About the Author
D. Corydon Hammond, Ph.D., ABPH, is past president and a fellow of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH), which honored him with a Presidential Award of Merit in 1989. He also received the ASCH Irving I. Secter Award in 1990 and the Thomas P. Wall Award for Excellence in Teaching of Clinical Hypnosis in 1994. He is Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Co-director of the Sex and Marital Therapy Clinic at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He has written six books, including the Handbook of Hypnotic Suggestions and Metaphors. He coordinated a national task force on hypnosis and memory and is the primary author of Clinical Hypnosis and Memory: Guidelines for Clinicians and for Forensic Hypnosis and of ASCH's Standards of Training in Clinical Hypnosis.

Good as a Secondary Resource

The Handbook of Hypnotic Suggestions and Metaphors seems to be on the shelves of many aspiring and accomplished hypnotherapists. I have read almost all of it, utilized some of the methods, and have spoken with many hypnotherapists who have read and used it. The general consensus is that the book provides some good ideas, some very good ideas, some mediocre ideas and a few worthless ones. I have certainly expanded my methods from using it. For people who already know hypnosis, this book is useful as an adjunct. I provides many approaches and scripts, but I have found that all need to be adapted based on the client, the hypnotherapist and the context. This means you need to know how to adapt them, and this "how" is beyond the scope of the Handbook. However, the Handbook does not promise to teach people how to modify scripts and methods, so that is not a shortcoming of the book. If someone wants to know more about the art of hypnosis and how to adapt various materials, you need to read a book or take a class which is specifically about that.

The biggest strength of the Handbook is that it provides a large amount of material and covers many types of application. The biggest weakness is that several of the scripts include language that violates some of the rules of suggestion. For example, there are several suggestions that are given in the negative, such as "do not think of orange..." This kind of mistake is only a problem for people who have limited training in hypnosis. People with proper training read these mistakes, note them and correct the script. People with limited hypnosis training do not recognize many of the mistakes and will use scripts with mistakes. I suspect that such mistakes occur because many of the chapters were written a long time ago and/or because the authors trained differently. While the Handbook has some shortcomings, they probably do not cause many problems because many people will still benefit from scripts which are imperfect. Hypnosis is a powerful approach and most of the time it takes more than a few "nots" to mess a session up.

The Handbook is a good secondary resource for approaches to and scripts for hypnosis. Most people I know refer to the Handbook when they working with a new type of problem (e.g. bed wetting) in order to get some general ideas about how to work with the problem. So, as a secondary reference, it gets FOUR STARS. I give only THREE STARS over all because I think too many people rely on it as a primary source of information, rather than as an ancillary reference.

Essential text for the hypnotherapist

Corey Hammond has artfully combined the works of skilled hypnotherapists into a comprehensive text which details the many uses and techniques of hypnotherapy. Fondly called by myself and my colleagues, "The Big Red Book", it remains one of the few texts I refer to on a daily basis. It stimulates my own creativity as a clinician and provides thought-provoking and incredibly useful solutions to difficult clinical problems. I recommend this work highly.

A Book for Lovers of the Power of Language

Yoko Ogawa's "The Housekeeper and the Professor" is the sort of novel publishers release for sheer love of books. It's unlikely to be made into a blockbuster film, it admits no franchise possibility, it has no fist fights or car chases. But it's the kind of book that makes me want to read, and it will enjoy the loyalty of anyone who reads because the word is a joy in itself.

Ogawa creates a world remarkably free of names. The first-person narrator is called only "I," and she keeps house for an invalid genius she only terms "the Professor." These two form a non-traditional family with the Housekeeper's son, nicknamed Root, in "a small city on the Inland Sea." The only proper nouns are prominent mathematicians and Japanese baseball heroes.

In this regard, the novel recalls Expressionistic plays of the early Twentieth Century, peopled by characters with names like "Boss," "Stranger," and "Woman #4." Or perhaps it's more like Aesop's fables. But it clearly signals that these characters relate according to their responsibilities, not their identities.

