Recently adopted a dog who is stressed and fearful, especially around men. This book gave me a better understanding of stress and how to recognize it but didn't provide very many tips on how to solve my issues.

Warm, rich and honest collection

Anyone wishing to know what the great Elisabeth Kubler-Ross was like as a human being and a mensch will be very moved to joy and tears by reading through the fifty-one contributions in this book. The writers of the essays range from her son Ken to Muhammad Ali to Caroline Myss to Marianne Williamson to Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York to Raymond Moody and many other good people. Pillars of the end-of-life movement and the hospice and palliative care field share reminiscences of the extremely hard working wunderkind and down-to-earth saint. No baloney. It is well worth the investment. Read it a little at a time whenever you can or whenever you need a lift. It is a great bedside reader, at night or early to rise. Savor this woman's grand purpose and set your own a bit straighter.

Worthy in-depth memories of EKR. Moved me to tears several times.

I was one of the lucky folks who knew EKR quite well...between
the early l990's and her death. I had many cups of tea with her,
spent nights in her home, etc.
This book brought back many memories..the shopping trips, the
humor, the anger, the brilliance, and the sheer power of her being.
Even though I was working all weekend when I got it, I couldn't
put it down until I'd read very word. (I introduced the 51st chapter author to EKR so received it as a gift. But its well
worth the cover price.)
Whether you knew her or not, this wonderful book brings one of the greatest women of our time to life in a down-to-earth approachable style.
I think Elisabeth would have liked it.
Its not a "phony baloney." Its the real thing.
Hats off to her son, and other friends who took on the project and brought it to completion.
A treasure of a book. I'm 2000 miles away, and would love to
go to the book signing in Arizona. Prudence wins out, but I'd
love to be there!
Highly recommended.

Always check your references

While I found this book to be excellent in it's flow and presentation, I was extremely unhappy when I noticed that the first reference used was by Daniel Pipes (citing one of his 'statistics' of all things). Daniel Pipes is hardly a credible reference; despite his credentials. His 'journal', the Middle East Quarterly, is full of articles that are poorly referenced.

Even if citing Daniel Pipes is just an attempt to point out that the man is crazy and should be ignored, my advice is not to plague an otherwise wonderfully written work with such a person. It's time that we shut out hate-mongers and conspiracy starters like Pipes.

A Tale of Two Soldiers is a memoir about the unlikely friendship an American Jewish G.I. and trained sniper for the US Army, formed with a German Luftwaffe pilot during WWII.

On Dec. 18, 1944, twenty-one-year-old Max Gendelman was captured in the Battle of the Bulge, one of only a handful in his company to survive. Starving and dazed, his dog tags blown off, he was marched through German villages and eventually arrived at a farm the Reich had commandeered from a German family.

The family's grandson, Karl Kirschner, a lieutenant in the Luftwaffe conscripted against his will, was hiding out in one of the barns. To Max's astonishment one day Karl spoke to him through the fence; they discovered a shared passion for chess, and began to secretly meet to play the game.

As they got to know each other, they recognized what they needed to do; they formed a pact, a plan to escape together. This was the start of a friendship that would endure for more than six decades.

A young Jewish G.I. taken prisoner in the Battle of the Bulge witnessed horrific images that left him shell-shocked. For sixty years Max Gendelman avoided painful memories by nurturing his family, business, and a lifelong friendship with the German Luftwaffe pilot who helped him escape. He received the Purple Heart and was named by the French Republic ''Chevalier of The Legion Of Honor.'' Incredible Story. A Must Read

This book is a must read. I simply couldn't put it down. The first person narrative is very effective and captures the imagination of the reader right from the start. There is a freshness and almost naivety to the beginning chapters and an emotional clarity in describing war experiences and later events that suggest that while edited, this is not a ghost written text. The book is a testament to human resourcefulness and resilience in confronting and overcoming the kinds of extreme adversity during war that most of us can only contemplate in terms of worst nightmares. In my view, it is also a memoir about the universalism of the human spirit as reflected in the strong and permanent loving bond that was formed between two young men who technically were enemies. The book poignantly relates the family background of Max, a young Jewish American soldier, the horrendous World War II combat experiences he witnessed and endured during the Battle of the Bulge, his capture by the Germans and incarceration in a POW camp, and ultimate escape with the help of and together with Karl, a wounded Luftwaffe pilot. Max's leadership skills and ability to quickly size up a dangerous situation and respond accordingly are impressive to read about. The information about Karl's background and experiences adds a significant depth to the book and a good understanding of his reasons for wanting to escape Germany. The description, as related later to Max, of the family reaction when the telegram was received that Max was officially declared missing in action was emotionally overwhelming for me to read. The fact that Max and Karl remained close brothers for the rest of their lives and that their children and grandchildren also have been encircled in the strong bond of love and friendship between them was very touching as well.

About the Author
Chic Thompson’s passion is inspiring executives, MBA students and children to be “curious first… critical second” while creative problem solving. He is a Fellow at the University of Virginia’s Darden Business School and adjunct faculty at the Brookings Institution and the Young Presidents’ Organization. Chic’s first book, What a Great Idea!, published by HarperCollins, was a main selection of the Executive Book Club. In 2001, Harvard Business School released a case study on the speaking career of Chic entitled “What a Great Idea!.” His second book, “Yes, But...” is a guide to overcoming the bureaucratic language that stifles continuous innovation. He wrote this book after consulting with GE to help design their continuous improvement process called “Work-Out.” Chic worked in new product development and marketing for: • W.L. Gore and Associates (Gore-Tex®) • Johnson & Johnson • Walt Disney During the last 30 years, Chic has given over 4500 presentations and has teamed up with talent ranging from Tony Robbins and Stephen Covey to Cirque du Soleil and Second City Improv.
