Intro to Social Science
By SteF
This book gets right to the point. It's very easy to read even, for a subject like sociology. I am very happy with this book. This book however, does change from one edition to another. My professor was using an older edition and some of the key terms she discussed were not in my book. The chapter placement also changes.

Very nice text book
By A. Gish
Great book, for what it is! Social Science can be a very boring topic, but this book is so informative that it keeps you interested. Very non-biased in describing and informing on the topics of race and religion.

Good, not great.
By Mark De Los Gatos
This look at Social Science Theory is required reading for many majors. I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to work in any one of the sub disciplines of social science; political science, economics, anthropology, psychology, sociology, and geography. Really, though, I basically just summed up the whole book. I guess what I really recommend is buying a textbook on any one of those disciplines aforementioned!

I found the reading of this book to be somewhat hellish, as the author, David Colander, makes analogies that are hard to understand and quite lengthy. He also uses language that is odd at best. Putting it kindly, it's hard to follow at times.

The next eleven chapters delve deeply into the elements of infrared technology. Chapter 13 explains the functional relationships between the various system elements and the effects of their interactions when assembled into a system. In Chapter 14 the reader is invited to watch the development of an infrared search system for commercial jet transports.
Part II contains an in-depth treatment of the applications of infrared techniques to the solution of military, industrial, medical, and scientific problems. It contains nearly 1400 annotated references to the infrared literature of the world. The annotations summarize the content, describe the hardware, details its performance and examine the significant results. The references are carefully arranged, extensively indexed, and does not contain citations to the classified or report literature, a feature appreciated by most readers. For those readers having the necessary credentials, Appendix 4 is a guide to the unpublished and classified literature of the infrared.

This book is a classic in the field
By Jeffrey Lee
Pretty much the best book you'll find in the area of infrared system engineering. I just started learning about this field, and it gives a very clear and lucid introduction to this area. I was referred to this book by somebody who has been in the field for a long time and who still uses this book for reference. Though the technology is out-dated, the book is dominated by concepts and is relevant to those trying to understand the arcane field of IR.

Gold standard for the field
By Brian D. Pendell
There's really nothing to say about this product. It is, and has been, the best book on the subject for forever.

My main concern is that it does spend a number of pages describing the use of slide rules for computation which are no longer produced. An updated version detailing a computer algorithm would be appreciated. It also seems a little lacking in the mathematical theory, devoting only one chapter to these details.

The fundamental difference between technology when the book was initially published and today is the revolution in computing technology, and the subsequent revolution in computer simulation and modeling. Accordingly, a future update should be revised to include more mathematical theory -- and more examples -- of use to software models.

But even with these weaknesses, IMO this is a "must-have" for anyone interested in this field.

The "classic" text, still relevant in 2014
By S. Austin
I am a consultant and frequently need to get up to speed quickly on technical topics related to the projects I support. I asked a fellow optical systems designer what I should read to get smart on IR sensing systems and he simply said "the Hudson book." Well, this is that book; published in 1969, very little of it has become obsolete in that time. Yes, he talks about Radiation Calculator slide rules versus Matlab programs for numerically solving the equations of radiance, but the basic math is still the same. It's definitely the first book you'll reach for when you want a thorough introduction to all aspects of IR sensing systems. Just supplement it with some contemporary material on uncooled microbolometers and you're set.

Reading and the Victorians (The Nineteenth Century Series), by Juliet John

What did reading mean to the Victorians? This question is the key point of departure for Reading and the Victorians, an examination of the era when reading underwent a swifter and more radical transformation than at any other moment in history. With book production handed over to the machines and mass education boosting literacy to unprecedented levels, the norms of modern reading were being established. Essays examine the impact of tallow candles on Victorian reading, the reading practices encouraged by Mudie's Select Library and feminist periodicals, the relationship between author and reader as reflected in manuscript revisions and corrections, the experience of reading women's diaries, models of literacy in Our Mutual Friend, the implications of reading marks in Victorian texts, how computer technology has assisted the study of nineteenth-century reading practices, how Gladstone read his personal library, and what contemporary non-academic readers might owe to Victorian ideals of reading and community. Reading forms a genuine meeting place for historians, literary scholars, theorists, librarians, and historians of the book, and this diverse collection examines nineteenth-century reading in all its personal, historical, literary, and material contexts, while also asking fundamental questions about how we read the Victorians' reading in the present day.

