About the Author
George Horace Lorimer (October 6, 1867 – October 22, 1937) was an American journalist and author. He is best known as the editor of The Saturday Evening Post. During his editorial reign, the Post rose from a circulation of several thousand to over a million. He is credited with promoting or discovering a large number of American writers, e.g. Jack London. Lorimer was born in Louisville, Kentucky, the son of the Rev. George C. Lorimer and Belle Burford Lorimer. He attended Moseley High School in Chicago, Colby College, and Yale University. In 1899 he became editor-in-chief of The Saturday Evening Post, and remained in charge until the last day of 1936, about a year before his death from throat cancer. He served also as vice president, president, and chairman of Curtis Publishing Company, which published the Post.

...and that when you're in the wrong you can't afford to lose it." Great book loaded with timeless wisdom from an individual I'd have liked to have met given his no nonsense quips. Comes across as very intelligent (maybe no surprise given his being the editor of the Saturday Evening Post at one time) and includes a very good image gallery at the close with references to the Armor meat-packing company that had me hunting for more info on the internet. Very good book and leave you with one other quote I really liked, "Puttimg off an easy thing makes it hard, and putting off a hard one makes it impossible."

Timeless wisdom

This book is a terrific read with timeless insights and wisdom about making your way in the world. Sure it's old school, but dont let that dissuade you. I docked a star because this particular reprint has an incredibly small typeface/font. Easy to find .pdf downloads, however I wanted a bound copy to give as a gift. This will suffice but not ideal.

About the Author
Dr Reddy is a Distinguished Professor and inaugural holder of the Oscar S. Wyatt Endowed Chair in Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas. Dr Reddy has been a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Texas at Austin, a Research Scientist for Lockheed Missiles and Space Company, and Professor of Engineering at the University of Oklahoma from 1975 to 1980, at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University from 1980 to 1992, and now at Texas A&M University since 1992. Dr Reddy is the author of more than 300 journal papers and 14 textbooks on theoretical formulations and finite-element analysis of problems in solid and structural mechanics (plates and shells), composite materials, computational fluid dynamics, numerical heat transfer, and applied mathematics. He is the first recipient of the University of Oklahoma College of Engineering's Award for Outstanding Faculty Achievement in Research, the 1984 Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the 1985 Alumni Research Award at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and the 1992 Worcester Reed Warner Medal and 1995 Charles Russ Richards Memorial Award of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Dr Reddy is a Fellow of the American Academy of Mechanics (AAM), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the ASME, the American Society of Composites (ASC), the International Association of Computational Mechanics (IACM), the U.S. Association of Computational Mechanics (USACM), the Aeronautical Society of India (ASI), and the American Society of Composite Materials. Worked well for self-study

I taught myself FEM for a project that needed it from this book. The book was well structured and clearly written such that I needed no other outside resources to figure out what to do. (The project was a mechanical simulation for part of a physics experiment I was working on.) Would recommend without hesitation to the self-studier.

One of the Best Textbooks in FE

Not only was I introduced to the infinite world of Finite Elements through this book, but I have also used it in the FE class I teach at UCSD. I have found the variational formulations approach most helpful as it fits anyone in the various disciplines of engineering and applied mathematics. "Give me the field equation and I shall develop the FE model" is the motto I have used to build a career in FE; and Dr. Reddy's Book was certainly the cornerstone. OK..I am biased...Dr. Reddy was my doctoral advisior; he is the best in the business.

a very good book

I learnt FE from this book. It is clear, coincise, full of well-worked examples. It covers almost all of the aspectes of FE programming. The book contains two educational codes, thought both are FORTRAN77 code, one can easily understand what's going on, so as to rewrite it in C or, say, FORTRAN90.
The first s chapters of the book regard the FEm method in general, the 4th focuses on structural mechanics, 5th is about errors in FE analysis, 6th and 7th about numerical integration and 8th is on 2 and 3 dimension FE problem.
Actually this is an introductory book, so the 2 and 3 D problems are not deeply trated.
The book is never hard to understand, and it's suitable (waw!!) for self study.

This story was was every bit of an epic saga!

Very good story! I have been wanting to read some of Mr. Kristian's work, and this was a great way to start! I will defiantly be purchasing the Raven series and starting the God of Vengeance when it is available in the US. I have always loved Vikings and Norse mythology and this story was was every bit of an epic saga!

