchley argues that Heidegger's interpretation of our understanding of death as non-relational is mistaken, that Heidegger's analysis of being-with ignores the face-to-face ethical relation, that Heidegger's analysis of time misses the way in which we are always too late to grasp the present heroically, and that Heidegger's analysis of conscience misses the way in which the conscience is an interior mark left by our relations with the other (the influence of Levinas on Critchley's criticisms of Heidegger should be obvious to anyone at all familiar with Levinas' work). All of these are, I think, valid criticisms but I still think a lot more could be done in this area in terms of searching out the sources of Heidegger's decision to throw in with the Nazis and critiquing those sources.

Reiner Schurmann takes a very different approach in his commentary on Being and Time then Simon Critchley. Part of what makes this such a valuable volume is getting the two different perspectives. While Critchley reads Heidegger, at least in his first essay, primarily in terms of his influences Schurmann reads Being and Time in the light of Heidegger's later philosophy. Schurmann lays stress, therefore, on the event character of Dasein, or "the event by which Dasein opens a world" (71). One can already see in Being and Time the primacy of this event of truth (Ereignis in Heidegger's later formulation) in relation to any attempt at scientific metaphysics. The event character, "is the trait that shows most clearly the difference between metaphysical ontologies (which found the sciences) and phenomenological ontology (which is said to be the foundation of metaphysical ontologies). The step from metaphysical ontologies to fundamental ontology is of a different kind from the step from the sciences to metaphysical ontologies" (71). This is the move, in the later Heidegger, from metaphysics to being-historical-thinking. Schurmann also locates the source of Heidegger's later understanding of calculative thinking in inauthentic totalization and the source of Heidegger's later understanding of genuine thinking in authentic totalization, "calculative totalization prefigures, 'calculative thinking', and existential totalization prefigures 'letting-be, releasement, and eventually Ereignis'" (116). In inauthentic totalization "Dasein is a whole by summation, summarizing objectively given experiences" (112). In authentic totalization, "Dasein does not affix itself to one or another particular possibility. Rather, all its concrete possibiities are unified out of Being-towards-death, out of the future" (113). These are just a few examples of the way in which Schurmann connects Being and Time to the later Heidegger. Schurmann also has a number of helpful diagrams and charts diagramming various aspects of Being and Time. For anyone who reads and enjoys Schurmann's account of Being and Time in this work I would highly recommend his book Broken Hegemonies (Studies in Continental Thought). I have actually just started it, and am not very far yet at all, but it is so good that I feel confident in recommending it despite not having read much of it. Schurmann also wrote another book on Heidegger I have not read but is supposed to be very good: Heidegger on Being and Acting: From Principles to Anarchy. Despite not having read it I feel certain, after reading his lengthy essay in this work and the first sections of Broken Hegemonies, that it is excellent as well.

All in all I would say this is an indispensable companion to Being and Time despite its rather shoddy binding.

Great intro to Heidegger. I'd recommend to read it before reading Being and Time.

Good Overview and Critique of Authenticity
By M. DeWitt
This book is a great study tool. Critchley does a wonderful job illustrating the history of Heidegger's early thought. He takes Being and Time as a new development of the phenomenological tradition and thus gives the Husserlian origins as well as Heidegger's own early lectures on this movement in philosophy. It is an existite overview for people approaching Heidegger without any background in turn of the 20th century German thought.

Schurmann's notes seem to be a little more like graduate student's class notes. Beneficial for some, but nothing stellar.

Critchley's essay on Authenticity is also very interesting and worth the price of the book.

Aircraft Propulsion and Gas Turbine Engines, by Ahmed F. El-Sayed

The escalating use of aircraft in the 21st century demands a thorough understanding of engine propulsion concepts, including the performance of aero engines. Among other critical activities, gas turbines play an extensive role in electric power generation, and marine propulsion for naval vessels and cargo ships.

In the most exhaustive volume to date, this text examines the foundation of aircraft propulsion: aerodynamics interwoven with thermodynamics, heat transfer, and mechanical design. With a finely focused approach, the author devotes each chapter to a particular engine type, such as ramjet and pulsejet, turbojet, and turbofan. Supported by actual case studies, he illustrates engine performance under various operating conditions.