Review
'This timely collection substantially advances our understanding of the practices of Victorian readers by showcasing some of the diverse recent methodologies that have attempted to capture them. The approaches represented range from analysis of the sometimes difficult material realities of reading in the nineteenth century, through considerations of its political and ideological effects, to explorations of its deepest meanings at the level of the individual writer, editor, bookseller and reader. The diversity of methods brought together here is not only likely to encourage productive debate among scholars of this burgeoning field, but also to demonstrate the importance of reception studies to literary scholarship more broadly.' Mary Hammond, University of Southampton, UK 'These reader friendly essays convey the excitement of discovering how 150 years ago reading transformed people's lives. We learn how our forebears illuminated a reading space, created through diaries a life that counts, copiously registered their opinions in marginalia, and taught women that reading can be a dynamic, collaborative activity. We also learn that privileging reading might suppress other needful skills such as observation and imagination. These path-breaking studies significantly enrich the history we've inherited both of books and of readers.' Robert L. Patten, School of Advanced Study, University of London

The New Charasmatics by Michael G. Moriarty
By Emerald66
I've read several books on the subject and like The New Charasmatics best. The topic can be very confusing for many Christians, but Moriarity does a great job of clearly sharing the history and people involved in the various movements. He went to a Charasmatic bible college and was a former Assemblies of God pastor (in fact his brother still is). As a result, he writes this book from a fair, balanced, and loving perspective. He notes that he spent seven years researching the subject prior to writing the book. My only disappointment is that the book was published in 1992 and so readers won't find information about how these movements have continued and changed over past 18 years. But the foundation I gained from this book has been invaluable. I would highly recommend it be the first book you read on the subject.

Sticky Reputations: The Politics of Collective Memory in Midcentury AmericaFrom Routledge

Sticky Reputations focuses on reputational entrepreneurs and support groups shaping how we think of important figures, within a crucial period in American history – from the 1930s through the 1950s. Why are certain figures such as Adolf Hitler, Joe McCarthy, and Martin Luther King cemented into history unable to be challenged without reputational cost to the proposer of the alternative perspective? Why are the reputations of other political actors such as Harry Truman highly variable and changeable? Why, in the 1930s, was it widely believed that American Jews were linked to the Communist Party of America but by the 1950s this belief had largely vanished and was not longer a part of legitimate public discourse? This short, accessible book is ideal for use in undergraduate teaching in social movements, collective memory studies, political sociology, sociological social psychology, and other related courses.

Medicine in Translation: Journeys with My Patients, by Danielle Ofri

From a doctor Oliver Sacks has called a “born storyteller,” a riveting account of practicing medicine at a fast-paced urban hospital

For two decades, Dr. Danielle Ofri has cared for patients at Bellevue, the oldest public hospital in the country and a crossroads for the world’s cultures. In Medicine in Translation she introduces us, in vivid, moving portraits, to her patients, who have braved language barriers, religious and racial divides, and the emotional and practical difficulties of exile in order to access quality health care. Living and dying in the foreign country we call home, they have much to teach us about the American way, in sickness and in health.

