Drei von vierzehn Stadtvierteln werden völlig zerstört, sieben sind unbewohnbar. Tausende Menschen verlieren alles, was sie besaßen. Doch was war die Ursache für diese verheerende Katastrophe? Seit fast 2000 Jahren beschäftigen sich Historiker mit genau dieser Fragestellung. Eine der ältesten und detailliertesten Schilderungen der Ereignisse findet sich bei dem antiken Geschichtsschreiber Publius Cornelius Tacitus, der zum Zeitpunkt des Brandes zehn Jahre alt gewesen ist. Neben der Überlieferung bei Tacitus wird der Brand auch in anderen antiken Quellen geschildert, deren Autoren den Brand jedoch alle nicht persön-lich miterlebt haben können. Dazu gehören u. a. Sueton mit seiner Nero-Vita und Cassius Dio mit seiner Römischen Geschichte, deren Werke mit denen des Tacitus in dieser Arbeit verglichen werden sollen. Problematisch ist dabei allerdings die Intention, mit denen die drei genannten Autoren geschrieben haben. Sie stammen alle aus der senatorischen Geschichtsschreibung und müssen daher entsprechend kritisch gelesen und bewertet werden. Da sich alle Autoren bereits auf andere Quellen beziehen, müssen ihre Werke zudem als Sekundärquellen eingestuft werden.Weitere mögliche Schriftquellen wären Plinius der Ältere mit seinem Werk naturalis historia und der Satiriker Juvenal. Einen guten Überblick über die verschiedenen Quellen findet man wenn auch schon sehr alt bei Kurfess .Das Ziel dieser Arbeit soll es sein, die Darstellung von Tacitus, Sueton und Cassius Dio auf ihren Wahrheitsgehalt zu überprüfen, dabei die Interpretationen der modernen For-schung zu berücksichtigen, um somit eine mögliche Antwort auf die Frage nach der Ursache des Brandes zu entwickeln. Dabei sollen die drei Autoren zunächst getrennt voneinander betrachtet werden, um sie anschließend möglichst effektiv und gebündelt miteinander vergleichen zu können.In der modernen Forschung haben sich drei wesentliche Forschungsmeinungen zu dieser Frage entwickelt. Einige wenige Historiker schließen sich den antiken Quellen an, die Nero die Schuld am Brand Roms geben. Gegenargumente dazu finden sich vor allem bei Robichon, Grant und Scheda. Eine weitere Interpretationsmöglichkeit ist es, den Christen die Schuld an dem Brand zu geben, so wie es z. B. Bishop, Grant und Schwier getan haben. Am häufigsten findet sich jedoch die Meinung, dass der Brand zufällig ausgebrochen sei, z. B. bei Robichon und Hanslik.

Oh the feelings!!

OH MAN! Talk about a cliffhanger! Day and Chase are the friends who become lovers. But when growing up life, distance, even death seem to constantly try their relationship. But no matter what these two always find a way back together...Or will they?

The relationship between Day and Chase is turbulent. The author wrote this book in a way you can't help but feel what the characters are whether it's happiness, love, giddiness, or pain. I laughed, smiled, and teared up while reading this book. You can't but hold out hope for these two.

This was such a good book that I really stayed up until I finished. I just couldn't stop in the middle. Then I went and bought Catching Day (Chasing Day Book 2) right away!

Daylen and Chase share a past that has had them being best friends and neighbours since they were young children. As they grow so does their bond and their feelings. They become inseparable and it is a thing of beauty to watch grow and blossom. This story starts as young friendship and respect and blossoms into love and coming into adult hood and all of the adventures and life situations that that journey takes them on. There are lots of ups and downs and twists and turns and tells the story of a heartwarming but also heartbreaking tale at times. I loved the chemistry between Daylen and Chase and desperately look forward to the second installment of their story to find out what happens next in their story as part one does end in a bit of a cliffhanger. A great read by a talented author! Happy Reading!

Thoughts: I read this as part of the Men Love Curves Anthology. Dang cliffhanger!!! I was hooked right from the start and moaned when it ended. The writing was just awesome, and the characters were so easy to love. This story really shows how hard relationships really are, even when you are in love. The struggles of long distance relationships, or how just life, emotions, and pride get in the way of what we want or know we should do but can’t. Gripping story that won’t let go until the very end, which then leaves you screaming for more!

Anything with the name Donald Goines is sure to be gold.

