Technical know-how and hands-on examples: 0-60 with WebSockets

Full disclosure: I had the opportunity to review the early version of the book, and also wrote the foreword for the book. And the good news is, I gave it a glowing review based on the early drafts, and it has only gotten better since! The book strikes a perfect balance between technical know-how, and hands-on examples and implementation.

If you're not familiar with WebSockets, then think of it as an upgraded TCP connection, but with clean browser API and a set of convenient abstractions such as built-in message framing, protocol negotiation, bi-directional communication, multiplexing, and more. Broadly speaking there are two parts to WebSocket: the browser API specified by W3C, and the wire protocol defined by IETF (RFC 6455). The book begins with a good overview of each component - if you don't much care for the wire protocol, you can skip right over. Alternatively, if you're a protocol geek (like myself), then you have a great launching point for further research - the book covers just enough to answer all the common questions.

Following the technical introduction, the book dissects three hands-on examples: an XMPP chat implementation layered over WebSockets, a STOMP messaging client, and finally a full blown VNC implementation over WebSockets, which includes hands-on demos and code examples of how to work with binary data, protocols, and all other important WebSocket features. Finally, the book concludes with a good discussion on deployment and security best practices - an area all too often overlooked. Long story short, this book should take you from 0 to 60 with WebSockets, and you'll have fun doing it.

Great introduction to WebSocket

The book is well written and examples are very helpful and complement the book well. The VM Appliance downloadable from the book website is simply brilliant. Everything you need to learn WebSocket (nodejs,Chrome, wireshark, etc) are all pre-installed in this Ubuntu VM. You just load it using VirtualBox and your learning lab is ready to go. Nothing to set up. This alone worth 10X the price of the book. Great works by these authors. Thank you!

Very concise complete coverage of the topic. I found the example Web Socket server implementation in Node.js especially helpful. Easy to read and understand, very well written.

The Rest of the Story

It's been over a decade since James Wilson's book, Adrenal Fatigue: The 21st Century Stress Syndrome, came out.Adrenal Fatigue: The 21st Century Stress Syndrome That book seem to form the current basis of knowledge for doctors who address adrenal issues (holistic, functional, and alternative practioners). Western-trained Endocrinologists don't address, or even accept the notion that adrenal glands can be stressed and underperforming. It has to be Addison's Disease (non-functioning glands) before they will see you. But Wilson only told part of the story - mild and moderate adrenal fatigue. Only Lam addresses severe fatigue and pre-Addison's adrenal exhaustion. If Dr. Lam were not so generous with his writings on his website, I would still be too sick to get out of bed and at my wit's end as well!

As a fibromyalgia patient of 6 years, i seemed to finally have my hypothyroid and pain under control, but my doctor couldn't say why my energy was steadily decreasing. Not recognizing adrenal fatigue sooner and then being diagnosed and "mistreated" with adrenal supplements and steroids which backfired, I landed into the worst stage of adrenal stress, just short of failure. Dr. Lam's writings online and in his book Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome - Reclaim Your Energy and Vitality with Clinically Proven Natural Programs (With Online Recovery Module and Other Bonuses) (Dr. Lam's Adrenal Recovery Series)sounded like he was describing my personal case history when all other writings said supplements or gland extracts would be cure me. No one else even mentioned the possibility for the paradoxical reactions I had, while he wrote that they would be expected in my circumstances! He shared so much information at his website, I wasn't sure how much more his book could contain. But it does contain much more and it has been my constant companion since it arrived a month ago. I have dog-eared pages, underlined and highlighted passages in every chapter. The material is coherent and so thorough. I have put his suggestions to use and am now making progress. This book is the rest of the story about AFS, expanding Wilson's work, going broader, further and in an enormously helpful,digestable manner. Dr. Lam's book is a must read for every alternative practioner, internist, endocrinologist, and every patient suffering from extreme exhaustion!

Mixed feelings: Fear based but Informative

I read the book, and ended up going through an interview process with Dr. Lam himself. Here is my take:

I didn't find any other book that explained what I was experiencing so spot on. I think Dr. Lam truly understands the deep levels and complexity of Adrenal Fatigue. HOWEVER, I think there is another business agenda going on here. His book also has a pervasive theme of "You won't get better without my help" when he states over and over: "it is needed to find a good practitioner experienced in natural healing in your area to guide you through this step"...it both validated me and increased my anxiety to read the book because I felt like unless I paid the enormous fee per phone call to get his help I wouldn't get better.

The first conversation with his staff was about how much I could afford per day in supplements. Money focused healthcare is always a red flag. There were other red flags that I won't go into here.

He probably truly can help people heal, but at what cost? Unless you are super rich and/or completely desperate, the high cost will add to your stress. So I left with mixed feelings.

Natural, gentle approach for adrenal fatigue sufferers!!

I knew that I was suffering from some sort of fatigue, but was at a loss on how to address this debilitating syndrome without the use of pharmaceutical drugs or other harmful methods for my already stressed out body. Dr Lam in great detail explains all the syndromes that I have been experiencing, but he also gives hope in explaining how our bodies can recover - which is after all why I am reading this book! The natural approach using diet, exercise and natural supplements really appeals to me. But do not be fooled - it isn't your run of the mill kind of approach. Dr Lam is systematic and is constantly teaching us to be more attuned to our bodies, something that you don't hear often.