Review
“Danielle Ofri is a finely gifted writer, a born storyteller as well as a born physician.”—Oliver Sacks, MD, author of The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat

“A gifted storyteller, Ofri provides vivid details that bring readers right into the exam room with her . . . describing how her patients’ histories stirred her to practice medicine more compassionately, inspired her with their hope and fortitude.”─Sarah Halzack, Washington Post

“Danielle Ofri’s new work presents the reader with artfully controlled chaos. . . . Brisk, fast-paced, and organized with an eye both to variety and recurrence.”─Rachel Hadas, Times Literary Supplement

“Her writing tumbles forth with color and emotion. She demonstrates an ear for dialogue, a humility about the limits of her medical training, and an extraordinary capacity to be touched by human suffering.”—Jan Gardner, Boston Globe

A worthy book
By Muffyboy
From the moment you pick up the book Medicine in Translation, you are drawn into Dr. Ofri's world of medicine, home life and music. These three are the pillars of this book, a sensitive and sometimes heart -rendering portrayal of one very busy doctor's work with patient's many of whom have traveled a long distance between their homeland where torture has maimed their bodies . Along with others who have left a country for more benign reasons, these people arrive at Bellevue Hospital needing medical attention and come under the care of an especially caring, doctor who attempts to provide state of the art medical attention to those who are often undocumented aliens lacking health insurance, money and even a basic language in which to discuss the medical problem. None of this comes easy, not to the beleaguered people who need the help, nor to the doctor who wishes to bestow the treatment learned in medical school but who is often stymied by governmental regulations that govern the dispensation of needed help. A young woman, a mother trying to bring her child over to this country is weakened by a faulty heart that a transplant would certainly remedy and is prevented from applying for it because she is without the proper papers. Imagine trying to work out treatment plans as the two - patient and doctor sitting in one room connected by a telephone and an invisible translator, an unsung hero at Bellevue Hospital who listens to both doctor and patient translating symptoms and intended high-tech medical regime.

Dr. Ofri mulls over the difficult situations she encounters at work often mixing her thoughts with pieces from her own life. An approachable doctor, she meets with one of her elderly patients in the building where he lives to discuss his wish to leave the country (and his ailing wife) to return to China for his remaining years. The ethics of leaving a wife who soon will not be able to recognize him to return to his country on first hearing seems callous and maybe selfish to her, but true to herself, she ponders these and other issues, intertwining them with thoughts about her children and their developing lives lived so near yet so far from the problems that her patients wrestle with, thoughtful interludes which provide a mirror on the readers' own lives.

A budding cellist, Ofri often expresses her thoughts, medical ones, in terms of music that is always under the surface of her thinking. One patient was advised to have a pacemaker installed in his body even after a first installation did him a great disservice. Despite his deep reluctance to having a new one implanted he agreed to do whatever his beloved doctor suggest he do, based on a long association with her since her days of internship, and so, it was installed. Very much aware of her role in his well being, she listened to his heart some weeks after the procedure and "was greeted with the steady metronome of the pacemaker beat" an unavoidable pairing of the pacemaker with a trusty tool of musicians. She doesn't stop there: thinking of those who wrecked havoc on the once pristine bodies of so many of her patients she says: "Even if some humans seemed to exist solely to offer pain and destruction , there were others who existed only to create beauty. The chance to feel the hem of that beauty graze the cheek, was sometimes the only thing that kept the last straw at bay."

The book deals with the very timely issue of immigration which often allows people to think of a large mass of people who are essentially faceless to the average person. In this book Dr. Ofri gives voice to people who, though lacking legal status share in our humanity and whose bodies are as vulnerable as are ours. We not only hear their stories through the pen of one person who works with them, but we are helped to understand the ethical issue of turning away people in medical need through the prism of the dilemmas as seen by this particular doctor who cares for and about them. Although she remains politically neutral about the issue of immigration it becomes clear that pathways to citizenship should be opened to people who arrive on our shores to work and contribute to this country.

The reader is allowed a glimpse into the life and thoughts of a compassionate doctor, mother, musician and writer who is somehow weaving these aspects of her life into a book so worth reading. Enjoy.

When Medicine Is A healing Art for the patient and doctor
By Jean E. Canavan
As an attending physician at New York's Bellevue Hospital, Danielle Ofri has used
her superb writing talent to offer the reader a compelling, compassionate and sometimes humorous story of how she and her patients struggle with their medical
problems and the difficulty both have in coming to terms with the cultural and language differences of a largely immigrant, poor, population. Never judgmental or
condescending, Dr. Ofri gives us a window into how one doctor comes to terms with
her own emotions in treating such a complex patient population. I found it to be a real page turner.