Part I discusses the history, classifications, and performance of air breathing engines. Beginning with Leonardo and continuing on to the emergence of the jet age and beyond, this section chronicles inventions up through the 20th century. It then moves into a detailed discussion of different engine types, including pulsejet, ramjet, single- and multi-spool turbojet, and turbofan in both subsonic and supersonic applications.

The author discusses Vertical Take Off and Landing aircraft, and provides a comprehensive examination of hypersonic scramjet and turbo ramjet engines. He also analyzes the different types of industrial gas turbines having single-and multi-spool with intercoolers, regenerators, and reheaters.

Part II investigates the design of rotating compressors and turbines, and non-rotating components, intakes, combustion chambers, and nozzles for all modern jet propulsion and gas turbine engine systems, along with their performance. Every chapter concludes with illustrative examples followed by a problems section; for greater clarity, some provide a listing of important mathematical relations.

good text but no exceptional
By J.Y. Xing
This is a good text with a lot of examples. However, the author doesn't seem to be vary famous or recognized in this field. Indeed, Mr. El-Sayed publications seem very limited. Moreover, there are several typos in the text and the author uses several Wikipedia references for the historical introduction. In my opinion, Wikipedia is unacceptable as reference for this kind of textbook even for non technical parts.

A lot of matter is covered by the author but some parts are very repetitive. Indeed, approximately half of the book deals with cycle analysis of the various aero-engine configurations.

Here is the contents of the book.

This book is a well organized solid starting point for air breathing detail turbine engine design
By Isis
A very helpful, well organized informative detail design reference book. Great for individual component detail design as well as total engine overview design. I earned my BSAE in Air Breathing Propulsion from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Daytona Beach, FL) using this book for my entire last year. This book is a solid starting point for air breathing detail turbine engine design. Its worth the price and the weight it adds to your bookshelf (or bag).

Under Different Stars (The Kricket Series), by Amy A. Bartol

Kricket Hollowell never wished upon stars. She was too busy hiding in plain sight, eluding Chicago’s foster care system. As her eighteenth birthday approaches, she now eagerly anticipates the day she’ll stop running and finally find her place in the world.

That day comes when she meets a young Etharian soldier named Trey Allairis, who has been charged with coming to Earth to find Kricket and transport her to her true home. As danger draws close, he must protect her until she can wield the powers she cannot use on Earth…and he soon realizes that counting a galaxy of stars would be easier than losing this extraordinary girl.

Kyon knows the powerful depths of Kricket’s gifts—gifts he’ll control when he takes her for his tribe and leads the forces that will claim Ethar and destroy his enemies, starting with Trey Allairis. Now, Kricket faces the most difficult choice of her life: whether to wage a battle for survival or a fight for love.

Initially interesting but ultimately disappointing
By Beth Fridh
I had high hopes for this book; it has great reviews and the summary was interesting. I'm a fan of the genre, but I had problems with things right from the start. The protagonist is not only a street-smart orphan, she's tall, curvy, blonde, has violet eyes and is so gorgeous that she could be a model. I was actually willing to overlook all of this - and her ridiculous name - once the action picked up, and I did enjoy the early chapters of the book.

At a certain point, however, things just got ridiculous. In Ethar, Kricket is alluringly tiny! All the assorted alpha males are dying to protect her! She is literally a genius! Everyone is charmed by her humbleness and wit! Oh, and not only is she royalty, but she has unprecedented psychic powers that every faction wants to exploit! And while the plot was decent at first, it suddenly devolved into a cheesy romance novel, complete with longing glances, evil suitors and heaving bosoms. While at first Kricket had plans of escaping back to Earth or attending college, she suddenly seemed to lose her backbone and smarts, and just sat around hoping Trey would love her.

Things did pick back up a bit at the end, so maybe there's a chance that things will improve in future books, but I won't be reading them to find out. A disappointing heroine, a bland male lead, and an interesting but ultimately wasted premise left me alternately bored and groaning. To top it all off, the numerous grammatical mistakes ("baron" instead of "barren," "reign" instead of "rein," etc.) and typos drove me nuts.