The book is written in a very user friendly format, and in easy to understand language. For those who think they may be suffering from adrenal fatigue but are not sure, this book will help clarify things for you, as it did for me! What a relief it was to read that I had legitimate reasons for waking up extremely tired, needed to nap almost everyday and was wide awake after midnight - that it wasn't because I was lazy. For years I lived with the guilt that I just wasn't as hardworking as my peers and that I just needed to 'buckle up'.

Now with this guide book in hand, I can better understand what my body is trying to tell me and how to help it heal. I am so excited that this book is available for the general public at such a reasonable price, and really hope that it will bring much hope to the many men and women out there suffering silently for so long.

Katherine A. Bussard is Peter C. Bunnell Curator of Photography at the Princeton University Art Museum. Previously, she served as associate curator of photography at the Art Institute Chicago. Her major exhibitions include: Film and Photo in New York (2012); So the Story Goes: Photographs by Tina Barney, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Nan Goldin, Sally Mann, and Larry Sultan (2006); and a biennial series dedicated to emerging photographers (2005–2011). She is the author of Unfamiliar Streets: The Photographs of Richard Avedon, Charles Moore, Martha Rosler, and Philip-Lorca diCorcia (2014).

Lisa Hostetler is curator of photography at George Eastman Museum, Rochester, New York. Previously she worked as curator at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., and the Milwaukee Art Museum, where she curated exhibitions including Taryn Simon: Photographs and Texts, In Living Color: Photographs by Saul Leiter, and Color Rush: 75 Years of Color Photography in America―for which she worked as an editor on an accompanying title published by Aperture in 2013.

'Color rush' is one of those books that was co-published with a museum coinciding with an exhibition. The show at the Milwaukee Art Museum ended in May but this lovely book will most likely be the standard history of American color photography. It follows the same format as Kevin Moore's 'Starburst' book (another exhibition title from 2010 at the Cincinnati Art Museum) with essays in the front of the book followed a portfolio of work from relevant photographers.

I thought the two essays in 'Color rush' were first class. Katherine Bussard covers the history and Lisa Hostetler looks at the nature of color work. Both writers cover it all: early color; Hollywood; newspapers; Kodak; advertising; magazines (National Geographic, Life and Vogue) and many individual photographers. The acceptance of color as art took some time as Hostetler says on page twenty-one: 'Thus in the documentary era -- the 1930s and early '40s -- monochrome photograph's association was with reality and truth, while color photography was usually associated with superfluous fantasy and commercial extravagance'. Bussard makes an interesting point about the 1976 MoMA Eggleston exhibition that is generally assumed to kick-start the creative interest in color because in the same year Ernst Haas, Jay Maisel and Pete Turner started the Space Gallery, and the George Eastman House, Corcoran Gallery, Images Gallery, Zabriskie Gallery all had serious exhibitions of color work. She says of the MoMA exhibition: 'It should instead be understood as one of many separate instances in which artistic practice embraced the hybridity that had long characterized color photography'.

One of the strengths of the book is the excellent portfolio section, mostly showing the work of individuals but nicely there are photo sections looking at the remarkable advertising work of Nickolas Muray (including two stunning photos of models sitting around a swimming pool from 1931) and Victor Keppler, magazine photography by Anton Bruehl, Victor Keppler, Louise Dahl-Wolfe. Kodak gets six pages, FSA six and Life magazine eight. Thirty-four photographers are included in the rest of the book each having a short biographic essay to go with their work (mostly two to five shots). The back pages have a useful twelve page photography timeline, glossary, exhibition checklist and index.

Aperture have done a lovely job with the book's production using a silky matt art paper for the 250 screen printing. Someone had a bright idea of putting all the many footnotes on the same page to avoid the tedious (and annoying) turning to back pages to check out a reference.

'Color rush' delivers with two excellent essays and two hundred beautifully printed photos.

Great Book & Great Exhibit

I've gone to this show at the Milwaukee Art Museum twice. I've also gone through the book a few times and it's a great supplement to the exhibit. The photographs are fascinating. The history and insight by Lisa Hostetler is an interesting read. Highly recommend this book. Especially if you can't see the exhibit.

WHAT A WONDERFUL BOOK!

Outstanding and extraordinary book. A book to be loved. It covers american color photography from 1907 to 1981 in a way it coudnt be done better. Two short essays and more than 60 photographers, magazines and catalogs, each a milestone. Each author or item' photographs are acompannied by no more than forty small lines that explains just what necessary. Quality of color printing is five stars, as it should be. For example, Egglestone's red ceiling with a bulb and Meyerowitz' porch are a proof of couldnt be better color quality printing. A lot of photographs were breathtaking for me and a I must confess my ignorance though I have a lot of photo book; I didnt know about a third of the photographers compiled in this beautiful book. These women made a titanic work demostrating a vast knowledge. In fact, it surprised very gladly to me that the book's authors and the other three persons involved in the making of it are all women. Not one man in it. A proof that photography, at least, is no longer an exclusive male domain. Thanks God almighty! If you can, dont miss this book which is bounded for making history. It filled my heart and blowed my senses. I feel in gratitude with the people who made this book, and listening to Louis Armstrong most popular song, it just remains to me to say: "What a wonderful book!".