Medicine in Translation - Danielle Ofri looks at medicine from both sides now
By Evelyn Sharenov
Danielle Ofri is a triple threat - practicing physician, renowned author, and editor of the Bellevue Literary review. With her earlier collections she has taken her place in the growing pantheon of physicians who write - but rest assured her stories engage readers on a deeply human level; no medical education required. Ofri's world requires much of her; it takes empathy, insight, respect and patience to care for the poor and disenfranchised.

As an attending physician at the nation's oldest urban hospital, Bellevue, Ofri is ideally placed to observe the human condition up close and personal. In `Medicine In Translation' Ofri continues to write of her professional growth. Along the way, she and her family - husband, two children, big dog - decide to take a sabbatical in Costa Rica where Ofri will become more fluent in Spanish, in order to better understand the needs of many of those who come under her care. After all the arrangements are made for this journey, Ofri discovers she is pregnant. Where others would have changed their plans, Ofri goes ahead and has her child in Costa Rica.

Her experiences provide the juxtaposition that differentiates `Medicine In Translation' from her other essay collections. Working on the floor at Bellevue feels like rapid travel between foreign countries. Ofri's patients share our struggles, but do so from the foreign lands of illness, language and poverty. Becoming a patient - pregnant and a mother - on foreign soil, goes a long way to increase understanding between cultures.

Ofri poignantly and honestly describes her experiences at Bellevue: "I took a moment to contemplate the capacity of American society to set aside superficial appearances and consider the person beneath the face. I was not optimistic." She deals with the frustrations of scamming patients, underserved populations, a medical system gone haywire. The only thing that can work in the face of such odds is the human factor. Ofri does a brave thing in stepping through the looking glass and brings more of herself to her practice as a result.

Adventurer, Conqueror, King: Maybe it serves a niche market, but it serves it very well
By M. W. Perry
The Adventurer, Conqueror, King System (or ACKS) is one of the so-called Dungeons and Dragons "retro-clones", games which emulate earlier editions of the rules so that new players can learn the classic game, or form a market and community to share ideas and sell new "Old School" materials. Each clone seems to take a slightly different take on the original rules, but they are mostly compatible with each other; and though there are dozens of them, a small handful (like Labyrinth Lord or Swords & Wizardry) seem to be predominant. ACKS, however, does something that other retro-clones for the most part haven't--provide rules to deal with strategic, high-level play: rather than have player power expand geometrically (like in later editions) until players are ready to punch out demigods in 2-3 combat rounds, individual power is capped between levels 10 and 14. Players then improve their status by expanding their dominion, either by building castles and raising armies, heading up their own underground thieves' guild, or building a laboratory to conduct research into higher-powered magic.

The book itself is a 270-page hardcover volume with an attractive, full-color exterior and black-and-white illustrations of varying quality inside. The basic rules cover all the stuff you've seen in RPGs before, especially D&D and its ilk: creating characters based on their ability scores, selecting character class and race, buying equipment and learning spells, and fighting monsters and evading traps. In this, there is little new. The special sauce is all in the castles and guild houses, and the henchmen you bring in to work there.

Players of later editions of D&D might be forgiven if they didn't find castle-keeping and empire-building to be very exciting: either the process of building construction was too obsessively detailed in original D&D, or there was no "connective tissue" between individual character play and boardgame level nation-building. But these kinds of adventures can be just as exciting as a dungeon delve, if only there were some streamlined rules to play.