A thrilling, beautifully written world, that captured my heart and has me eager for more...

4 STARS

Ooh boy, where do I even begin? UNDER DIFFERENT STARS was a thrilling ride that I absolutely loved! I REALLY enjoyed UNDER DIFFERENT STARS, a lot! I was hooked from the very beginning and loved the pacing of this book. I never found myself bored or wanting to put it down for something else. I always wanted to keep reading when I knew it was time to do something else. I enjoyed the characters and their sharp personalities, and the obstacles they faced. The villains were chilling enough to make me want to hate them, yet intriguing enough that I wanted to see what would happen if they got the upper hand. The world-building was fascinating! I thought the idea of a different planet on the verge of war all fighting to all claim the same girl with extraordinary gifts, beyond thrilling and totally engaging! The romance was right up my alley too. I'm a sucker for a good love/hate romance, with a thrilling adventure to push them together, to be nothing short of romantic. Yeah, I know, I'm weird like that...lol! But I know some people found this book too be lacking, but not me, not one bit!

I loved Kricket to pieces. Even though she was a little too perfect, her fierce personality and strong demeanor won me over her perfectness. She looked like a barbie doll but with violet eyes. All the guys loved her and swooned over her, and wanted to become her consort (husband). But like I said, her attitude is quick-witted and fierce, and was enough to make me love her regardless of the flaws, or should I say flaw-less traits. She doesn't notice her flawless beauty, or thinks she's better then anyone, or anything like that. Plus I don't usually read books with flawless charters, so it was a nice change to my normal flawed characters.

Her love interest Trey was definitely hot, and I found myself swooning over him from time to time. There was a lot of guys rallying for Kricket's heart, but Trey couldn't official be one of those guys, because he was ranked at lower royalty. So he pretty much wasn't on Kricket's level. But that didn't matter to either of them, they loved each other and towards the end were ready to fight for each other. Trey was very protective of Kricket, a protectiveness that went above and beyond his duties as just being her guard. I could see he generally loved her, even if in the beginning he didn't want to admit it to himself or to her.

THE PLOT

Kricket has lived her life on the run from police, social workers, foster families, and everyone else determined to tame her. She's had her fair share of pain and abandonment since her parents died, and was forced to endure numerous horrific foster families. But Kricket has finally had enough and is on the run waiting out the last month until she becomes of age and can finally take care of herself, without having to look over her shoulder. But unfortunately, for Kricket, that never happens, because just when she thinks her life can't get anymore complicated then it is, she's kidnapped and taken under different stars...

Kricket's always known she was different. Her eyes are violet, her hair grows back after it's cut, and she can tell when someones not being truthful. She knows it, but still she tries to blend in and only wants to turn eighteen so she can be responsible for her own self. But a month before her eighteenth birthday, three guys resembling herself with violet eyes track her down claiming they're taking her "home" to pay for her "crimes". A home she knows nothing about, a place even more controlling then the home she has now. A home that's a whole new world, under different stars...

After being kidnapped from earth and forced to the planet Ethar, Kricket is dragged through harsh lands to make it to the capital of Skye City, where she is to be tried for her "Crimes", crimes she knows nothing about. But once she arrives, she's swept into conspires after conspires, as two house (territories) battle for possession of her, a battle she has no say in, a battle that she cannot win, because either way the outcome is the same: She will be controlled, she will be used, and she will be helpless, one way or another, unless she finds another way to beat them all at their own game...

But through it all, she only finds solace in the hands of Trey, her kidnapper. Where he has been the only one to break through the heart of stone she has formed, and strait to the inner core of her being, and has become the one thing she desires above all else. But first she will have to fight to gain control over herself, and ward off the many men trying to claim her, and tame her.

I can't really think of anything that I didn't enjoy, because the entire time I was glued to the pages and couldn't get enough. Amy A. Bartol has gone on my list of new favorite authors of 2015! I'm definitely eager to see what else she brings us, and curious about her first series!

Overall, UNDER DIFFERENT STARS was a fantastic book that I absolutely adored. With no obvious reservations about it, and a plot that is addicting and thrilling, and a romance that captured my heart and has me eager for more! I can't wait to continuing this series and see how it all ends! If this review has you intrigued, then I think it's definitely worth a shot, because I was not disappointed one bit!

