Across the ancient world it was known, a mysterious island at the center of a Mystery tradition so secret that even today, we have only clues about it. Ancient Greek myths, myths older than Greece, a mountain whose peak is often shrouded in clouds, and a pagan sanctuary so archaic it probably dates to when the island was part of a mainland. Join Arthur Versluis on a journey to Samothrace and beyond as he investigates archaic European symbolism, myth, and mysteries, and uncovers clues to the secret religious traditions of indigenous Europe.
This is an inspiring book, in which decades of scholarship are distilled into a personal testimony. Part travelogue, part Platonic meditation, it explains how the ancient Mysteries opened up conscious commerce with the gods, or, esoterically, with one’s own divinity. In his pilgrimage to the ruined sanctuary of Samothrace, Arthur Versluis discovers that its stones still carry a spiritual and even physical charge that can set the initiatic process in motion. The Greek island then stands for all the other sacred sites, in Europe and beyond, that lie ready to support a new marriage of heaven and earth within the individual.
—Joscelyn Godwin, Colgate University, author of The Golden Thread, Harmonies of Heaven and Earth, and many other books.
Dr. Arthur Versluis, one of the world's foremost esoteric scholars, takes us on a journey to the fabled Aegean isle of Samothrace, a center of the ancient Mysteries. This book is a travelogue, and not just in a physical sense - Dr. Versluis guides us on a journey through realms of myth and history to uncover the secrets of ancient Western spirituality. At journey's end, the author steers us home to who we really, deeply are.
—Leonard George, Capilano University, author of Crimes of Perception and Alternative Realities.
A timely and important book. The author has ventured into an almost abandoned corner of European hiero-history, a time when the gods of Greece still informed the collective life of a people long used to their vivifying presence. He is right to alert us to the risks that we run when we dismiss what they can tell us about the power of place as a templum housing the inner life of us all. Reading Entering the Mysteries is to enter the mystery itself.
—James Cowan, author of Messengers of the Gods and many other books

Interesting Template for Exploring Greek Mystery Traditions
By A Satisfied Customer
From the outset let me say that I am a fan of Arthur Versluis' work. Time and again he has synthesized large amounts of information and a large number of sources in works that make specialized and esoteric topics approachable. The current text follows that same impulse--ranging broadly in order to shed light on an esoteric topic.
On a less positive note, Versluis' publisher does him no favors in the Kindle version of this text (I have not examined the print version.). Numerous typos, misspellings, clearly mistaken wordings, and a lack of a proper and fully usable TOC mar the reading experience. Simply cleaning up the text in these basic ways would garner an additional star on my rating.
In summary, this is for me a four-star book presented in a two-star Kindle edition. A writer of Arthur Versluis' ability deserves much better.

A light-filled book
By Vidar
This richly inspiring book won me over even with its sub-title “The Secret Traditions of Indigenous Europe”. We are used to seeing the word “indigenous” applied to Australian Aborigines or Native Americans, but not to European peoples, except perhaps in a disparaging tone to refer to certain primitive populations who allegedly lived in a benighted state until civilisation arrived. Arthur Versluis’s book is a valuable corrective to this view. He writes that “it is vital that modern Europeans and those of European descent begin to recall their ancient origins and purpose once again, begin to recognize what extraordinary riches are ours”. These riches include the ancient sacred places of Europe, windows on to enchantment, where one can still sense the presence of the old gods, despite centuries of neglect and vandalism. The author takes us on a journey into the spiritual world view that created those sites. Starting point of the journey is the Greek island of Samothrace, one of the most potent sacred sites of the ancient world, with its Arcadia-like landscape and its Sanctuary, “reverberant with sacred authority”, scene of initiation into the Mysteries. These Mysteries, as the author explains, “were a venue, a means whereby human beings can be initiated into a double life; into this fleeting horizontally temporal life can be introduced the lightning bolt of the vertical divine”. Versluis goes on to explore the ancient gods (“all manifestations of the divine”) and some of the profound symbols and mythical motifs with which the world of the ancient Mysteries was filled: serpents, centaurs, twin figures like Castor and Polydeuces, the celestial mountain, the north as the land of eternal light, and the notion of the hieros gamos or sacred marriage. Altogether a most light-filled book, which gives me hope that the secret traditions of indigenous Europe have a future as well as a past.
