A lifeline for the super-organized DIY bride.

This has made my wedding planning so much simpler.

The PROs: It is so organized! Everything is tabulated, including sections for the timeline and budget, the outfits and styling, the catering, the entertainment, etc. There are pockets included for holding receipts and business cards, which was very handy. The binder opens and closes, so you can add more pages yourself, such as menus, contracts, etc.

The CONs: The binder seems to be written under the assumption that you are an heiress with an enormous wedding budget. (The sample budget was $30,000, not even in my ballpark!) It constantly suggests you get a wedding planner, when the whole purpose of the binder is to plan it yourself.

Some people have argued that you could easily print out all the pages online and made a similar binder yourself. That's possible, but in this case, someone else has already done that for you, and in a nice, sturdy binder. Isn't that worth saving yourself one more thing to do? :)

I took this with me to every meeting we had with different venues and shops and it has been a lifesaver.

A new beginning

I've read the author's Star Force and Undying Mercenaries series and am a fan. In those series, the writing style is similar - high paced, informal language, gratuitous sex. Fun, but not very serious.

This book has an entirely different feel, much more refined, profound and mature. Essentially, it's a single-character narrative, with the universe unfolding around one central character, Captain Sparhawk. Excluding that, nothing is the same as Larson's previous work. I'm anxiously awaiting the next chapter for what seems to be a significant shift in Larson's writing.

Not bad. A little slow at the beginning, but has a good ending. A new universe for Mr. Larson and it could prove very interesting as a series. Some of the science isn't great, but easily overlooked.

I rate it PG-13 for language and violence. I recommend it as a decent start for a series

Larson does it again

For fans of any of B.V. Larson's previous books rejoice! He doesn't disappoint with this book and his writing skills continue to improve. Earth has been severed from her many planetary colonists for over a century and a half. The "cataclysm", a solar flare event similar in nature to the "Carrington Event" of the mid 19th Century, destroys Earth's ability to access worm holes which makes deep space exploration possible.

Star Guard Lt. Commander Sparhawk, a bumbling, by the book, Inspector Clouseau type character has the fate of the world thrust upon his shoulders when a derelict space ship is discovered out near the mining colonies of the asteroid belt surrounding Jupiter.

Sparhawk begins to shed his innocence and grow towards his true heroic nature. Can he save the world? He is damned sure going to try... A fast paced adventurous romp. A great cast of characters. Another Larson success.

About the Author
Paul Glen and Maria McManus teamed up to write this book from vastly different perspectives. 
Paul Glen is the founder of the Leading Geeks Company. He has spent more than 25 years working on technical projects, leading technical organizations, and helping technical leaders. Since 1999, he has dedicated himself to improving the quality of technical leadership as a consultant, author, and presenter. His previous book, Leading Geeks: How to Manage and Lead People Who Deliver Technology, won several awards, among them was the 2003 Financial Times Germany International Book Prize, as the best new book published worldwide on the subject of leadership. Since 2003, he has written an award-winning column for Computerworld. He received an MBA from the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University, with majors in marketing, organizational behavior, and strategy. His BA is from Cornell University, with majors in computer science and mathematics. He has also taught as an adjunct faculty member in the MBA programs at Loyola Marymount University and the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California. 
Maria McManus built a career as a bridge between technical, creative, and business people on digital development teams, as a pioneer and leader in user experience strategy and design. As a vice president of the first-generation internet success iVillage and as a director of user experience at Disney Interactive Media Group, Maria accepted it as her calling to connect different types of people in order to create better products more efficiently. Exceptionally insightful

The authors clearly spent a tremendous amount of time on research. I am amazed at how well I better understand some of my own behaviors after finishing this book. I am in the 'geek' category, and can fully appreciate the various scenario's the authors brought up. It will serve as a reference book for a long time. I highly recommend this to anyone who deals with 'geeks' in their life, whether being one, working with them, or being friends with them. I have already applied some of the lessons to my current position to better deal with the other technical minded staff in my company, and the results have been very positive. Thank You!