The Housekeeper and her son build a bond with the Professor based on loyalty and his love of teaching. Their every accomplishment brings effusive praise from the old man they're actually caring for. But the trick is that the Professor has a head injury that has scrambled his limbic system. Nothing entering his head leaves a mark lasting longer than eighty minutes.

The Professor needs someone to care for, while the Housekeeper and Root long for a man in their lives to complete their troubled family. The Professor's yin finds the Housekeeper's yang. Root and the Housekeeper are inspired to be better people by the Professor, and seek after his praise, even knowing as they do that in eighty minutes he won't even remember.

Math, for the Professor, is not a drab science; it's a work of art and a mode of prayer. And it is this love of beauty and spirituality that inspires the Housekeeper and Root. Math is a tool that brings them together as a family and motivates them to reach for something higher.

The story is cerebral and episodic, in the style of many Japanese art novels. It doesn't burst like a string of dynamite. Readers weaned on the cinematic style of paperback American fiction will seek in this novel for sturm und drang which never arrives. But lovers of the magic of language will find this a refreshing rest from breathless American pop fiction.

This novel has a self-selecting audience made up of those who truly love when the magic of words changes the way we look at our world. Stunning, punchy, smart and touching. A book that reminds readers that we read for a reason.

Subtle and Beautiful

Yoko Ogawa's quiet and insightful story, The Housekeeper and The Professor surprised me in several ways. For starters, I found myself transfixed by a story that relies heavily on two things I normally can't stand: math and baseball. These two subjects serve as metaphors in Ogawa's touching story about a young housekeeper, her memory-impaired professor client, and her 10-year-old son. Far from being cheap literary devices, mathematics - and to a smaller extent, baseball - form the basis of a strong bond between the three principal characters. All three are outcasts in their own way, and each possess some level of naive purity of character, which makes their ultimate friendship all the more touching. They are an unlikely trio, however the relationship that grows between them is as close as any family bond could ever be.

I also didn't expect this little book to be so inspiring and influential. The Housekeeper and the Professor is a haunting, beautifully written tale that will cause the reader to consider what constitutes family and what life's obligations entail. Ogawa's portrayal of the professor is particularly moving. Injured in a car accident in the early 1970s, he has only 80 minutes of short-term memory and must re-learn relationships and basic information on a continual basis. A brilliant mathematician, he uses math as a primary means of communication - he is most comfortable when talking about numbers and has a gift for making the complex seem simple. While lacking in memory, he has a natural and instinctual affinity for children, and bonds instantly with the housekeeper's son. The boy's presence helps to bring the professor out of his insular world - in fact the child is the only thing that the professor seems to care about beside his beloved prime numbers. The two bond over math, and later baseball, and their relationships nurtures and enriches both of their lives, as well as that of the housekeeper.

Ogawa's mastery at creating deep, multi-dimensional characters is all the more fascinating in this story because the reader never actually learns the subject's names (save for a curious nickname given to the boy by the professor). The reader is able to easily get to know the characters and feel empathy for them without knowing their names. The story transcends the need for names - in fact, I didn't notice the lack of given names until I was halfway through the book. Rather than focuses on something as mundane as a name, Ogawa chooses to give her readers a glimpse of her character's psyches. She wants us to ponder why people they act as they do, what motivates their actions and decisions, and to wonder why certain events happen. Ogawa's writing style is subtle, elegant and multidimensional. The story transcends time and geography and is applicable to just about everyone.

The Housekeeper and the Professor is a lovely, intriguing rendering of human relations and emotion that possess a calm dignity. Ogawa, who is well-known in her native Japan, has a gift for subtlety and an understanding of human psychology that allows her to build realistic, full-bodied characters who strike a chord with readers. I wasn't expecting to like this book - but its beauty and compassion won me over despite my fear of math and loathing of baseball.