I was first introduced to Donald Goines in June of 1998 by August of the same year I had already read all of his books. The only thing that angered me was the fact that no one took the time to inform me about him earlier. His Gansta tales, of pimpin', hustlin' and everyday life in the ghetto gives everyone the opportunity to experience the ghetto through his eyes. With vivid details and cliffhanger storylines he never leaves you anywhere but on the edge of your seat. Personally I fell that every Black person male and female must read his books. Not only do his tales stand stronger than most books of modern time but he is still on the nose as to daily life today. Donald Goines was definitely ahead of his time, in the game and on the typewriter. Although he has gone he has left a legacy behind. A legacy of tales that will not only be passed from his generation to my generation, but as well to the next and the next. I feel if you put any Donald Goines book in a time capsule they would have the same chilling effect that they do today and 20 years ago. That is the mark of a good author, in my opinion it is fact that Donald Goines and Iceberg Slim rate with if not above any other American authors present and past, maybe we should introduce his books to our children at school and let them have an opporunity to experience the street without ever leaving the house or the library. This is also another way to intice inner city children to read when they feel nothing in the library applies to their everyday life. The only problem that I have with any of his works are that they end, and the only beef I have is that his life was struck down in what seemed to be his prime.For all interested parties read anythin by this author and pass it on to all of your friends they will thank you later and do the same thing by passing it on to their friends. That is the only way that our Black literature will survive. Thank you Donald Goines for your life and your mind may God Bless Donald Goines and all of his works I know I'm a better person for reading his books.

Desperation and lack of opportunity leads to greed

Goines scores an interesting tale of a criminal mastermind in the Midwest who builds an empire through business saavy and absolute power. The settings are vivid through his descriptive and detailed style, and the characters are gritty, realistic people with no options and trying to make a buck and remove themselves from harm's way.

The backdrop is mostly Detroit (with a bit of Chicago), so as a native Detroiter I found that very accurate and interesting. The protagonist is a classic anti-hero along the lines of a Tony Soprano...love him one minute, despise him the next. I think fans of the Mafia genre would find this a compelling read.

Very strong piece

This guy seemed to be ahead of his time. This was the first book I've read from Goines, but it won't be the last. He had a way of making the story so vivid, so real; he had a way of just bringing it to life and putting you right in the middle of the action. His characters in this story(the main ones) all had their own traits, and Prince and Ruby surely were the mad couple if there ever was one. The thing most impressive about it to me was he tied in actual events along with his story. The riots in Detroit, along with Black nationalist issues were key then, and he tied all of it in with what he was bringing to the table.

In 1980 East German author Christa Wolf took a trip to Greece accompanied by her husband, Gerhard. In 1982 she was awarded a guest lectureship at the University of Frankfurt, where in May she delivered a series of five "Lectures on Poetics" relating to her Greek travels and studies. The fifth "lecture" was ad raft of the novel Cassandra, which she then revised and expanded for publication. The four introductory lectures were published separately in Germany under the title Conditions of a Narrative: Cassandra; The Frankfurt Lectures on Poetics (Voraussetzungen einer Erzählung: Kassandra). This volume presents the novel first, followed by its companion lectures, which illuminate its background and implications.

Myth Retelling

Christa Wolf retells a myth from the the perspective of a woman who was only given a few lines in Euripides' Agamemnon (and mentioned once or twice in the Iliad.)

What's gripping about this story is not the fact that it's another variation of the sack of Troy, but the fact that someone had the guts to write it in Cassandra's words. Cassandra, whom the Greeks and Trojans call a crazy witch is the only person to oppose corruption when she sees it. She is strong and honest and powerful and intelligent, but Troy and Greece deny her a voice because she is a woman.

Some people insist that Christa Wolf grabs this fact (that she's another alienated woman) and runs on a feminist spree. Others insist that she addresses those oh-so-common themes in feminist literature: having no voice and lacking an identity in a patriarchal culture. But FRIENDS, these themes aren't only reserved for women, men also struggle with these issues. Look at Kleist and Murakami, these authors also express an inner turmoil because of the lack of an individual identity or the existence of a collective cultural one that alienates its members.

Cassandra isn't an overly feminine, esoteric, and hard-to-read piece of literature. It's beautiful not only for its content but the stream of consciousness that takes you into the very black and white core of Troy. It's honest and funny and sad and aggressive and beautiful and powerful and dark. It's one of those "good" books your brain craves for after reading every James Patterson and Linda Howard novel you might have bought from the Shoprite book aisle. :)

Beautiful prose, but not quite enough...

"Cassandra" does not read like a novel. Rather, one feels as though one is a member of the jury set to judge the entire life of one woman when the sentance (death) has already been decided. Christa Wolf doesn't retell the fall of Troy from the perspective of a female narrator. Instead, she invites the reader into the mindset of a woman in a society that is losing itself to war and to the male realm. Wolf's Cassandra is a starkly lonely figure, suffering from her isolation even before the seige of Troy begins. Bringing in a number of feminist themes to her rendition of the classic Greek tale, she weaves beautiful prose to give perspective to Cassandra's last hours.