Outstanding, fun short story

In this short story spin-off from his latest novel, God of Vengeance, Giles Kristian takes us back a generation to tell the tale of how Sigurd's father Harald won the hand of the beautiful Grimhild in marriage. The challenge laid down to Sigurd and three others by Grimhild's father is to swim to the island of Vikaholmane and steal his rival's prize ram - a vicious beast known as 'The Terror'. With a premise reminiscent of bloodthirsty Irish legend The Tain, the story feels like it could have been torn from the pages of an ancient saga, yet is written in accessible, modern prose.

The tale is told in Giles Kristian's usual fast-paced, visceral style, with thrilling action balanced by the humorous banter between the characters and the interweaving of historical details. Fans of his Norse novels will feel right at home and should not hesitate to check this out. In fact, this is highly recommended for anyone who is a fan of Viking era historical fiction (although, technically speaking, this actually takes place slightly before the Viking era)

For newcomers to the genre however, a word of warning. The story is short and the pace fast; Kristian does not slow down to explain the terms and mythology. If you don't know Baldur from Bifrost, you may feel a bit lost here, and the use of Norwegian words such as skipsbåt, while adding authenticity, will have even experienced readers of the genre furrowing their brows.

A further note is that although the story is primarily concerned with the quest for the ram, there is a significant amount of framing, and the tale doesn't really start until about a quarter of a way in, while Kristian introduces the backdrop to the story, the existence of Sigurd as a baby and the characters who take part in the quest.

Overall however, this an excellent short story that any fan of Viking era historical fiction will take great pleasure from reading. Highly recommended.

Great introduction to this author and his work

I thought this was a very well done little story. It had verisimilitude, was dark and gritty, and still managed to convey some humor. It actually made me want to read more of the author and look at his works. There were some words (such as swiving), which I didn't understand at first glance, but I got the meaning from context.

Technical know-how and hands-on examples: 0-60 with WebSockets

Full disclosure: I had the opportunity to review the early version of the book, and also wrote the foreword for the book. And the good news is, I gave it a glowing review based on the early drafts, and it has only gotten better since! The book strikes a perfect balance between technical know-how, and hands-on examples and implementation.

If you're not familiar with WebSockets, then think of it as an upgraded TCP connection, but with clean browser API and a set of convenient abstractions such as built-in message framing, protocol negotiation, bi-directional communication, multiplexing, and more. Broadly speaking there are two parts to WebSocket: the browser API specified by W3C, and the wire protocol defined by IETF (RFC 6455). The book begins with a good overview of each component - if you don't much care for the wire protocol, you can skip right over. Alternatively, if you're a protocol geek (like myself), then you have a great launching point for further research - the book covers just enough to answer all the common questions.

Following the technical introduction, the book dissects three hands-on examples: an XMPP chat implementation layered over WebSockets, a STOMP messaging client, and finally a full blown VNC implementation over WebSockets, which includes hands-on demos and code examples of how to work with binary data, protocols, and all other important WebSocket features. Finally, the book concludes with a good discussion on deployment and security best practices - an area all too often overlooked. Long story short, this book should take you from 0 to 60 with WebSockets, and you'll have fun doing it.

Great introduction to WebSocket

The book is well written and examples are very helpful and complement the book well. The VM Appliance downloadable from the book website is simply brilliant. Everything you need to learn WebSocket (nodejs,Chrome, wireshark, etc) are all pre-installed in this Ubuntu VM. You just load it using VirtualBox and your learning lab is ready to go. Nothing to set up. This alone worth 10X the price of the book. Great works by these authors. Thank you!

The Rest of the Story

It's been over a decade since James Wilson's book, Adrenal Fatigue: The 21st Century Stress Syndrome, came out.Adrenal Fatigue: The 21st Century Stress Syndrome That book seem to form the current basis of knowledge for doctors who address adrenal issues (holistic, functional, and alternative practioners). Western-trained Endocrinologists don't address, or even accept the notion that adrenal glands can be stressed and underperforming. It has to be Addison's Disease (non-functioning glands) before they will see you. But Wilson only told part of the story - mild and moderate adrenal fatigue. Only Lam addresses severe fatigue and pre-Addison's adrenal exhaustion. If Dr. Lam were not so generous with his writings on his website, I would still be too sick to get out of bed and at my wit's end as well!