This is where ACKS steps in. The game has rules that facilitate playing a leadership position, and rules that virtually require them. Acquiring higher level spells and creating magic items, for instance, require a magical laboratory, and research into new monsters requires one to have some kind of dungeon to house your experiments. (Which reminds me of this game I played before...) Likewise, there are rules governing the formation of your own Thieves' Guild, building a mercantile empire, founding a Temple, and aspirining to kingship. The rules deal with hiring and retaining NPCs, building costs, trade routes and prices, and experience rewards for successful endeavors. So, while low level characters behave much like they would in other D&D-style games (the "Adventurer" phase of life), middle and higher levels are devoted to more social and political aspects ("Conqueror" and "King").

For example, one section deals with mercantile adventures: the player determines where to buy goods cheaply and where to sell them at a markup, then sets up a route to transport them. Between the endpoints, human, natural, and supernatural calamities can endanger the merchandise, but if they succeed in shepherding them across the route, whatever profits they reap turn into XP bonuses. If this sounds like the classic "merchant hires you to ensure his goods arrive safely" scenario, that's because it is...but in this case, the player is the merchant, escorting his or her own caravan. Role-playing and adventure scenarios spring readily to mind from that starting point.

These "Campaign" rules are the major innovation in ACKS, and if it is your ambition to play in a setting where player characters have such domain-building ambitions, then there are few other places to find rules that support this style of play. ACKS is a well-thought out rules set for simulating the economic environment required for it. If that doesn't sound like High Adventure to you, then there is little else innovative in this game: other retro-clones, or the original rules themselves, will serve you just as well. But if you're interested in exploring economic, military, and political aspirations in an Old School style, but ACKS serves that need very, very well. Although this amounts to paying the $40 cover price for about 50-60 pages of truly new rules, in this case I felt it was worth it.

The game could easily be a supplementary text for another Old School retro-clone, which is why I'm not giving it five out of five stars; creating a whole new game seems like a bit of overkill to me; still, the book is a worthwhile effort overall, and if you want to try something for high-level play other than "the same as before, but bigger and louder", then I have no compunctions about recommending this book to you.

Great system!
By Chris Blauwkamp
This is an excellent product! A must buy if you are into the OSR in particular, or Dungeons and Dragons in general. ACKS features the streamlined gameplay of early additions, but with a lot of tweaking to make things run incredibly smoothly. The domain rules are a must-mention, and the product is worth it for those alone if you ever plan to have your players ruling a kingdom. But the entire system works together so well, it's a shame so many review just focus on that.

Great Game
By devin feagle
A great set of RPG rules, probably the best game I've seen in years. Very concise, fun, and thematic, a return to Old School role playing.

The Cause of All Nations: An International History of the American Civil War, by Don H. Doyle

When Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address in 1863, he had broader aims than simply rallying a war-weary nation. Lincoln realized that the Civil War had taken on a wider significance—that all of Europe and Latin America was watching to see whether the United States, a beleaguered model of democracy, would indeed “perish from the earth.”

In The Cause of All Nations, distinguished historian Don H. Doyle explains that the Civil War was viewed abroad as part of a much larger struggle for democracy that spanned the Atlantic Ocean, and had begun with the American and French Revolutions. While battles raged at Bull Run, Antietam, and Gettysburg, a parallel contest took place abroad, both in the marbled courts of power and in the public square. Foreign observers held widely divergent views on the war—from radicals such as Karl Marx and Giuseppe Garibaldi who called on the North to fight for liberty and equality, to aristocratic monarchists, who hoped that the collapse of the Union would strike a death blow against democratic movements on both sides of the Atlantic. Nowhere were these monarchist dreams more ominous than in Mexico, where Napoleon III sought to implement his Grand Design for a Latin Catholic empire that would thwart the spread of Anglo-Saxon democracy and use the Confederacy as a buffer state.

Hoping to capitalize on public sympathies abroad, both the Union and the Confederacy sent diplomats and special agents overseas: the South to seek recognition and support, and the North to keep European powers from interfering. Confederate agents appealed to those conservative elements who wanted the South to serve as a bulwark against radical egalitarianism. Lincoln and his Union agents overseas learned to appeal to many foreigners by embracing emancipation and casting the Union as the embattled defender of universal republican ideals, the “last best hope of earth.”

