Muscle Men and More

Very, very much into muscle worship, and if you're into that sort of thing (which I am) you will find Sean Reid Schott's descriptions very hot. I haven't read all the stories yet, but 'David in Austin' is very well done and very hot. 'David Conquers All' could have been the title and I find the concept very erotic. Recommended if you like stories of gay muscle men.

For readers who enjoy muscle-worship, this anthology will give you pleasurable reading. I especially enjoyed Camo Hat and David in Austin. The stories are primarily narratives, but they are very cleverly written -- enough to make me chuckle a number of times. Sean Reid Scott's fans should be aware of the forward which states that these were some of his earlier works that were published on the web. Well worth the few bucks!

Bringing God's message to life

The Bible is the most analyzed and written-about piece of literature every produced. And of course, that is because it is so much more to many people. What is often lacking, however, is practical guidance for applying its teachings in today's hectic world.
Leonard Felder manages to succeed where others rarely have. This book begins by acknowledging that most people, even religious followers, see the Ten Commandments as an archaic set of demands and implied threats forced down on a cowering people. Over the centuries, the interpretation of the Commandments has been so narrowed as to minimize their usefullness and application. Felder, prefering to refer to these as the "Ten Challenges," uses imagination and years of research to offer a practical and expanded interpretation that will help enrich one's life.
I highly recommend this book to anyone, believers and non-believers alike, who are looking for greater meaning in life. This is a great place to start!

Self help to succeed at obeying the Ten Commandments.

I am not usually thrilled with self-help books, but I bought this one. I think it was a wise purchase. It provides psychological reasons for keeping the Ten Commandments as they are written in Exodus. It gives reasons designed to motivate compliance. The Ten Challenges also provided a slant on the meaning of the words that is not available outside of Classical Hebrew. As with most all self-help books, it is meant to be read and reread, over and over again.

Back to the basics

There are three good reasons to read Karl Lofmark's "What is the Bible?" even if you are indifferent to religion in general and to Judaism and Christianity in particular.

First, the response of infidels to the political challenge of Islam necessarily requires an engagement with the Muslim scriptures. Few or no infidels will accept the claims to divine inspiration of the Koran, but fair dealing then requires an equally skeptical look at the Bible.

Second, there is a significant element in American politics that bases its claims on the divinity and supremacy of the Bible. This is associated most explicitly with the Dominionists who have colonized the rightmost wing of the Republican Party and (to the extent that it is unconnected with the Republicans) the Tea Party, but it is an undercurrent of a wider political consciousness. It is likely that this sentiment, like salafist interpretations of Islam, is incompatible with a functioning democracy.

Third, a larger and larger fraction of Americans have little to no direct exposure to the Bible, either because they belong to traditions that don't read the Bible, or because even though nominally Christian they belong to homogenized and pasteurized sects that pay little or no attention to what until recently were considered basic doctrines, like eternal punishment or the Resurrection. Though raised in a Bible-suffused western culture, their secondhand impressions of what the Bible is may be very far from what`s really in there.

I would also contend that almost all Bible-believing Christians who do think they know what is in the Bible do not really. It is nearly impossible to approach the Bible the way I long ago approached the Mahabharata. In college I spent some time in the hospital. My dormitory roommate, who was from India, kindly lent me his copy of the Mahabharata, which is what he turned to for comfort in times of trouble. I started reading it without any preconceptions, which is the way Lofmark wishes us to approach the Bible. This requires a real effort, and in my experience for many American Christians is impossible, given the saturation of a certain view they had imposed on them from their earliest age.

Lofmark calls himself a rationalist, not the happiest name for what he is, which is a freethinker. Not all freethinkers are rationalists, but it is fair to say that Lofmark is. He gets in the face of the Fundamentalists from the start: "When you read the Bible, you will find it full of things which are very hard to believe," not to mention impossible to reconcile with contradictory passages in other parts of the Bible.

The early chapters deal with who wrote the books of the Bible, where, when and in which languages. Not a line of what the Fundamentalists call the "original autographs" survives, which sounds like surprising carelessness in handling divine gifts, but -- although Lofmark doesn't mention it -- original autographs of any ancient texts are scarce. Almost everything we have is from copies, in the case of the Bible books, rather remote copies from the originals.

Lofmark does make the excellent point that there is a mass of texts written in the same place, time and language as the Bible, on the same subjects, that were early judged not to be divine. This little book is too short to go into it, but the hint that the selection was either arbitrary or partisan or both is well founded.

The argument about what is divine has not stopped. "The Five Gospels" by the Jesus Seminar attempts to determine (by a sort of audience applause meter) which statements by Jesus are authentic. (My own view is, none of them, since I do not believe any individual Jesus is the subject of the New Testament stories, which are more likely to be a collection of current tall tales, any more than an individual Paul Bunyan performed miracles in the northwoods that were related by his admirers some time later. (If I am right, then the best the Jesus Seminar -- which comprises a large proportion of professional American biblologists -- can manage is to tease out one thread from among the various kinds of tall tales that were current. It is useful to think of the 1920s, not nearly so remote from us as Jesus, if he was real, was from the writers of the Jesus stories, and how all the famous stories from then attach themselves to either Dorothy Parker or Will Rogers. Anyhow, the Jesus seminarians are no more able to agree than American Idol judges.)

Lofmark comments that, "Paul appears to know nothing about the life of Jesus as told in the gospels," which is the sort of obvious truth that you are not likely to hear from a preacher.

He has a sense of humor, saying of Revelations that it is "so obscure and mysterious that it might be reasonable to call it anything by a revelation." It would also be a feat of heroic reverse engineering to determine what criteria were used by the bishops and scholars who settled which books really were divine that could encompass both Revelations and Matthew.