In the traditional myth the prophetess Cassandra predicts that Troy will fall to the Greeks but no one believes her, and she is ultimately shunned in the end when her prophecy holds true. Wolf entraps the reader in Cassandra's mind, which often teeters on the brink of madness for reasons that lay largely unexplained. I felt intimately connected to the narrator at the end but largely disatisfied. There are really no other characters in the novel - merely shadows of other relationships that are never given life in and of themselves. Wolf's writing is exquisite, but I often felt more like someone sneaking a read at a forbidden diary, where I felt at the mercy of the revelations the writer felt like making. Allusions are made to friendships, loves, passions, childhood memories, but are not made explicit enough to resonate. Despite the well-crafted passages, I gave the novel 3 stars for this reason; it simply wasn't enough. I reccomend it as an interesting glimpse into the mind of a woman immobilized by her empowerment in an increasingly masculinized age (even though the strength of this perspective has lessoned some since the novel was written on the heels of the 2nd wave of the feminist movement) At times Cassandra's self-fixation became almost too much to bear, but Wolf's excellent writing carried me through until the end.

It's a powerful book, intellectually engrossing.

For about five years I have read, reread and taught (to eleventh graders) Cassandra, and each time I have groped deeper into its human and literary liklihoods. It's still compelling to me for it myriad facets of content and form, but I can't help wondering about the real-politics of Ms Wolf's life and the masculine-feminine politics of our time. There is great learning in it and cause for great deliberation--by a woman awaiting violent death: Would what we call civilization be differently composed if even half our history, philosophy, psychology, politics, art had been penned by women? How was human prehistory ordered? Why is God-presence so matter of fact, and goddess-presence so contentious, if admitted? Who/What is Cybele, really? I can't wait to read Medea.

Excellent Textbook

We have just begun to use this textbook in our technical writing classes at New Jersey Institute of Technology and it is perfect for us. It's inexpensive, it's small enough to carry and the chapters contain the most essential aspects of technical communication. Several instructors have built their entire course using this book. The quip on the front cover, "No one wants to read what you write," serves as an excellent introduction for students who are used to writing for a captive professorial audience.

Communicating for Dummies

While I found this textbook to be pretty informative, I felt that a lot of the information was sort of "no duh". This may be because of my background in business, but I thought that for a college textbook it was pretty basic, definitely could have and should be a high school level class. It certainly does contain "the essentials", which is actually not nearly as much material as you would think. It's no larger than a chapter book, and when I got it in the mail I actually felt ripped off that I had spent so much money for so little. The book itself is quite small though, easy to carry in your backpack or even purse to class if you need to.

Overall though, it was easy to read, carry, and thankfully sell back after the class was over. The information related very well to the class, and supplemented class sessions quite well. However, I don't think it's a textbook I would ever refer to after the fact, especially with the internet being so abundant with its basic information.

Excellent book

This book was a required text for a technical writing class I had taken. Believe it or not, this book is actually easy to read from cover to cover if you've got a strong background in writing. The concepts are relayed in a clear manner, and there are examples that make understanding the author's point very easy. The book addresses not only writing tasks and technicalities, but there is also an entire chapter devoted to writing ethically, which is a big deal in the age that we live in.

If you're studying engineering, this book will make a remarkable improvement in your lab report writing. I also recommend "A Guide To Writing as an Engineer" 3rd edition by David Beer and David McMurrey.

Tinker's War is a riveting story for all ages

I love science fiction and I love fantasy, but I'd never before read steampunk. A serious gap in my reading, I know.
I've followed Jamie's blog for a couple of years, but I still didn't know quite what to expect when he sent me a copy of Tinker's War. When I started reading it, I couldn't put it down, and I'm glad I didn't. It is a marvelous story. I look forward to reading The Tinkerer's Daughter.

And the story continues

Great follow on to the Tinkerer's Daughter. This picks up nicely where the first book left off, and Breeze is quite a bit older and wiser. She has a very commanding presence in the book and shows that she knows how to lead. I would really like to see a drawing of how the planes are made and driven, that would be a neat thing to see. All in all as the one before this is a great book and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who likes the Steampunk genre.

Takes place many years after the first book. I had a bit of a hard time getting started but after the first chapter I was able to immerse in the world again. I think that there should have been a book between one and two as there are some things that have happened in between, which we seem to be supposed to know, but can only learn by continued reading.
Not a real fan of the foreshadowing for book three,Still overall it was a good book, I would recommend the series to any one who enjoys a bit of steam punk.
