A Tale of Two Soldiers is a memoir about the unlikely friendship an American Jewish G.I. and trained sniper for the US Army, formed with a German Luftwaffe pilot during WWII.

On Dec. 18, 1944, twenty-one-year-old Max Gendelman was captured in the Battle of the Bulge, one of only a handful in his company to survive. Starving and dazed, his dog tags blown off, he was marched through German villages and eventually arrived at a farm the Reich had commandeered from a German family.

The family's grandson, Karl Kirschner, a lieutenant in the Luftwaffe conscripted against his will, was hiding out in one of the barns. To Max's astonishment one day Karl spoke to him through the fence; they discovered a shared passion for chess, and began to secretly meet to play the game.

As they got to know each other, they recognized what they needed to do; they formed a pact, a plan to escape together. This was the start of a friendship that would endure for more than six decades.

About the Author
A young Jewish G.I. taken prisoner in the Battle of the Bulge witnessed horrific images that left him shell-shocked. For sixty years Max Gendelman avoided painful memories by nurturing his family, business, and a lifelong friendship with the German Luftwaffe pilot who helped him escape. He received the Purple Heart and was named by the French Republic ''Chevalier of The Legion Of Honor.'' He died in June 2012, one month after he finished A Tale of Two Soldiers; he was buried with military honors.

Incredible Story. A Must Read

This book is a must read. I simply couldn't put it down. The first person narrative is very effective and captures the imagination of the reader right from the start. There is a freshness and almost naivety to the beginning chapters and an emotional clarity in describing war experiences and later events that suggest that while edited, this is not a ghost written text. The book is a testament to human resourcefulness and resilience in confronting and overcoming the kinds of extreme adversity during war that most of us can only contemplate in terms of worst nightmares. In my view, it is also a memoir about the universalism of the human spirit as reflected in the strong and permanent loving bond that was formed between two young men who technically were enemies. The book poignantly relates the family background of Max, a young Jewish American soldier, the horrendous World War II combat experiences he witnessed and endured during the Battle of the Bulge, his capture by the Germans and incarceration in a POW camp, and ultimate escape with the help of and together with Karl, a wounded Luftwaffe pilot. Max's leadership skills and ability to quickly size up a dangerous situation and respond accordingly are impressive to read about. The information about Karl's background and experiences adds a significant depth to the book and a good understanding of his reasons for wanting to escape Germany. The description, as related later to Max, of the family reaction when the telegram was received that Max was officially declared missing in action was emotionally overwhelming for me to read. The fact that Max and Karl remained close brothers for the rest of their lives and that their children and grandchildren also have been encircled in the strong bond of love and friendship between them was very touching as well.

About the Author

I am asking a lot of these questions, and found a lot of answers. However, they were all very general answers, directed more at helping you find the specific answers to your situation, which is good, but I am tired of thinking, I just want some real answers and specific directions as to what to do. Good starting point if you just found out about an affair.

I was tired of doormats...

I liked the book, especially the fact that the heroine, Brianne, wasn't a doormat like a lot of the "virginal young girls" that romance writers seem to like. She not only held her own but was several paces ahead of the hero! I also liked the fact that the hero, Pierce, wasn't a macho womanizer like those same writers are so fond of. You didn't get the feeling that he thought she was supposed to get down on her knees, eternally greatfull, that he paid the slightest attention to her. And I liked that he was faithfull - even if it was to his dead wife - he showed potential. And lived up to it!
But I especially like the fact that Ms. Palmer included characters from a previous book: "Tate Winthrop" and "Cecily." If I'm not mistaken, they were first introduced in "After Midnight" written under the name of "Susan Kyle." I was intrigued by the glimpses of these two and had wondered what happened to them. Too bad I have to wait until December for the release of "Paper Rose" for their full story!
I've always loved cross-over stories. Speaking of which, does anyone know if there was a book about Brianne's friend "Cara Harvey"? Since she was mentioned several times in this book, with references to her problems with a "gentleman," I was wondering if she had a separate story.

Storyline was Good, Characters Were Mediocre....

