About the Author
Vinai is a passionate Web Developer and open source enthusiast since 1998. Today his main focus in on Training Developers how to customize Magento. The first language he used for real projects and fell in love with was PERL, quickly followed by JavaScript and others. Since 2001 he is mainly focussed on PHP, but trying to learn at least one new language or framework each year. Most projects where custom developed applications, ranging from database converters, interactive CD-ROMs (that was a thing at one time), video compression, Typo3 extensions, Intershop cartridges, online shops to hosting, networking, automated testing, multi-user stock simulation, and more. He used to like to describe himself as a Jack of all trades, master of none. Since March 2008 Vinai specialized on the Magento platform, which, at the time, still was in the later Beta stages. Working as a freelancer for his own clients and as in large teams he was able to gather valuable experience in projects ranging from very small to quite large. This enabled Vinai to move into training Developers how to effectively customize Magento. Since then he has spent thousands of hours giving trainings, both in-house and open to everybody, in all aspects of the Magento platform. Topics range from extension development to using git with Magento, performance tuning and automated testing. Since March 2010 he also is Instructor for the official Magento U developer trainings for Magento. He spent two years as a full time employed trainer for Magento, but decided he preferred the freedom to focus on projects he choses himself, and works as a freelancer again since January 2014. He is a member of the Magento Certification Advisory Board and was one of the first to pass the MCD+ exam.

Do Not Judge This Book By Its Cover!

So ugly is the graphic, so strange is the title, and so few are the pages, that after I pulled the book from the package and looked at the cover, my inclination was to shove it back in and ship it right back to Amazon. And I would have. But I kept it because I am obsessed with learning Magento. So I sat down and read Grokking Magento cover to cover. Three times. Then I went out and breezed through my Magento Certification Exam. Beginners take note: at the time I read Grokking Magento I was beyond a Magento novice.

In the world of Magento developers, Vinai Kopp is surely a master, for Vinai has created a masterful work, the first and so far as I am aware, the only scholarly, logical, understandable development book on Magento. Do not turn your nose up at the offputting title, Grokking Magento (as inviting as “Bladder Infection”), and the skeletal graphic that greets you (I am told it is a flower). Beauty lies between the covers., I can assure you.

So, if your heart’s desire is to become a Magento developer, follow your dream, summon your courage, kiss this frog and you will finally meet Magento. This review is no fairy tale.

Excellent Understanding Of Magento Core Code

Vinai is a true Magento guru, and not just a guru but is gifted in explaining Magento core code in a simple to understand way. The chapters give more than enough detail about each Certification Study Guide question answer. He doesn't just give the answer, but all the core code explanation to back it up. Very good book. Thanks - Vinai also has tons of great stackoverflow forum posts answers that I have used frequently. Without Vinai and Alan Storm Magento programming would be a whole lot harder. Please continue this series Vinai.

About the Author
Frank Turner is a folk/punk singer-songwriter. He was the lead singer of rock band Million Dead before embarking on a solo career. Turner has released six solo albums as well as EPs and rarities, and has played thousands of shows across 38 countries.

but instead it reads a bit like Bridget Jones' Diary without Darcy

I thought there would be stories about how he developed as a musician or the stories behind some of his songs, but instead it reads a bit like Bridget Jones' Diary without Darcy. The book is broken up by shows and recounts: how f***ed up he got before/after the show, how packed the club was, and whether he slept on a floor, couch or in a bed.

Each time he gets close to an interesting story - the death of a friend, his relationship with his father - he backs away with the statement that it is too personal. He's probably right, and I admire his decision to keep the personal private, but that leaves thin material for storytelling.

I could hear Frank reading it! :)

As a Frank Turner fan, I couldn't possibly pass this book up. I found it a fascinating read, and could hear Frank's voice while reading about his journeys and antics. I enjoyed hearing about the background of some of this songs, and it's fascinating to me what he (and I would imagine many other musicians) has gone through in order to make a living at something he loves.

Anyone interested in touring as a musician would find this an informative read, even if there's no interest in Frank himself.

About the Author

Michael O’Toole is an emeritus professor of communication at Murdoch University, Perth. He was an early pioneer of audio-visual language teaching methodology and was commissioned by the BBC to write and broadcast two Russian courses for radio. He worked with the Australian ‘discourse analysis’ school led by Michael Halliday and helped to develop their work in the areas of literary stylistics, general semiotics, and art and aesthetics.

A living book

Friends' or relatives' birthday? When desperate for inspiration, this is the perfect gift. I've just bought it for a hospital doctor as I know all doctors are art lovers at heart. The interactive CD-Rom is just great. The author and others talk to you about famous paintings using multimedia shadings and highlightings to pick out key details: you learn about how paintings work and why they are the way that they are. All in beautifully clear English which is great for non native speakers of English. How do I know? Well apart from working in a Medical Faculty myself, I recently had a 10-day spell in an Italian hospital. Result: nurses, patients, doctors all curious, all looking at the CD and all talking about their favourite museums and art galleries - even the Romanian cleaners got in on the act. When I wanted to be by myself, I just read the book. With its relaxing style, its colour pictures, drawings, quotes from poems ... the book is dripping with culture but written in a way that's easy to take in when you're not feeling so good.

So if you have a friend or relative bored stiff in hospital don't take them a bunch of flowers or a box of chocolates, take them a real tonic ...anyone can dip in and out of this lovely living book which they can share with others.The Language of Displayed Art
