Good book for an experienced feminist

Donovan knows what she's talking about in this book. Generally understudied academic research is organized into one volume.

But because of the depth which she delves into her area, it's not a good choice for an "Intro to Women's Studies" course. You're going to have to set aside some time to get through a chapter.

Easily dispelling the notion that women's studies is light reading material, the material is substantive.

an ambitiously encyclopedic introduction

I read the book over a decade ago, the 1985 edition. I still regard it as a great introduction to feminist theory. The book was very condensed and so not easy to read at times, as Donovan tried to compress a review of like 200 books plus historical details into some 200 pages, necessarily making the review highly abstract. But it was very worth it precisely for the breadth. It was also very good for reference because she seems to have read every piece of feminist writing ever produced. The greatest strength of the book, I think, is in her classification: liberal, cultural, marxist, psychoanalytic, existential, radical and contemporary cultural feminism. It clarifies a lot of non-sense in the media, since the attack on feminists by conservatives frequently devolves around a confusion between liberal and cultural feminism. I think the best way to classify feminist theories, however, is to make two fundamental orientations, liberal feminism and cultural feminism, and then subsume all theoretical sub-orientations (marxist, psychoanalytic, existentialist, radical, semantico-structural, and the care-ethic type) under cultural feminism as its diversification. That is a suggestion. Another thing about feminist theory is that it is very peculiarly Modern and Western, and more specifically American. The subtitle "The Intellectual Traditions of American Feminism" is very signficant, and this cultural and epochal relativity is an essential aspect of feminist theory that should be explored. Also the relationship -- or rather the disjuncture -- between feminist theory and women's movement is not explored. While many women are breaking glass ceilings in American society, very little of them have any knowledge of "feminist theories", and the theorists themselves, mostly working at universities, are getting loftier in their theoretical world. The most impact they made seems to be in the restructuration of universities, but not beyond. This is a very interesting phenomenon that, along with the first, should receive some attention in such a comprehensive introduction as Donovan's.

Learning to recieve the truth

Mental telepathy is one of those subjects, like the weather, that almost always carries with it an automatic interest on the part of those who encounter it on an almost daily basis. Our tendency to pick up telepathic signals from those we meet in the course of an average day, as well as the transmissions we consciously or unconsciously beam into the minds of others, sometimes blend into the fabric of our mundane existence with almost no recognition that anything out of the ordinary is happening. Learning to literally "hear" the small, still voice of cosmic common sense and wisdom is a skill that anyone would find useful--given that they are opened up to it in the right way and actually able to master it in practical terms. If Tuella manages to lead the reader to even a small portion of that bliss and peace she says is available to all, then "Cosmic Telepathy" is more than worth its purchase price and the time spent in reading it.

Incongruent

I have read part of the series of Rampa stories. There are two major incongruent suggestions made by the T. Lobsang Rampa vs. this author. This book refers to christ in the "savior" manner. The T. Lobsang Rampa never made that distinction. Tullia in this book goes on some sort of ranting about "the lord and savior" christ. Rampa indicated that Christ was a teacher and he was a child of god as we all are and that we have the same potential of equal proportion. Unlocking that power is what the Rampa story was about not dependance on another.
The Rampa stories dealt with orgainazied religions as a "man made" influence for control issues keeping those in power rather with knowledge rather than giving equal opportunity to the masses. Keeping the inheritance of power from being learned. Some of mankind tweaked the orginal teachings and perverted it for their own use.
The Lobsan Rampa never refered to himself as part of the Galatic Federation in any association. As far as a "savior" goes Rampa recognized that all beings were a part of God and no one "savior" was going to rise up and return to get anyone out of their own mess. He was pretty clear that man could change the things for his better part and that there would be help when asked but a "knight in armor on a white horse coming to the rescue" was not going to happen.
Book 12 of the Rampa series indicated that he was captured by but never a part of this organization of the Galatic Federation nor did he hint that he had been recruited so to speak. What Rampa did do is convey to man that mankind could and had the power to change his/herself by using the power with in. Understanding the power within is what Rampa was teaching not dependancy on any organization to save the human race.
As a matter of fact in book 12 of the Rampa series he indicated that the "Superior Alien Beings" based on his experience in the story had deliberated in destroying the population of this world. Scraping it and starting over would have been easier by some accounts that to let the population continue on self destruction.
The author of this book may have "channeled" some being though I doubt it was T. Lobsang Rampa. This book is not congruent to the general story line of T.Lobsan Rampa series. I personally feel that this author Tullia did hit on some similiarites in meditation and telepathic process. If you are truely intrested in learning about meditation and telepathic process I would advised reading the Rampa stories first, learning about the Tibetian forms of meditation, then read, read, read. Maybe reading about some of the traditional pathways such as yoga or one of the martial art forms would be a better source to persue.
There are many beings (human or otherwise) who do not want any human to know their true potential. This can be displayed in the form of tricking even some well meaning people into giving inadequate guidance to keep the seeker off track.