For people who know little about the Bible and are curious about it, the first half of "What Is the Bible?" will provide a handy, compact answer to the superficial questions about this book -- rather as if one wanted to know the background of the Koran and turned to the humanist Ibn Warraq's "The Origins of the Koran." The second half of the book is a defense of humanism against Christianity. The chapter title, "Does the Bible teach moral truth?" gives a flavor of that, and by now it will be no surprise to learn that Lofmark's short answer is, no.

a useable past

In an interview conducted before he wrote this book, Miller said, "I think memoirs, autobiography...can help to translate chaos into something that is a useable past. Give an image where there was only a blur." He suggests the kind of autobiography he would be interested in writing would be more about the time he was living rather than his life, so a reader would "come away from it somehow a little heavier than he went into it." In all of this, TIMEBENDS succeeds wonderfully. I learned a great deal more about the textures, realities and signficance of the 1930s, 40s and 50s through his observations and images than through any linear professional histories. A bonus for those who enjoy seeing and reading Miller's plays is his deliberate selection of significant events and people in his life that show up in the plays in one way or another. And he does have great stories and observations about famous people--Olivier, Clark Gable, etc.-- that are the more conventional pleasures of show biz autobios. Even if he wasn't among the most important American dramatists of our time--perhaps the most important--this book would be a significant literary accomplishment. Miller is a careful writer, so readers perhaps unused to tact and understatement in memoirs are advised to look beyond their expectations to what he actually says. Yet his chapters on Marilyn Monroe were vivid and gave me more of an impression of her as a person than anything else I've read. Miller's voice brings all of this varied material together, and so the reader might approach this book as if listening to a great storyteller. This is a book full of heart, humor, wisdom and perspectives not found elsewhere. It is a treasure and a gift.

This will bend your mind if you've got the time!

This autobiography, written by Miller at age 72, strikes the reader immediately with his wonderful writing style. He does not march year by year through his life but bobs and weaves subtly bending time with his abundant dramatic talent. It is a pleasure to read. But so much in his life! It does go on and on. It is a book for leisure, not speed, reading. He brings to live the Depression Age, insight into our real life in World War II, the ugliness of the House un-American Activities Committee and McCarthyism (he was convicted of contempt for Congress for refusal to name names though the conviction was later overturned upon appeal), and of course he writes on his successes of his plays All My Sons, Death of a Salesman, the Crucible and of many others as well as his failures. All this with Marilyn Monroe yet to come! He seems continually embroiled in injustice and wrenching emotional turmoil. With his third wife, in his 40s, he gets his emotional life together but still pursues freedom for writers as a president of PEN. Miller, now 85, still writes and has recently published 60 years of collected essays entitled as Echoes Down the Corridor. Some of the material covers the events covered in TimeBends, but TimeBends is much more interesting.

A long haul very illuminating at times

This is a very detailed autobiography. I think the very best parts of it relate to the period of Miller's life when he was a young and eager playwright. The whole story of the first stagings of ' Death of a Salesman'is a truly fascinating one. One of the major problems of the work for me however was that Miller could supply tremendous detail and also insight about people without really probing inwardly very deeply . I also believe he held back a lot of punches, a lot of bitter truth in writing about people closest to him.

A great playwright it turns out may be a very good, but not a great autobiographer.

A winner from a true caricature artist and teacher

Wish I would have had this book first. I purchased another book years ago on drawing caricatures and failed miserably. I gave up and have not tried to draw this style again, until now. My art style has always been realism, drawing portraits, animals and still life. It is very hard for me to loosen up and drawing something that is not exact in the way it's "supposed" to be. I've recently become very interested in illustration and am trying to learn a totally different style. Of all the books I have purchased recently to help me on my new journey, I have to say this one has really been a fantastic tool! The teaching style is very interesting. The topic is pretty well covered with some definite good advice for the beginning caricature artists. This guy has taught the art of caricature drawing and you can certainly tell from this book.

Great for its catagory

This book is intended to train you how to do quick 3 minute caricatures. It's not intended to train you how to do some of the great caricatures that the top pros do by maybe doing a few thumb nail sketches and more analysis to make some of the best caricatures ever made. Some of the low rating on this book I think are caused by people who don't understand the various categories of caricature art. I'm a scribbler 'sketchy' type artist who wants to improve to a 'strong hand' first try kind of caricaturist. All of the categories have their place. I can work things out with a light pencil and then ink over my work, but I lack the ability to do one of these dash off quickly types of caricatures. This book is great training for this approach. Trust the system. On page 22 is the basic system which is the core of the book. At first you repeat the system not worrying about a likeness. It's all about process and speed. Do a three minute marker drawing 10 times a day. This book is all about the 3 minute drawing. It works.
Update: I have found some of Hamernik's videos on line going over the chapters of this book. Do a search of Hamernik videos. They are on Vimeo. They are helpful to look at, especially videos 3 through 5 where he does some demos using a marker. I find it better to see such videos as you can see very clearly the process he uses and the hand positions and tempo. You often miss stuff like that with digital vids as all you see is a cursor moving around. There is maybe a little more of a performance aspect to this kind of drawing as you're trying to do it all with direct strokes in one shot.

Excellent Guide to Caricatures

I've always loved drawing faces, but I often got frustrated because I would only occasionally get a quick sketch that I liked. My goal was to learn how to draw a face quickly that is recognizably the person I'm looking at...this book does a fantastic job of doing just that. Simply put: if you want a method to draw faces quickly then this is your book! I have to admit the kind of markers you use will dramatically determine the speed you draw with too. I recommend buying a bunch of different markers and finding the one that works for you. I have the kindle book on my iPhone...love it. The images ported over well. I have no complaints. Just buy the book and start drawing!
