About the Author
The author holds a PhD in Native American History, from the University of California, Riverside, in addition to a Master's Degree in Chicano History from California State University, Los Angeles. The author is a professor of history at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, California. He is the director of the Native American History program for the college. The memories of playing with his toy soldiers and Indians as a child and his inability let the Indians win play a role in is decision to research and write "Childhood Indians."

Opened my Eyes

This is a great book, a little tough in the first chapter, but the realization that this book will provide you with is unmatched in today's textbooks. Chavez's points will make you want to run and tell a friend...
As individuals of society we need to be critical of what is commonly passed off as truth. Chavez brings to our attention how much we are influenced by film and other forms of media. In order to maximize the life altering realizations we, the readers, need to be opened minded to the possibility of hidden racisms by unsuspecting perpetrators. The White (sub)conscious is that subtle racism, which many main stream Americans commonly over look or do not understand. To describe the white (sub)conscious in the simplest terms, would be a person who is unconsciously participating in a prejudice and racism way of thinking or acting. However, it is important to remember that the White (sub)conscious that Dr. Chavez describes is not limited to the persons of European dissent. For Example, if we walked in to a bank and asked to speak to the branch manager, we would not expect to see a minority man drenched in his non white culture to come from out of the office. In most cases we would expect see a white man; however, in those case where a minority was in a position of power, we definitely do not expect or will accept him/her to be any but a person that has assimilated to our American way of life. Moreover, the white (sub)conscious plays a crucial role in how mainstream media, particularly the film industry, portrays not just Native Americans but minorities in general. This is where Chavez's book differs from other works regarding the poor representation of natives in film. Chavez, work explains how we, as Americans, contribute to this view of natives. By accepting the theatrical representation of these people as truth, we are further subjugating our society to an inaccurate depiction of a group of Americans. Therefore, as movie goers it is okay to enjoy these types of films, but as responsible Americans and people on this planet we need to know that Natives our more than feathers and Tomahawks.

In a socially, ethically, and politically divided society, citizens are quick enough to sustain the image of what a Native American has represented, circa 20th century America. In Dr. Chavez's excerpt of Childhood Indians; his depiction of what a true Indian represents is among many stereotypical assumptions, defined by the white (sub) conscience. Dr. Chavez navigates throughout the typical beliefs and creates a true understanding of what a Native American truly is, by representation, experience, honor, and acceptance of true identity.
Indians (Native Americans) have always seemed to be a closed chapter in history. A vast amount of our society had/has already labeled this group as a pessimistic, stereotypical congregation and left it at that. While engulfing in Dr. Chavez's theory of Native American's in Childhood Indians; as a reader and audience, it gives you a perspective on a closed book that should have been given the long awaited opportunity to be understood for what their class truly was and presently is.
Minorities have been stripped of their satisfaction for true representation of their heritage. After reading Childhood Indians, this book has given me a better understanding of Native American's; their struggles, their conquers,their struggle with social acceptance,their ability to prosper throughout their battle with negativity and their love for their loyal Indians.
If I hadn't picked up this book, full of honest knowledge about a subject I thought I truly knew, I wouldn't have this better understanding of a Native American's life, and what their lives were like, how people have judged them and their battle for acceptance. I truly enjoyed this book and I hope others can be open enough to enjoy a book full of knowledgable truth of the Native American's.
Dr. Chavez did a wonderful job with this book and I'm looking forward to the next book(s) he will be extending out to those who are seeking to grow more in their history of unanswered questions.

Brilliant, beautiful, and a reality check!

Raul Chavez's Childhood Indians: Television, Film and Sustaining the White (Sub) Conscience is a brilliant examination of Native Americans within television and film. His vast research and analysis of television and film from the beginning to contemporary times, of visual media, helps the reader, and in extension Americans, understand why such negative depictions of Native Americans have been so prevalent. Through his analysis Chavez develops what he calls the white (sub) conscience, "a belief system predicated on an inconspicuous racist message resulting from the negative depiction of people of color in film," which in turn aids the perpetuation of such racist messages. As he takes us through the development, or anti-development, of the Native American in television and film, Chavez helps the reader understand that the white (sub) consciences is not specific to Native Americans, but also extends to all people of color. It is what allows Americans to accept such racist notions, and in turn disenfranchise both Native Americans and people of color and continue to claim that race is irrelevant, when in reality, as Chavez helps us understand, is still everything. Through Childhood Indians, Chavez invites the reader to recreate their own "childhood Indians," to recognize the white (sub) conscience, and engage in the destruction, or at least the rationalization, of it. Childhood Indians is definitely one of the leading books examining the relationship between Native Americans and visual media of the 21st century and clearly establishes Raul Chavez amongst great Native American writers and scholars such as Gerald Vizenor and the late Louis Owens, amongst many others. Chavez becomes one of Owens' "...more than three hundred published Indian writers whose collective project is resistance to and the destruction of that colonial American meta-narrative that has long been and is still determined to make [Indians] invisible." Overall Childhood Indians proves to be a great read and a tool for understanding how, despite going through a Civil Rights movement, racism is still alive and thriving amongst Americans and American culture. (On a side note, if the book ever becomes an audio-book it would definitely be worthy of having the great William Shatner narrate it, mind you it would have to be in a 'Star Trek'-esque style, whatever that means.)