A Very Complex Simple Story

The trouble with writing a review of this book is that I have just finished reading it but I am certainly not finished thinking about it. The Professor suffered a brain injury which limits his short term memory to 80 minutes. His long term memories end on the day of the auto accident. The Professor thinks nearly exclusively about number theory, the rarely practical, elegant study of numbers themselves and their relationship with one another. The Housekeeper begins as a young mother merely trying to survive and raise her son with dignity. The story, on the surface, is the improbable family that arises, the odd but intense bond that grows between the three. The Professor's emotions are childlike and his love of children is intense. That present, immediate love showers over the Housekeeper's son, called "Root" by the Professor, helps the boy to grow and teaches the Housekeeper how to better love her child. Root and the Professor love baseball even if the team they root for are from different eras, and they form a bond that the lack of common memory cannot impair. The Housekeeper becomes fascinated by the elegance of numbers and by baseball. She is a better mother and a fuller person as a result of both. The characters are changed over time--except perhaps the professor: how can you change if you have no memory?

Like most books by Asian authors I have read, the language and story is beautifully spare, clear and relies on inference. Yoko Ogawa, and her translator, leave a lot of room for readers to reach their own conclusions (how can the Professor's love for the child be personal if he cannot remember the person?) There is discussion of theorems and formulas, with the proofs shown on the page. I am not drawn to number theory but the same spare elegance of the numbers inform the story. The rarity of prime numbers in really big numbers suggests the rarity of perfect moments in the course of a long life. Perhaps the joy of discovering a large prime is analogous to the joy of the rare but perfect moments of our lives. Perhaps I'm full of it, too. But because of what is not said, the reflective reader finds herself staring into the distance, thinking about the book (imagine being a child greeted with new joy and respect daily? What does that do for a child?). The Housekeeper and the Professor invites the reader to become engaged in a broader way than is possible in merely telling a tale.

Another reviewer said this is the sort of book published for the love of good writing and that is not likely to be made into a made for TV movie, and he's right. Its 180 pages goes by very quickly unless you pause to think through some of the formulas as math (I did not)rather than as literature (I did). How can formulas be literature? It's that kind of book, perhaps taking you where you have not been before and blending the authors thoughts with your own. Other readers will ask different questions as a result of reading it. It is very hard to ask more of a book than that.

I loved the book and will read it again. I imagine this book will probably not find a broad audience, but its readership will be devout.

This Book is Definitely One-Up!

This is a work of genius. It deserves to be on everyone's top-ten list.

This volume is a collection of all Potter's individual works on the subject of Gamesmanship, One-Upmanship, and Lifemanship. If you can't find this one compendium, go out and beg, borrow, or steal any of the individual books you can lay your hands on. You will laugh uproariously. But you will also learn to recognize the literal, nasty little games people play, and if you are of a mind, you will be instructed in how to play the games yourself.

I've always been rather annoyed when I find an entry in a Match Making column from someone looking for a mate who "Doesn't play games." I've never quite known what that means. It seems to be some generalized, rote admonition against people who don't return phone calls, or something like that. But if the games mentioned in singles columns refer to just the plain meat-and-potatoes sort of maneuvers - here with Stephen Potter you will find a voluptuous smorgasbord of suggested games. You will find ploys of breathtaking diversity and subtlety.

As Potter introduces his subject, the key to being one-up in any social setting is to break the flow of other people's conversation. Put an end to any social momentum they may be building. Throw them off their game. The classic Potter squelch (one which is also illustrated in the movie based on Potter's writings, School for Scoundrels) involves offsetting any success someone at a party may have had by telling a joke. Say someone just scored a big laugh by telling a joke involving a man with one leg. You laugh heartily right along with the others. Then get up off your chair and limp painfully toward the bathroom, mumbling something about a "danged old piece of shrapnel." All the social credit the joke-teller built in the course of the evening will immediately plummet. He and all his appreciative listeners will be made to feel apologetic and guilty and will be effectively silenced.

