Excellent written primer, substandard paperback printing

I came to "Windows Server 2012: Up and Running" via the online version at Safari Books Online (I use it in college). Crisp text, full color illustrations; a great source of information. Then the book arrived. The grays/blacks/whites in the print and illustrations remind me of a so-so copy machine job. Some of the print in the illustrations is simply unreadable. Yes, it could just be my copy but the comments in the (as of 3/24/2013) only other review also mention issues with the type and printing. The previews available (through Google preview) on the publisher's site (O'Reilly) show a full color book.

To be fair to Amazon, if you click on the print version preview on Amazon, it does show black-and-white illustrations. I did not view the print version preview on Amazon prior to purchasing the book because nothing in the description - at least nothing I could see - indicated that the print version would be different from the online version. And, really, I would have been happy with the b/w layout if the illustrations were legible.

The constant distraction of the poor printing is unfortunate. First time author Samara Lynn is clearly enthusiastic about Server 2012 and cares enough to communicate her ideas in a clear, concise style that retains a light, flowing character. Her references to the differences between 2012 and past versions will help uses familiar with the Server family feel at home.

The book is not the be-all, end-all of Server 2012 books and that's why the subtitle is "Up and Running." I used the material to do just that - get up and running in a short time. Active Directory, Hyper-V, User Management, networking, remote access - the basics are covered. Navigating the new GUI access is also covered (I was happy to hear that the author briefly had the same trouble I did - how do I shut this thing down?)

Verdict: Good written introduction to Server 2012 that should be read via the online version (Safari, if you have access) or the Kindle version. I've come to expect more from books carrying the O'Reily imprint. If I had ordered the Kindle version or reviewed the Safari online version, my rating would be 5-stars.

Terrible Screenshots; Better Instructions on Google

O'Reilly has long held a reputation for top-flight technical books. I think it's a bit undeserved, but generally speaking I've been happy with them. This book, however, will have you asking how it made it to press. Because it's a basic, "click this, then that" type of book, it goes without saying that the screenshots that go with the instructions should be clear. What you get instead are black-and-white images that look as if they've been photocopied on a printer needing a toner refresh. Look at the other reviews here, and even the generously forgiving hearts who awarded five stars to this mess give mention to the poor quality of the graphics.

One of my pet peeves about tech books--one that I will not overlook and have written about before--is paying a lot of money for a skinny text with huge diagrams/images/screenshots that take up so many pages like deliberate filler. Not only was that the case here, but the images were nearly unreadable.

Two stars may have been appropriate, but due to the foolish five-star reviewers who do you a disservice, it's a one.

Very Nice

This book is a very good read. Well outlined, obviously very well researched and fun to read. I only wished however, that the illustrations were in color or at least large enough that the options and settings in the diagrams could be seen. It's one thing to read about (for example) Converting GUI to Minimal Server Interface, but not being able to view the diagrams clearly leaves me a bit frustrated. Good as a primer on Server 2012 though.

Good read, def. seems like truth even if it doesn't have much scientific stuff in there. Can totally relate to examples such as speaking about a project that you want to start too early and it not working out.

It would be better if it didn't have so much bible quotes etc. that's not really useful at all.

Sometimes, silence is a good thing. For someone who likes to yammer on in real life, there is a reason why people say silence is golden. And not in any particular order:
1) Less noise to deal with.
2) Keep your secrets to yourself --- more privacy.
3) Keep your friends secrets --- gives them more privacy, and you are more trusted
4) You can appreciate the sounds of nature.
5) You can hear what's going on around you. You are safer this way, if someone is planning harm to you, or to the general vicinity.
6) You become more calm.

A Closed Mouth Gathers No Feet!

Continually made me think of Ron White's remark after being arrested and advised of his rights. . ."I had the right to remain silent, but not the ability." Not many of us actually received targeted training regarding how, why, and when it's advantageous to say nothing. This little book, a very quick read, contains a lot of food for thought, some of which may be remembered and used when that's the case. To balance things out, it's necessary to speak up at times, and that's included, too. I think this could be a very empowering teaching tool in the right context. An occasional refresher read of this material is probably one of the world's better ideas.

Fantastic!

This book is like a bible! I was almost overwhelmed by the detail and great content shared in this book. I found the emotional components related to each disease to be very accurate and the key points shared in the book to be extremely helpful! Evette also clearly explained the Key Points under each disease and emotional components, which issues and blocks to focus on when approaching certain diseases. The Key Points are explained very well. If you are a an alternative practitioner then you will find that in the a session with a client has already been mapped out for you in the Key Points under each illness. This was so helpful, as Evette recorded all the right questions to ask a client.

I particularly loved the first 4 chapters in the book, where Evette explains the history and foundation of Metaphysical Anatomy and a little bit about their personal development seminars content, which was high level information but easy to understand and interesting.

She also explained how to become a better alternative practitioner by sharing great tips on how to improve your practitioner skills. I am an alternative practitioner and found this to be very helpful and insightful.

This book is a must-have for all holistic healthcare and well-being professionals and I look forward to working with it for many years to come.

Mind/Body/Spirit Connection

Metaphysical Anatomy takes a deep look at the mind/body/spirit connection of disease and illness. While there are other books that address this idea, Metaphysical Anatomy takes the subject much deeper with more insight and suggestions. When I have looked up issues with myself, I am frequently surprised at how the information accurately pertains to my personality, past experiences and view of the world. A very good book that raises the bar compared to previous published books on the same subject and will make you look at your well being from a different perspective.

Great stuff, with one caveat

As a therapist and a person in the midst of healing an "incurable" neurological issue, I very much appreciate the information in Volume 2. It's right on target, and a promising tool for releasing trauma and for healing. However, when I read the description I somehow missed the important bit about needing Volume 1 in order to utilize the information. Volume 1 is available on Amazon as a paperback, not in Kindle format now. And it is costly! ONLY BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU ARE WILLING TO BUY VOLUME 1. That's no doubt why the 1 star review got written. I think this needs to be clearly stated in the description. To the authors credit, she said the description I read was an unauthorized version which she is straightening out. She thanked me and offered a coupon for Volume 1. I've ordered Volume 1 and will update review.

* Unique, although it can be based on recycled ideas
* Insightful, helping people to see things in new ways or solve new problems
* Communicating values that resonate with the intended audience
* Freely shared

The author claims that very little is written about thought leadership, but a quick search on Amazon reveals more than 30 books with "thought leadership" in their titles, with many more on content marketing, which is a closely related concept. Whilst this is the most comprehensive book on thought leadership that I have read, it fails to arrive at a concise definition, and as a result ends up encompassing things ranging from scientific research to innovative advertising, things which are clearly not, according to common understanding of the term, "thought leadership".

The Dove Real Beauty advertising campaign, for example, was a highly successful case of creating and communicating ideas, but did not in my opinion constitute "thought leadership" because it did not attempt to establish someone as a recognised authority in a specialised field. Thought leadership is normally regarded as a marketing technique for someone who is a provider of expertise such as a professional service firm, not for a company that sells products.

In my opinion, someone who is interested in pursuing a thought leadership strategy will find plenty of interesting material in this book, but would be well advised also to read a good book on content marketing for advice on how to use an integrated social media communication program.