My first Palmer book and a little let down. The main characters were somewhat mediocre and flat, especially the hero Pierce. The heroine was much more interesting and I was finding myself hoping something would happen between her and the 'badguy' since he was much more interesting and exciting.
Pierce spent way too much of the book whining about his dead wife and how he can't love again, blah blah blah and I began to get irritated with the strong and fiesty heroine Brianne who kept waiting for the idiot to come around. He didn't deserve her waiting or love. His reasoning was so farfetched and unreal at times that I just shook my head and sighed. I was truly hoping Brianne would slap him a few times and take off with the secondary character Tate. Now HE was a man to wait for, he he he...subsequently he is also in the next book called 'Paper Rose', his story.
Pierce came off as whiny and weak and we were never really sure what he did with the oil business, it was too confusing. The secondary characters were great and I found myself hoping they would take over the story. CIA and other secret organizations played a big role in the plot along with foreign governments, ect. The plot was good and very developed, what was missing and left a big hole was the main characters. They seemed mismatched and misplaced in its complex web. I found myself enjoying the action going on around them and the movements of the secondary characters, even the badguys much more.
'Once in Paris' is a tale about two people who run into each other and fall in love, but neither will admit the mindblowing fact.
Pierce Hutton was too grief stricken and empty to realize there was life after his spouce's death. Coming to his rescue one night in the city, Brianne Martin, an 18 year old kid in school who seems to let him know without words that life can go on.
She was far too young for him and she knew he was too old for her, but their hearts didn't know the difference.
A year later, Brianne is caught in a web of political scandal and her stepfather is about to turn her over to a man who has no scrupples. He simply wants her and will have her at any cost. Never forgetting that night in Paris, Pierce comes to her rescue and leads them into an adventure she never dreamed filled with danger and chaos.
Can she heal his broken soul? Can he save her from a madman bent on destroying her?

Ok for a time filler....

I don't recall ever reading a Diana Palmer story before (I know she has a bunch of them) and I'm not sure I would read another. There was not much wrong with this book per se, but there was not much right with it either. The dialogue was very simple as was the plot. Don't scratch too hard at the surface of this story or you won't hit anything. We have a tortured hero, who truly loved his first wife, and it was refeshing to see that he was faithful in his love. He also had a guilty conscience about a woman who could have been his daughter (though that seemed to just be a front to keep our heroine at arm's length while he mourned his wife). Our heorine was young and impressionable (though at 19 I don't know anyone who is still that naive...today maybe 16) but she was just...well ...there. Everyone loved her and thought she was special, but besides being compassionate, I'm not sure I see all the allure.
Instead of using big print and huge margins, the editor or publisher should have just used normal typeset and published this as a 'series'. This 377 page book shouldn't have been longer that 250 pages.

Through this process, he has grown as a person, and he believes the college experience helped him discover his identity and true purpose. About the Author
A.E.Charles was born on May 11, 1992 in Atlanta, Georgia. He grew up in Stone Mountain which is a suburb 30 minutes outside of Atlanta. Since he was a child he loved creative writing and wrote many short stories. He started writing poetry in the 8th grade for a school project. When he started college at the University of West Georgia in 2010, he was inspired to write poetry again by listening to rappers like Drake, Wale, and J.Cole. As he began writing he came up with an idea to write a poetry book about his college experience. As a result of his efforts you have The Experience.

Great set of poems for everyday read

This book of poems was very inspirational and the author took a piece of his personal life experiences to bring everyday people a motivational drive to view others and themselves in a consciousness that will help you understand personal hardships and pressures to where you won't feel as defeated as you're facing them. It is over 100 poems each separated into different categories of inspiring such as (life, awareness as an individual in a market controlled world, spirituality, and personal happiness). If you need something to get you through your day as you're waiting to clock in for work, waiting in line at the bank, or simply looking for something inspiring to read without someone trying to convert you to their strong beliefs and plan that worked for them but doesn't have anything to really do with your situation, you will enjoy these poems.

Emotions Run Deep In This Book

This book is amazing. You are definitely guaranteed to experience every emotion by the end of the book. I like to read it on Sunday evenings or after a long, rough day. It makes me appreciate life, and be thankful for every experience I have. The author writes about love, God, respect, school, and other things we experience in life. I highly recommend this book.