A bold account of the international dimensions of America's defining conflict, The Cause of All Nations frames the Civil War as a pivotal moment in a global struggle that would decide the survival of democracy.

Review
Bruce Levine, author of The Fall of the House of Dixie: The Civil War and the Social Revolution that Transformed the South
“At last! In a single judicious, skillfully constructed, and very well written volume, Don Doyle has given us a concise but panoramic view of the United States Civil War's impact on world history. We have needed such a book for a long time. It deserves a wide audience among scholars, teachers, students, and general readers alike.”

James M. McPherson, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era
“Offering new perspectives on the international dimensions of the American Civil War, Don Doyle portrays it as a world-changing conflict between liberalism and reaction. This eye-opening book leaves no doubt that Abraham Lincoln was right when he said that ‘the whole family of man' had a stake in the war's outcome.”

Kirkus Reviews Best Nonfiction of 2014

Economist
“An enlightening and compellingly written book.... More than any previous study, it tells the story of how America's civil war was perceived, debated and reacted to abroad, and how that reaction shaped the course of the war at home.”

Foreign Affairs
“Doyle's important book reveals why the war was more than a domestic quarrel; it was also a geopolitical event that shook the global balance of power.”

Wall Street Journal
"Mr. Doyle goes beyond conventional diplomatic history to shed much new light on what he calls history's first ‘deliberate, sustained, state-sponsored' campaign to shape foreign public opinion."

Chicago Tribune
“A lively and entertaining new history.... For Civil War buffs, reading the book is like arriving at your favorite restaurant from the street you never take; you know exactly where you are, but nothing looks quite the same from this angle…[Doyle] similarly succeeds in telling a story that is both familiar and wholly original.”

Society for U.S. Intellectual History
“[A] wonderfully informative and entertaining book…a finely wrought narrative, with a strong underpinning of intellectual history…It is Doyle's great achievement in The Cause of all Nations to remind us that the movement to end slavery in the United States was international in both scope and effect.”

Library Journal
“This fascinating work on the impact of the Civil War on the Atlantic world is an essential read for anyone interested in the conflict.”

Publishers Weekly
“Doyle lucidly contextualizes these dueling diplomatic missions within the larger machinations of European rulers.... A readable and refreshing perspective on a conflict too often understood through a purely domestic context.”

Kirkus, starred review
“Doyle…provides some novel insights about this most chronicled of conflicts.... An important—even necessary—addition to the groaning shelves of Civil War volumes.”

Daily Beast
“Well researched, evenly balanced.... Doyle's greatest asset, as both a historian and writer, is his ability to patiently tell this story with color, verve, and flair: while also weighing in with his own expertise and commentary at crucial periods of the narrative.”

Forbes.com
“Masterful.”

Times Literary Supplement
“A major contribution to the history of the American Civil War…A timely reminder of the benefits of looking outwards, to Europe and the world at large.”

Daily Beast
“Well researched, evenly balanced… Doyle's greatest asset, as both a historian and writer, is his ability to patiently tell this story with color, verve, and flair: while also weighing in with his own expertise and commentary at crucial periods of the narrative.”

History Today
“[A] tour de force [that] stunningly reconceives the American Civil War.”

Roanoke Times
“This is a significant book, coming forth in good time to put the spotlight on the Irrepressible Conflict's all-too-often unacknowledged root, and the dire consequences that grew therefrom.”

Civil War Book Review
“Doyle has written the definitive transnational account of the American Civil War and at the same time has given much food for thought to both American historians and historians of nineteenth-century Europe on a myriad of possibilities for further exploration of the connections and comparisons between the 1860s Old and New Worlds that he has highlighted in his book.”

America's Civil War
“Doyle makes a compelling case that the war can be viewed as a turning point in the global growth of democratic institutions.”

War on the Rocks blog
“What a great book!.... The Cause of All Nations is extensively well-researched, and is a useful history of both the American story and European states' international relations during this period… Above all, it sets the Civil War in its proper place in history, as a global affirmation of self-government and freedom. Anyone interested in the Civil War should have Doyle's book on his or her shelves.”