As a fibromyalgia patient of 6 years, i seemed to finally have my hypothyroid and pain under control, but my doctor couldn't say why my energy was steadily decreasing. Not recognizing adrenal fatigue sooner and then being diagnosed and "mistreated" with adrenal supplements and steroids which backfired, I landed into the worst stage of adrenal stress, just short of failure. Dr. Lam's writings online and in his book Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome - Reclaim Your Energy and Vitality with Clinically Proven Natural Programs (With Online Recovery Module and Other Bonuses) (Dr. Lam's Adrenal Recovery Series)sounded like he was describing my personal case history when all other writings said supplements or gland extracts would be cure me. No one else even mentioned the possibility for the paradoxical reactions I had, while he wrote that they would be expected in my circumstances! He shared so much information at his website, I wasn't sure how much more his book could contain. But it does contain much more and it has been my constant companion since it arrived a month ago. I have dog-eared pages, underlined and highlighted passages in every chapter. The material is coherent and so thorough. I have put his suggestions to use and am now making progress. This book is the rest of the story about AFS, expanding Wilson's work, going broader, further and in an enormously helpful,digestable manner. Dr. Lam's book is a must read for every alternative practioner, internist, endocrinologist, and every patient suffering from extreme exhaustion!

Mixed feelings: Fear based but Informative

I read the book, and ended up going through an interview process with Dr. Lam himself. Here is my take:

I didn't find any other book that explained what I was experiencing so spot on. I think Dr. Lam truly understands the deep levels and complexity of Adrenal Fatigue. HOWEVER, I think there is another business agenda going on here. His book also has a pervasive theme of "You won't get better without my help" when he states over and over: "it is needed to find a good practitioner experienced in natural healing in your area to guide you through this step"...it both validated me and increased my anxiety to read the book because I felt like unless I paid the enormous fee per phone call to get his help I wouldn't get better.

The first conversation with his staff was about how much I could afford per day in supplements. Money focused healthcare is always a red flag. There were other red flags that I won't go into here.

He probably truly can help people heal, but at what cost? Unless you are super rich and/or completely desperate, the high cost will add to your stress. So I left with mixed feelings.

Natural, gentle approach for adrenal fatigue sufferers!!

I knew that I was suffering from some sort of fatigue, but was at a loss on how to address this debilitating syndrome without the use of pharmaceutical drugs or other harmful methods for my already stressed out body. Dr Lam in great detail explains all the syndromes that I have been experiencing, but he also gives hope in explaining how our bodies can recover - which is after all why I am reading this book! The natural approach using diet, exercise and natural supplements really appeals to me. But do not be fooled - it isn't your run of the mill kind of approach. Dr Lam is systematic and is constantly teaching us to be more attuned to our bodies, something that you don't hear often.

The book is written in a very user friendly format, and in easy to understand language. For those who think they may be suffering from adrenal fatigue but are not sure, this book will help clarify things for you, as it did for me! What a relief it was to read that I had legitimate reasons for waking up extremely tired, needed to nap almost everyday and was wide awake after midnight - that it wasn't because I was lazy. For years I lived with the guilt that I just wasn't as hardworking as my peers and that I just needed to 'buckle up'.

Now with this guide book in hand, I can better understand what my body is trying to tell me and how to help it heal. I am so excited that this book is available for the general public at such a reasonable price, and really hope that it will bring much hope to the many men and women out there suffering silently for so long.

The Freedom of Peaceful Action is the first installment of the trilogy The Nature of Liberty, which makes an ethical philosophic case for individual liberty and the free market against calls for greater government regulation and control. Although the conclusions of evolutionary psychology have been long considered to be at odds with the philosophies of individual liberty and free markets, The Nature of Liberty presents a reconciliation that reveals their ultimate compatibility, as various important findings of evolutionary psychology, being logically applied, confirm much of what philosophic defenders of liberty have been saying for centuries. In this ambitious work, Stuart Hayashi clearly, systematically, and accessibly articulates the secular, philosophical, and moral foundations of a free society based on the supremacy of individual rights in which each person has the opportunity to pursue his flourishing and happiness. The author explains these foundations in language that will be understandable to educated laypersons, college students, and concerned citizens who follow current political issues covered by the media. While discussing the compatibility of human nature and individual rights, he makes a compelling and unprecedented argument that particular theories from the field of evolutionary psychology are congruent with Objectivism’s views on human nature, individual rights, morality, social relationships, and the nature and rules of a proper government (i.e., a limited night watchman state).