Not all of Potter's ploys involve directly diminishing someone else though. Some ploys enable you to bolster your own social credit without regard to what others around you are doing. For example, Potter gives a tip on how to be popular with children, an important skill if you are courting a single parent or trying to impress your boss at a party. Potter states that you must talk in a perfectly natural, adult way to the child. Talk to him just as you would talk to one of your golfing partners. You might express concern over your stock portfolio. Confide your fear that pork bellies and crude oil are going down, liable to leave you in a pretty pickle. The toddler may not know what you are saying, but will be fascinated by the strange phrases, and will appreciate your talking to him like an equal. And you will be in like Flynn with the child's parents.

One final example of Potter's brilliant social observation - and then you really must read the book yourself. Potter tells how to always appear to be the youngest, "coolest" person in the room, even if you are well into your nineties and on death's door. Older people assume they must burst onto a party scene with as much upright vigor and energy as they can muster. Do JUST THE OPPOSITE, Potter instructs. Instead, you must appear to be infinitely weary, weary in body and spirit. Don't stand up straight. Slouch against every upright you find. When you come through a doorway, lean for long minutes against the doorframe before proceeding into the room. I imagine if you can effect a long, liquid disaffected slump, like the iconic poster of James Dean - you will have the image of youth down pat. Then as a clinching fillip, Potter advises you to head for a sofa and recline on it. But - the difference between a 99-year-old invalid waning on a couch and a young man stretched disaffectedly there - lies in a small postural detail. When you collapse down on the couch, fling one leg over the back of it. And there you have it - an eternally insouciant young man. No plastic surgery, dieting, or exercise required.

Potter gives page after page of such slaying advice. And he gives the reader the machinations of such expert Lifemen as Gattling-Fenn and Odoreida to follow as example. The Dickensian, oddly apposite names of these (fictional?) characters alone is enough to make them memorable and make you laugh.

But couched in all the laughs you'll get from this book, you will discover a whole coherent psychology of behavior. It preceded the more heavy-handed best-seller Games People Play, and easily presents a more telling interpretation of human motivation than Freud. This truly is a master work.

British humor, very, very British. If you *don't* like losing, develop the skills needed so that you always win. In any social situation a definite hierarchy develops. Potter's work can be considered a manual for anyone seeking to become the top dog. This volume contains four books previously published separately: Gamesmanship, Lifemanship, One-upmanship, and Supermanship. Potter's own work in the field of becoming one-up on one's fellow man is supplemented by the researches of others in various fields: the carmanship of Godfrey Plaste; the art of not rock-climbing of G. Odoreida; the clubmanship of Hugo Coating; and the many contributions of Gattling-Fenn. Recommended reading for anyone wishing to make Machiavelli gasp in admiration . . .

Handbooks For Life

These are the four funniest books I have ever read. And yet, the basic concepts and strategies set forth are exactly what's needed to reign supreme in all situations social and competitive. Many times over the years I have employed some variaton of a Potter "opening" or gambit, often with better results than I had even hoped. Just as many times, I've realized (too late), that I have missed a golden opportunity, or worse, have been "one-upped" myself.

made me love biochemistry

throughout my stay in med school, I never understood why I must be subjected to all those biochemical details. I was aware, of course, that I needed to understand the basic chemical processes that affected the human body, but I couldn't find any reason why my professors would treat medical students as if they were biochem majors. Boy, was I glad when the biochemistry class was over, and I passed the darn course!
I was to meet this same course a few years ago, when I had to sit for the USMLE I. Like a sick child who must swallow a bitter tablet, I reluctantly began to study biochem. Again.
It was a very pleasant surprise that the course was really interesting. I mean, I enjoyed it as much as I did physiology (and I always loved physiology!).
I realized that I came to love biochem because of this book. The authors knew how to give you solid biochemical reasons for those familiar clinical conditions. Contrary to my previous experiences in med school, I found out that biochemistry is indeed a very interesting vourse.
The only (small) problem that you may find with this book is, it could be too detailed at times. However, it covers the USMLE topics quite well. If you have read Kaplan's materials, you'd agree that there are very many similarities. I read both.
If you want to use it for the USMLE I exam, I suggest you first read the specific topics required for the exam. Afterwards, you may then the other areas that are not vital for the exam, if you are interested, and you have the extra time.
I wish I had this book much earlier. It's really nice.

