Jonathan Fenby is a former editor of the OBSERVER and of the SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST. He is the author of several books including the acclaimed ON THE BRINK: THE TROUBLE WITH FRANCE and GENERALISSIMO: CHIANG KAI-SHEK AND THE CHINA HE LOST. Will Become a Classic and is as Current as This Week's Economist

Traces the history of modern France from the end of Napoleon's reign to Francois Hollande in 2015 placing it in the context of the 1789 revolution and the variety of counter-revolutions. The history is an interesting mixture of French politics, surrounding world events, and French culture. This is a well researched book with extensive citations and an up to date list of references that treats the related literature fairly. For example, he writes that it took an American, Robert Paxton, to write a complete account of Vichy France.
Contains useful photographs of the relevant political characters in the story, but is missing helpful reference maps for one who does not have a map of France memorized. Is written in a way that makes the reader to keep moving forward to follow the developing dramatic story.

This should have been a wonderful read. An enthralling subject, an award-winning journalist, a top publisher and good reviews. It was absolutely dire – close to unreadable. Partly due to content, mainly to presentation.

“Telling history through its main political actors is not in fashion among historians; social movements and the tide of ideas are held to be more important”, writes the author. What does this actually mean in practice? The “main political actors” are the hundreds of men who held national political office in France. Very few women feature in this book – except as mistresses and courtesans.

The narrative is organized round elections and their victors. It is relentless, wearying and boring. Examples - in 1835 “the King installed a government under Gerard..before appointing the Duke of Bassano..who resigned…Mortier stepped in but resigned..finally de Broglie returned” , in 1932 “three governments came and went”, after 1969, “France has had six presidents and eighteen prime ministers”.

To distinguish one man, indeed one nonentity from another, the author appears to rely on the trivial and indeed bizarre, especially facial hair. One example of countless instances ”Paul Doumer..with an extraordinarily luxuriant white beard..was shot..succeeded by Albert Lebrun, who made do with a fine sweeping moustache”.

There are illustrations but no graphs or tables or maps to summarize economic and social change. There are no comparisons with other developing European states. A reasonable reader would wonder in vain how a nation that bestrode Europe from east to west in 1805 was wiped out in 6 weeks in 1940.

In each era sections are inserted on culture, science and the arts. Nothing convinced me that this is an area of the author’s expertise. Really we are just presented with lists – of painters, writers, actors, scientists. Again an example – “Jules Romains produced 27 volumes in his series..while martin du Gard’s cycle consisted of eight books and Proust’s of seven at 4000 pages and 2000 characters.” It was like travelling on the Metro in rush hour - as many people as possible packed into the account – distinguished only by where they got on and off and how impressive their beards were.

All this is compounded by a style of writing that makes text almost unreadable. Paragraphs, sections and chapters read like rough notes rather than completed and thoughtful prose. "Facts" are hurled randomly together. Example – this of 1919 “Four million people were estimated to have syphilis. Known abortions rose to 400,000. A surgeon, Serge Voronoff, attracted considerable attention with repeated – and repeatedly unsuccessful – attempts to transplant testicles from primates to men. Regions where the fighting had been concentrated were devastated. In Lille 80% of teenagers were underweight”.

Yes, the main topics are mentioned and reviewed, but not in any depth or with any freshness. Buried in all the trivia there is the occasional good anecdote, among the hundreds of quotations there are a few decisive barbs [mainly from the pen of Karl Marx].

I did finish this book on Kindle, but the last chapters I could bear only to skim.

I accept this is a very negative appraisal – which I have tried to justify in a few hundred words, but the examples cited provide an accurate picture of content. I thought this book was dreadful – not my idea of a history of modern France.

An enjoyable chick lit set in the Eternal City

I picked this up when I was looking for a light read and when I saw that it was set in Rome I knew I had to read it! The story is well paced if somewhate predictable, but with enough twists and turns to keep you on your toes. It includes gorgeous descriptions of the city as well as little known facts and hidden locations off the tourist trail which would be even more enjoyable if you were planning a trip to Rome. A great holiday read that leaves you wishing for some summer sun!

Forward is a therapist, author, and talk-show host whose specialty is abusive relationships. This book grew out of her realization that her own marriage as well as those of many of her clients followed a pattern. Many men need to control their relationships completely and consequently are mentally (if not physically) abusive. They denigrate their partners, resent them if they have any outside interests, and become furious for trivial reasons. Women with low self-esteem are drawn to these men because they can also be charming and devoted. Forward devotes the first half of the book to an analysis of the problem, the second half to breaking the pattern and getting outside help. Jaw dropping. Brings new perspective for sure.

My jaw dropped as I read my life on the pages of this book. While I didn't experience the extreme physical violence, the mental and emotional manipulation kept me crippled. The constant personal sacrifices left me wanting and hopeless. I will be recommending this book to every woman I come in contact with who expresses a similar life story with me. Because of what I learned from this book, I will not allow myself to be crippled again. Nobody will have that control over me again. You know, this might be an excellent pre-wedding gift to any woman you know, Just in case she is involved in this kind of relationship. If she is, she will recognize it in the pages of this book.
EASY READ. INFORMATION EXCELLENTLY PRESENTED.

Poor quality

Seller described item as "like new"; not even close. The pages are in fair condition, the cover is in poor condition. However, it is usable and I am satisfied with the delivery speed and price.

I was actually expecting it to be a low quality used book based on other reviews, so technically it met my expectations. So still a good buy, but wanted to reinforce it to others that the quality will be poor. If the description matched the product sent, I would have had no problem giving 4 or 5 stars.

Excellent Strategy Text

This is an excellent text. There are some errors, I suspect because it is the first printing of this edition. The author explains concepts that students confuse (like Key Success Factors) very well and puts Michael Porter's 5 Forces Model in context. Something few other textbooks bother to do so students tend to use it incorrectly. The cases and examples in the text are also useful.

Meaghan Morris, Australian Research Council Senior Fellow at University of Technology, Sydney, is the author of several works of feminist cultural theory, including The Pirate’s Fiancee: Feminism, Reading, Postmodernism and co-editor of Australian Cultural Studies: A Reader.

Cultural criticism at its global/local wry perverse best...

Meaghan Morris, early and late, writes cultural criticism at its global/local,wry perverse best. Lest this sound too late-capitalist cynical or rude, I should say that she writes from and as the local and national site of Australia, making this political and libidinal space of transnational cultural studies resonate with the most urgent, critical, and international issues that trouble our politics and poetics.
As such, she reinvents Asia/Pacific as she writes, showing us (or should I say the writerly obsessive "me") how to work and affiliate in a space of writing and moral-political concern. When I read her essays, I face the panic white sublimity of awe and admiration, clotted and displaced. She invents topics and tropes for each essay or book, reframing tourism, mass media, film, movement, embodied location, identity, without falling into the "banality of cultural studies" or the throwaway language and motel spaces that haunt our politics.
She is an untimely critic, whose writing is both too soon and too late for the market. But the "tyranny of space" in the Pacific has been overcome, and I for one am very grateful such an artist and cultural critic and scholar exists all packed into one person, Meaghan Morris.