Not Kidding. My #1 book of the year!
By Shelly Crane
If you know me, you know how I adore my Amy Bartol. A lot. It could be classified as an obsession. She's all-around amazing.

But we're not going to talk about Bartol, we're going to talk about her amazing book. And this review is completely unbiased! I don't have a lot of reading time so I'm very stingy and picky with the books I read. So when I was given (begged for) this ARC of UDS, Amy said no pressure. Now, the book's been out for weeks and I'm finally able to get to it and I'm KICKING myself for not making myself lose a night of sleep sooner! (4am)

Holy Hot Alien Trey, Batman!

He was fighting it so hard in the beginning, poor guy. Trying to do the right thing. And then kept on trying to do the right thing, but Kricket kept right on inching her way into his world and his heart until she was there to stay. He was an aggressive, strong, alpha, tattooed, military leader, good guy, rake you with his eyes kind of guy that was blind-sided by this girl who turned out to be nothing like they imagined she would when they went to find her. He gets so frustrated with her, but it's because he wants what he cant have, he wants to protect her, he knows that things are about to go bad real fast when they get 'home', and he'd being pulled in several directions. I felt for him. Even when he was mad at her and being an idiot, I could still understand the struggle. But he would always come back around and make you forget it in not time. He was so alpha and I love that. Her protection was the most important thing above all else and when she was in danger all his walls fell down, and you'd see his true feelings, even though sometimes Kricket couldn't even see them. And his little cute jealous ticks with their friends and the other 'suitors'. Adorable. When he decides something, look out, cause that boy is determined. He is my favorite book boy of the year.

The app on my phone almost short circuited because of the heat between these two. I'll name a few instances. The pool, when Trey "saves her". I love when Jax tries to take her and Trey is not having any of it. Two, shower scene that was so, so hot but nothing actually happened at all. It broke my and Kricket's heart at the same time. Like...whoa. Instance number three, the first time he calls her Kitten...and anytime following that. Four, the fountain. Five, when he tells her what he did the night after the fountain in regards to a certain female and the whole 'missed birthday' conversation. Six, "Undergarments? Is that what you call those polar little monsters?" You get the gist of that one. So hot and swoony and adorable.

"You can trust me with your heart."

And Kricket, oh Kricket. Poor girl. Been to hell and back again and no one even bothered to buy her a t-shirt for her troubles. I loved her, too. She was spunky without being stupid. She never did these outrageously idiotic things to get into trouble where she had to be rescued or anything. She didn't let them walk all over her, but she cried and had moments where it was all too much. She was 'human' and though this was a fantasy book, it was real. I wanted to take her for coffee and get some names of people to kick butts of. She was awesome. She tried so hard to be brave and strong, to do what was the right thing, not just whatever her little heart desired. She wasn't selfish. She understood that there was a big picture to this whole thing. She understood sacrifice.

And I LOVED the supporting cast. I mean LOVED them. That hardly ever happens for me. Like ever. Jax and Wayra were my absolute favorite. We didn't see Trey's brother Victus very much, but I know he'll be back. And I'm sure they'll be drama there, because it was hinted at. Maybe the family will want him to commit to Kricket and he may even have a crush on her himself, who knows. Trey's first intended, Charisma, we never saw (hallelujah!) but I'm pretty sure that won't last. She'll probably come back in book 2 as well, maybe even with a vengeance, but I'm happy with how things went. I was so, so, so happy that Trey didn't pull some parading-Charisma-around-in-front-of-Kricket stunt to hurt her and try to get her to move on. I waited for it and just knew it was coming but was so happy that Amy didn't follow the predictable route. I can't stand when couples try to use that stuff on each other when they love each other, even if they 'think' it's for a good reason. I hate it. So, bravo, Amy for not falling prey to typical YA cliches.

This book was about a dystopian society. It was fascinating to read all about the things, words, food, animals, tons of things that Amy created for it. If you love to sink into a completely new world, then this is for you. Lots of romance and laughs. I literally could not put it down. You need to read this.

I'm in love with paranormal\dystopian again!

6 out of 5 stars from me!