Civil War Memory
“An absolutely fascinating story.”

Military Heritage
“This work forcefully and effectively argues that the American Civil War had lasting importance not only for the United States, but also the wider world. Its points are made cogently, clearly, and with a sense of the international situation of the 1860s.”

Orville Vernon Burton, author of The Age of Lincoln
“Unlike any recent book on America's Civil War, Don Doyle's The Cause of All Nations breaks out of the familiar North vs. South framework to view the war, often through the eyes of foreigners, as an epic battle in a global contest over basic principles of liberty, equality, and self-government. In Doyle's telling, the quintessentially American story of ‘our Civil War' becomes an international conflict of arms and ideas, in which the future of slavery and democracy itself was at stake.”

Ted Widmer, editor of The New York Times: Disunion: Modern Historians Revisit and Reconsider the Civil War from Lincoln's Election to the Emancipation Proclamation
“Lincoln often claimed that American democracy meant much to the rest of the world. As this wonderful book shows, his forlorn hope turned out to be true. With precision and style, The Cause of All Nations reasserts the universal relevance of the Civil War.”

About the Author
Don H. Doyle is the McCausland Professor of History at the University of South Carolina. The author of several books, including Faulkner's County and Nations Divided, he lives in Columbia, South Carolina.

Enlightening
By Christian Schlect
The U.S. Civil War was more than battles, weapons, and generals. It was a symbolic contest that held the attention of many peoples and governments far from our shores. How England, France, Italy, and other states treated the matter was far from ordinary.

Professor Doyle does a nice job of describing the diplomacy of both North and South as the two sides fought for the attention and favor of rulers and those ruled, especially in Europe. And for those who are not aware of the importance of political events in Mexico during the period of our Civil War, Professor Doyle supplies quite useful information.

This book closes with a valuable reminder that the Statue of Liberty not only welcomes the downtrodden to our shores, but serves to "enlighten the
world" as to the hard-earned value of our once threatened, but continuing democracy.

How the Civil War Mattered to the World
By Reg Ankrom
The end of a Don H. Doyle book comes too soon. His latest work, The Cause of All Nations: An International History of the American Civil War," demonstrates that. The author of several histories, Doyle knows the nub of a good story and the arc of great history. One finishes a Doyle book satisfied that Doyle has achieved his purpose but somber, too, because there is no more.

The Cause of All Nations describes how foreign leaders and peoples were engaged in the American Civil War, largely by the strength of perceptions overseas about its reason. The book details how confused foreigners were initially about the war's purpose. Promised a leading military role if he would join the North's fight, Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi asked whether it was "'like any civil war,' just another internecine conflict over territory and sovereignty.'" (26) The question, which reverberated in palaces, guild halls, and serf's kitchens around the world, exposed what appeared to Europeans to be a lack of moral purpose in the U.S. conflict. In his inaugural address, President Lincoln linked its cause to the illegality of disunion and declared he had no constitutional authority to interfere with slavery. Yet, wondered Europeans, how could it be a war for constitutional principle without being a war to end slavery? Northern diplomats like Carl Schurz were quick to recognize the dilemma and advise Secretary of State William Seward that the "union was forfeiting its most appealing moral assets" in European public opinion by not focusing more on "a great humanitarian principle." (69)

Monarchies and much of the world's aristocracies despised American democracy and thrilled to Northern challenges and missteps. Cause conveys how Queen Victoria and British Prime Minister Palmerston, France's Napoleon III, Spain's Queen Isabella, and Pope Pius IX were happy to see conflict in the only nation on earth where people ruled themselves. "Every friend of despotism rejoices at your misfortune," wrote London Times correspondent William Howard Russell. (85) Doyle includes the quotation in one of the apt epigraphs with which he begins each chapter.