This book is the follow-up to Leading Geeks, and with Maria McManus co-authoring propels the previous ideas to new heights. I earmarked at least 2 dozen pages of great thoughts and quotes that give better understanding of myself, and those I work with.

This book written by Paul Glen (a geek) and Maria McManus (creative non-geek) helps both types to understand each other.

The friction between geeks and non-geeks comes from fundamental differences in both groups world views and thought processes.

Whether you are a geek, or a non-geek, this book explains these differences with clear examples.

As a geek I am using this book to open communication with my non-geek manager to explain to her why our geek team refuses to answer some of her questions, and why so much frustration is expressed about some of her management decisions.

A must read for the geek looking to break into management. Also a must read for the manager who has technical employees that they wish to understand.

This book helps both sides to "walk a mile in the other's shoes".

"The Complete Guide" - Woefully Incomplete

If one is going to sell options for income, risk management is crucial. If we turn to the risk management chapter of this book, the authors commence by suggesting we view their advice as coming from a guy in a bar who is revealing to us the "secrets" of option selling, in hushed tones. Mmmkay. The "secret" that is imparted to us is that we can determine the best strike to sell by selecting an option priced around $400. If we look for, say, a gold call priced at $400, its strike relative to the price of gold will be much closer when gold is at $500/oz. than when gold is at $1500/oz. So this is a non-starter. The way to proceed is to use a multiple (or fraction) of the cost of a straddle, which automatically adjusts for the price and volatility of the underlying. A few chapters later the author(s) discuss their best strategy evah, the 1:3 credit ratio spread, their "Maserati" of spreads. This serves as an excuse to announce he or they have owned more than one Maserati. They give examples of such spreads using gold and soy. The only guidance they give about selecting strikes that one needs a reason to believe the market will not violate the short strike by expiration. They close the chapter by saying is it "difficult" to calculate the mid-trade profit zones. This may well be true for them: nowhere in this book did I find a chart of an option position P&L. For those unfamiliar with this, I have posted one with this review, including mid-trade profit zones. Any good options broker provides such charts. This allows you to assess your risk, and explore the effects of using different strikes and ratios - crucial for designing, say, a 1:3 credit ratio spread. All one finds in this book are primitive bar charts of the underlying. Profit and loss zones are marked off on the vertical axis. Actual amounts of profit or loss are shown.

I created a spread similar to their gold example using GLD. The P&L is shown in the accompanying image. With GLD at 112 in early June, 2015, to collect $360 option premium by August expiration you are taking on a lot of risk: a $3000 loss if GLD gets to 125 and $8000 at 130. Is that why they did not show P&L charts? This reviewer is no stranger to selling naked options. Needless to say I would not take this trade.

The authors wait until page 290 to mention the concept of implied volatility and devote all of 6 pages to the subject.

The authors do state correctly that being a net seller of option premium is generally more profitable than being a net buyer. Throughout this book they refer to the services offered by brokers. Are they hoping the reader will be moved to engage their services? If you are looking for a chatty introduction to some high risk option trading ideas, and don't mind paying $45 for it, this might be of interest. Personally I don't care to fund these folks' conspicuous consumption.

This third edition still rates high up on any scale. A great read and an honest approach to investing utilizing an option selling strategy. You need to take the time to read the whole book. You will be better for it. The author also has included a whole section presenting approaches on trading options with commodities. Tons of examples are included. You will find that the chapter describing the best strategies when selling options on stocks is worth every penny spent on the book.

this book is the real thing

I just finished reading the latest edition of this book. It is an improvement over the last edition. I have been selling stock options over many years and have about a 85% success rate. The principles of selling either stock or futures options are the same. Follow the rules and ideas described in this book and you can SLOWLY make a lot of money as I have over the years.

About the Author

Cedric Gondro is Associate Professor of computational genetics at the University of New England. He has extensive experience in analysis of livestock projects using data from various genomic platforms. His main research interests are in the development of computational methods for optimization of biological problems; statistical and functional analysis methods for high throughput genomic data (expression arrays, SNP chips, sequence data); estimation of population genetic parameters using genome-wide data; and simulation of biological systems.