Too great a misunderstanding

The author has some talent but the preponderance of mistakes and misunderstanding is too great for me to ignore. This book is best classified as juvenilia. Where or how it fits into ongoing discussions of feminism, antifeminism, pro porn and antiporn, gender relationships and identity, etc., I leave it to you to decide if you read this book.

Should you read this book? I think you can find interest and/or pleasure in reading it, as long as you are aware of a few problems.

Despite the number of times these stories have been edited, revised, and published there is at least one area that may harm the innocent or underinformed reader. Safe sex is lifesaving. In several stories, condoms appear and disappear in the same scene progression -- and of course the heroines sometimes scream for the male to achieve orgasm inside the female. The author simply forgets, through many iterations of publishing, that sex was safe in one paragraph and then unsafe in the next. Second, there are sexual positions or acts that absolutely require artificial lubricant -- no one from porn star to virgin doesn't require lubricant. If, as a few characters do in the stories --and I'm tempted to say all of them, but I may have lost count -- you attempt this act without plenty of lubricant, patience and communication, you will, not might, you WILL cause all sorts of bodily injury.

This is a book of fiction. Due to the frequent mistakes and misinformation, I am tempted to say that this is not an autobiographical account in the strictest sense. Do not try the depicted acts at home, not without a lot of supplemental sex education.

A parting thought or two from someone who is sympathetic to the need for a great deal more discussion about gender relationships with regard to sexual experiences. The author portrays many variations on the basic human dilemma of sex, all without stridently -- or otherwise -- claiming one or the other gender is at fault. Refusing to read this book completely and fairly may provide grist for your personal ideological windmill, but you do the author a great injustice ignoring her sometimes nuanced thought.

The biggest misconception about sex, and especially about gender identity and stereotypes, is that all people need to do 99.9 percent of the time is simply show up and sex will be either satisfying or not depending on irrelevant factors such as gender, experience, attitudes, enthusiasm, etc etc. Without working at communicating with one another, and being both honest and nonjudgmental, you might as well have stayed home, alone. Quantity of sexual experiences will not fill the void of dissatisfaction. Thinking you need a lot of sexual partners or even a great deal of sex within a day or week or whatever, is more to do with performance anxiety -- yes, among women too, all of you who like this author are extremely passive during sex, no matter how often she might initiate the process or scream or act aggressively.

Keep these things in mind as you read this very flawed but still interesting book. How might the characters or the author have been better off with a little reciprocity, giving as well as taking, kindness and generosity and respect for another -- and what the limitless potential might be if you worked as hard at reciprocating pleasure than merely showing up for someone else to slave away for your ideas about pleasure.

Rising Above Genre (for the most part)

In Little Cat, Tamara Faith Berger attempts, with a great deal of success, to take the genre of pornographic writing and blend or elevate it with elements of literary fiction.

When the two novellas in this collection (Lie With Me, and The Way of the Whore) are the most successful is not when the prose exhibits the pure mannerisms of pornography. Rather, it is when Berger takes the vast, strange, twisted and grand topic of human female sexuality and twists our view of it on its head, creating new angles, giving the reader fresh viewpoints and unusual, disturbing vistas of this all too human pursuit we think we know so well.

That is when these two book rises above the confines, demands and expectation of the genre. We get more than titillation. We get a writer exploring one of the most common of human pursuits in novel, odd, exciting ways.