The great contribution The Cause of All Nations makes is that it gives us the voices of Europe's peoples. Doyle teaches us they had little interest in secession or the threat to manufacturing in the loss of Southern cotton. Their concern was over "the greatest moral issue of the nineteenth century: slavery." They would not ignore the declaration by Confederacy Vice President Alexander Stephens that slavery was the cornerstone of the South. This was more than a threat to America. Europeans saw it as a threat to every person around the world. French Count Agenor de Gasparin, who renounced his allegiance to Napoleon and exiled himself to Switzerland, declared, "One of the gravest conflicts of the age is opening in America." And he summoned all Europeans to the cause: "Let us enlist." (134)
Enlist they did. Doyle reports that "immigrants and sons of immigrants constituted well over 40 percent of the Union's armed forces." (159) They fought here not just for America, Doyle writes, but "for principles of liberty, equality, or democracy that transcended any particular nation." (160) We hear the voices:

". . .You can well imagine, dear mother, I support the cause of freedom with all my might," wrote German immigrant and Union soldier Friederich Martens.

". . .You never were in slavery, but we were born in it," said an immigrant mother from Germany to explain why her 17-year-old immigrant son had joined he Union army.

`It "should seem very strange that I should volunteerly joine in the bloody strife of the battlefield," wrote Ireland-born Peter Welsh, who had brought his wife to New York City from Canada. "Here thousands of sons and daughters of Irland have come to seek a refuge from tyranny and persecution at home . . . . America is Irland's refuge Irlands last hope." Doyle tells us that Welsh re-enlisted in January 1864 and died of wounds at Spotsylvania later that year.

Seward took advantage of this universal sense of patriotism with Circular 19, which joined to the Homestead Act and an offer of virtually free land to immigrants. And thousands came. (178) Doyle writes that the circular's success took political pressure off Lincoln because foreign enlistments offset the need to call on native-born Americans for armed service. (181)

Doyle takes a lengthy look at Southern approaches to foreign policy aimed at winning the battle of ideas abroad. While diplomats appeared capable enough, slavery continued to be the stumbling block to foreign alliances. Because the Confederacy now owned much of the French territory in the United States, France seemed the most likely friend. And Doyle dug out Napoleon's confidential comment to Southern Commissioner John Slidell that he personally favored the South in the war. Reaction overseas to the North's errors in the Trent Affair, the British allowance for the construction of six warships for the South, and other incidents gave hope to Southern diplomats that they could win the favor of European courts.

Lincoln's action on January 1, 1863, dashed those hopes. Enthusiasm for Northern principles swelled overseas with Lincoln's signature of the Emancipation Proclamation. Even British supporters of the South began to say that emancipation was the proper course for the South. (249) By the end of the year, Southern leaders concluded, "We have no friends in this world." (253) With Lincoln's re-election in 1864, Jefferson Davis and Secretary of State Judah Benjamin see the South's only recourse is to "sacrifice slavery for independence." (272)

It would not be enough. Europeans had seen the universal importance of this conflict, and Doyle writes French Professor Edouard Laboulaye's account of it:

"The world is a solidarity, and the cause of America is the cause of Liberty. . . . So long as there shall be across the Atlantic a society . . . of men, living happily and peacefully under a government of their choice, with laws made by themselves, liberty will cast her rays over Europe like an illuminating pharos. But should liberty become eclipsed in the new world, it would become night in Europe. . . ." (284)

Engrossing history
By Robert W. Brandstatter
You would think historians have covered every possible angle of Civil War history, but this book has to be outstandingly original. I have never read anything in depth like this regarding international reaction to the Civil War and its relationship to European history. I always had the impression that Europe just sat on the sidelines watching. This book points out all the diplomatic intrigue between North, South, and Europe as well as the domestic intrigue and democracy issues within England, France, Spain, Mexico, and even the Vatican. I was afraid it would be heavy reading, but it flowed along like a great novel or detective story with all its moves and countermoves even though you know the ending. Great mix of world history over a thirty year or so period with so many interesting nuggets. Never knew of Karl Marx's relationship to the Civil War. Highly recommended.
